The Castro, San Francisco, CA
The Castro is San Francisco's most popular gaybourhood! A vibrant and lovely residential district - and the largest gay neighbourhood in the US today, The Castro has an rich LGBT history that goes a long way back.
The most famous resident of The Castro was Harvey Milk, an openly gay politician who advocated gay rights until his tragic assassination in 1978.
Today, you will find many gay-friendly and gay-oriented businesses catering to residents and visitors, including gay restaurants, gay cafes, gay adult toys stores (aplenty). For visitors, there are many prominent heritage buildings such as the Castro Theatre, Twin Peaks, and the San Francisco Human Rights Campaign Center and Store (which is located at the former home of Harvey Milk).
The Castro district, as not-your-conventional-neighbourhood, makes a very pleasant and interesting stroll and it is easily accessible via a scenic ride on the F Market streetcar line from Fisherman's Wharf, Embarcadero and Market Street. It is also easily accessible via the MUNI Metro.

The Castro Theatre
How San Francisco's iconic Castro Theatre survived since 1922. This video was made all the more poignant in December 2011, when the owners abandoned movies and fired staff to make more money as a purely live acts venue.

It was another glorious and beautiful day in the SF Bay Area. The Castro Street Fair is the last of the great summer street fairs in San Francisco. This year the fair seemed smaller to us. Usually there is a main stage on the Market Street end of Castro but that was missing this year. The dj playing music in the designated dance area was discouraging dancing with poor choices of music. Usually the parking lot off Castro, between Market & 18th is used for the country-western dancing but this year it was fenced off. Crowds were more sparse than usual. Still, with all of that said, we still had a great time.

The Castro Theatre: More than a Movie Palace
There is nothing like viewing a film in a theater, and few can top San Francisco’s iconic Castro Theatre. From its storied history to its immaculate design and architecture, it is no surprise that renowned filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson, Martin Scorsese, and Gus Van Sant have chosen to host premieres there. Beyond its role as a venue, though, the Castro is well-known as a treasured landmark and locus for the LGBTQ+ community. Sitting among its over 1,400 seats, one can feel the building’s past and its lasting cultural power, and few experiences can compare. So, next time you head to the multiplex or sit down to watch a movie on your phone, take a minute to appreciate that places like the Castro remain, as cultural institutions, and as cathedrals for the theater-going experience.
