ZAIRE: KINSHASA: GENERAL BUMBA MOASO DJOGE'S FUNERAL
Natural Sound
The funeral of the former head of the Zairian Army, General Bumba Moaso Djoge took place on Sunday at Notre Dame Cathedral in Kinshasa.
69 year old General Bumba died on the 28th April after a long illness and his funeral was attended by a large number of the current military elite.
The service for General Bumba Moaso Djoge - the head of Zaire's armed forces for many years - was attended by the elite of the Mobutu regime.
The Vice Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Mahele Yekolieko and the head of the presidential guard, General Nzimbi Kongo Abasa were among the mourners.
Bumba fought in the Kolwezi battle against rebel forces from Angola in 1978 and was widely believed responsible for the assassination of nationalist rebel leader Pierre Lulele in 1963.
Lulele's son, Guillaume, is currently leading the rebel forces in Lower Zaire, waiting to join Kabila's troops advancing from the east.

Archbishop of Kinshasa delivers Christmas homily
(25 Dec 2018) An appeal for peace during Congo's tense, volatile election period was issued at a Christmas Eve midnight mass in Kinshasa.
The newly appointed Archbishop Fridolin Ambongo called on President Joseph Kabila's government to hold the elections on Dec. 30, as announced last week.
Cheers greeted his homily at the Notre Dame Cathedral of Kinshasa.
The real peace excludes egoism, regionalism, tribalism, division and categorization that pushed us apart, said Ambongo. In this critical period in the history of our country, I invite each of you to have a sense of responsibility, and to embrace nonviolence, so we may make it through December 30th 2018 that elections happen in peace and truth.
Congo's Catholic church has a been a longtime supporter of democracy in the country and has urged Kabila to hold elections, which have been postponed for two years.
The church has been a key player in negotiations after Kabila refused to step down at the end of his mandate in 2016.
Real peace, today in our country, the peace that comes from Jesus Christ, that peace requires that the elections are held on schedule, on the 30th of December 2018, said Ambongo.
Real peace ... is a peace that also calls for the results when they are announced to reflect the real will of the people, he said.

An invitation to pray for reconciliation in Congo
Due to persistent violence in his country, François-Xavier Maroy Rusengo, Archbishop of Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, has left the Synod of Bishops. With burned parishes and attacked and kidnapped priests, the Church spares no efforts, nor does she conceal the difficulties she must face in getting her message across to these “enemies of peace”, as Archbishop Maroy defined them. Before his departure, the Archbishop confessed to H2onews that under these circumstances reconciliation is not at all easy. Yet, the Church continues to fight for peace:“We are among the main agents that appeal to the international community so that it may firmly commit itself to the pacification of the region.”“We organize reconciliation encounters through the intense work of the Commission for Justice and Peace, which tries to solve all of the Church’s internal problems and even those of people who are not members of the Church. We believe that the greatest thing that can be done is to pray. If a priest, if a Christian, does not pray, his efforts are useless.”Despite the dramatic conditions of the diocese of Bukavu, located on the Rwandan border, Christians express their hope by praying for the Synod and its efforts for reconciliation.“A simple example: right now, our diocese is praying for communion with the Synod which is underway here in Rome. Every day, one parish, along with all its members, has been organized to keep vigil and to pray for communion with this Synod.”Before returning to his country with a peace message for Kivu from the Synod Fathers, the Archbishop made one last request:“I would really ask the Universal Church to turn her eyes towards the territories that today continue to suffer, and I ask that our diocese in particular be in everyone’s prayers.”
