Toulouse Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located in the city of Toulouse, France. The cathedral is a national monument, and is the seat of the Archbishop of Toulouse. The exact date of the original building is unknown; the first mention of a church edifice on that site is found in a charter of 844. In 1073 the bishop of Toulouse commenced work on a more elaborate structure, followed by additional construction in the 13th century. It has been listed since 1862 as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.
The irregular west front exists because the cathedral consists of two incomplete churches, the first dating from the early 13th century, which includes the rose window from 1230; and the other begun in about 1272, on a new plan and a different axis, which was later abandoned, although by 1445 a triforium had been added to the choir and a Flamboyant west portal had been inserted. It is off-center because the architect took care to save the baptismal chapel north of the entrance. An oblong tower, composed of a Gothic portion on Romanesque foundations, and capped by a 16th-century gable belfry, completed the west façade. Also in the 15th century the nave and choir vaults were unsymmetrically connected, while in 1609, after a fire, the choir vault was rebuilt. It was not until the 1920s that its north wall was cleared of abutting buildings and a doorway added, similar in style to the west entrance.
The interior is as disconcerting as the exterior because the two sections are not on the same axis and juxtapose two styles of Gothic architecture. A massive round pillar, built at the beginning of the 16th century in an attempt to begin the transept, now stands incongruously between the two parts, lining up with the center of the nave in the west, and with the south pillars of the choir in the east. The vast proportions of the five-bay choir, with ambulatory and radiating chapels, dwarf the older nave. Of the 15 chapels, the oldest date from 1279–86, but the majority were completed during the 14th century. Most of the stained glass is 19th-century, but there is glass from almost every century beginning with the end of the 13th in the Saint Vincent de Paul chapel. This is the oldest stained glass in Toulouse.
The interesting choir stalls whose decoration includes pagan and mythological subjects were carved in walnut in 1610-13 by Pierre Monge of Narbonne. The walnut case of the organ was carved at the same time, rising some 17 meters above the floor. Restored in 1868 by Cavaillé-Coll and in 1976, the organ is often used for concerts. The beautiful, but worn, tapestries (c. 1609) by Jean du Mazet, and the Baroque retable of the high altar are also of particular note.

Bourdon de la Cathédrale St Etienne de Toulouse
Volée exceptionnelle au pied lors de la visite du clocher de la Cathédrale St Étienne de Toulouse. Il s'agit là de la plus grosse cloche de Toulouse.
On peut noter que le bourdon ne sonne que rarement des deux côtés, en effet, la volée actuelle est électrique, et cette électrification a été la cause de la suppression de la seconde planche à pousser au pied. Cette cloche de 4 tonnes avait donc besoin de 4 sonneurs, et il est relativement difficile de procéder à une volée franche avec moitié moins de sonneurs.

En bref : Plenum des cinq cloches de volée qu'abrite le clocher de la cathédrale St Etienne.
Cloche 1 - La2 : Etienne Florian fondu par Lévêque Amans (gendre Louison) en 1876, poids 3901 kg, volée lancé-franc.
Cloche 2 - Ré3 : Marie, fondue par Paccard en 1992, poids 1235 kg, volée en rétro-équilibré.
Cloche 3 - Sol3 : Flos Carmeli, fondue par Jolly à Limoges en 1764, poids (environ) 790 kg, volée en rétro-équilibré.
Cloche 4 - Sol#3 : fondue par Viguier en 1815, poids (environ) 500 kg, volée en rétro-équilibré.
Cloche 5 - La3 : Cécile, fondue par Paccard en 1992, poids 380 kg, volée en rétro-équilibré.
La cathédrale est par ailleurs équipée de 16 autres cloches dont 12 formant, avec les cloches de volée, un carillon assez médiocre, autrefois manuel, d'une octave et demie environ (avec quelques altérations) allant jusqu'au Ré#5.
On trouve également trois autres cloches au niveau de la toiture du clocher, servant à sonner les heures et les demies, un mi4 (de 1647) et un Sol4 fixé sur des armatures en fer forgé de part et d'autre de la tour, et au centre, un Fa3 au profil étrange et aux harmoniques discutables fondu en 1581 par Nicolas Poncet à Toulouse et pesant apparemment 1800kg. Les deux petites cloches sonnent les demies et le Fa3 les heures.
Une dernière cloche se trouve dans un petit clocheton dépassant de la toiture même de la cathédrale au centre de la nef, à la hauteur du transept, il s'agit de la cloche du chapitre, donnant un La4 fondu en 1813, vraisemblablement par Viguier.
Le bourdon actuel (Etienne Florian), aurait été fondu avec le métal de son prédécesseur, l'Augustine, et a vu son poids augmenté.
La cathédrale possédait il y longtemps la sois-disante plus grosse cloche de toute l'Eglise Chrétienne, la Cardailhac, dont la légende urbaine prétends qu'elle pesait 25 tonnes, le poids serait en fait compris entre 12 et 14 tonnes. Cette cloche fut fondue en 1387, refondue en 1531, puis détruite le 21 Juillet 1794 où elle fut jetée du haut du clocher, elle se brisa et le bronze fut utilisé pour faire des canons.
