1. Lola ya Bonobo Kinshasa
Founded by Claudine Andre in 1994, Lola ya Bonobo is the world's only sanctuary for orphaned bonobos. Since 2002, the sanctuary has been located just south of the suburb of Kimwenza at the Petites Chutes de la Lukaya, Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lola ya Bonobo means 'paradise for bonobos' in Lingala, the main language of Kinshasa. In 2012, Lola ya Bonobo was home to 60 bonobos who live in 30 hectares of primary forest. Lola ya Bonobo is a member of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance. Typically, bonobos arrive as young infants. The bushmeat trade in Congo sees hundreds of bonobos killed each year for meat and the infants are sold as pets. When confiscated, these infant bonobos are taken to Lola ya Bonobo. The group consists of workers recruited by Dutch artist Renzo Martens from a plantation owned by the consumer goods corporation Unilever. Martens was heretofore known for his provocations, including a documentary a decade earlier that suggested that the Congolese people capitalize their poverty as a natural resource. The CATPC artists—Djonga Bismar, Mathieu Kilapi Kasiama, Cedrick Tamasala, Mbuku Kimpala, Mananga Kibuila, Jérémie Mabiala, Emery Mohamba, and Thomas Leba—work with an ecologist and artists based in Kinshasa. 2 Weeks in Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC

I spent two weeks in July on a trip to Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Rwanda on a small group Africa tour with Rock My Adventure.

In Rwanda we spent a couple of days exploring Kigali.

In the DRC we climbed Mount Nyiragongo volcano, home to the world's largest lava lake. The Mt Nyiragongo hike was tough, but so worth it for the views! Read about it here:

In Uganda we went gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which I've written more about here:

We then went on safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park, before heading to Hairy Lemon Island on the Nile River. We finished the trip in Bujagali, staying at Nile River Explorers, where some of us went white water rafting and SUP on the Nile.

Deadliest Journeys - Congo River

We make the epic journey from Kinshasha, capital of the DRC, to Kisangani, the third largest city in this vast country. The only way to move between the cities is by boat or plane. We join 1,500 people onboard the 'Gbemani', sailing along the Congo River. Without fresh water, electricity, or medicines, it is a perilous voyage.
