A look at the trial around the lake at Centennial Park, Ellicott City, MD. For a pretty ride around a lake, it's hillier than you'd expect. If you don't go on a day with a walk-a-thin like us, it'd be a more enjoyable ride. It is only 3.4 miles but the hills will give you a work out. Especially if you half way around, take the two mile (one each way) path up to the tennis courts and back.

Howard County Recreation & Parks Opens Renovated Tennis Courts at Centennial Park
ELLICOTT CITY, MD -- Newly renovated tennis courts are now open at Centennial Park in the West Area. Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks was joined today by Howard County Council Vice-Chair Courtney Watson and members of the 50 Plus Tennis Group to mark the first matches on the courts replaced this Spring because of drainage and maintenance concerns.
Howard County is known for its quality recreation facilities and these courts needed an update and a fix for the water problems here, said County Executive Ken Ulman. I am glad that this project was able to be accomplished so quickly, making the improved courts available again for the summer season.
Watson said, Our parks are an integral part of our community for our residents and a reflection of this county for our visitors. We had addressed the issue before but it was no longer enough. We know these new courts will perform well for a long time.
Begun in March, the $295,000 project consisted of removing the existing five courts, revising the sub layers under the courts for improved drainage and stormwater management, and installing new asphalt and finish layers for enhanced performance. A previous solution to the ongoing drainage problems had outlived its expected life and was no longer adequate. Additional landscaping will be completed in the Fall to replace trees that were affecting the maintenance of the courts.
I am always very proud that we are able to maintain such high standards at our park facilities in Howard County, said John Byrd, Director of the Department of Recreation & Parks. When we looked in detail into what was under these courts, we knew we had to start from scratch to completely resolve the long-standing water problems and use the best stormwater management solutions. We are confident these courts will function better and be more available because they will drain properly.

This 77-acre park features three baseball fields; an open-play area; a large playground for all abilities; two tennis courts; two basketball courts; two picnic pavilions; and approximately 2.5 miles of sidewalks and pathways, plus a 2.5-mile loop circling the park, parking, landscape, and restroom facilities.
All of our parks are inhabited by a wide variety of wildlife such as deer, snakes, fish, rabbits, insects and birds. Please do not disturb them; remember, this is their home.
