Lisbon's Muslim community marks Eid
LEADIN:
Muslims have packed out a square in Lisbon to take part in prayers marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
They've also been gathering at the city's central mosque, as the Eid al-Fitr festival got underway.
STORYLINE:
Lisbon's Praca Martim Moniz square has transformed into a place of a worship.
Hundreds of Muslims have come here to take part in Eid al-Fitr prayers marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.
Portugal is home to approximately 50-thousand Muslims - with Lisbon at the heart of the community.
The majority come from former Portuguese colonies such as Mozambique and Guinea Bissau.
But there are also many recent migrants from India, Bangladesh, Morocco as well as students from conflict-hit countries such as Syria and Libya.
Eid is traditionally a time for families to come together in celebration.
For those gathered here, today is a time to think about their loved ones back home.
This time I very, very miss my family, because (it has been a) very long year we are living alone. My father, mother (are in) Bangladesh. So here, at this time, I very, very miss my family, says Abu Yosof, a business owner from Bangladesh.
Imtiaz Ahmed, Bangladesh Ambassador to Portugal, adds: It is hard, but yes, my family also. They are now in Bangladesh so whenever I will return home, I will telephone them. I'll share my enjoy(ment) through (the) telephone. But of course, if we are together, that enjoyment is different.
At Lisbon's Central mosque, prayers are being dedicated to those facing conflict and violence - such as those in Gaza and Syria.
Libyan student Mohammed Ben Khalil has been living in Lisbon for less than a year.
We've been here for three months and we have nine months left - and I'm here for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. We are far from Libya, but Lisbon is a beautiful town and they respect Islam here and God bless them.
Abdool Vakil, President of the Islamic Community of Lisbon says Libyan and Syrian students reflect a lot on their families back home.
They feel their parents and brothers are suffering and they, despite everything, are happy here. It is horrible for them to know that, but here they do feel at home, he says.
He continues: Of course we are celebrating and we must, but we cannot forget about the ones who are suffering.

Portugal's Islamic/Moorish Influence
In this documentary, we uncover the influence that 500 years of Muslim occupation had on Portugal and Portuguese culture. We visit some important sights and hear from Portuguese people regarding their views on this significant part of their history. Despite being overlooked at times, the Islamic occupation, known as its Moorish past, has had a huge impact on Portugal.
While in Spain, the seven centuries of Muslim rule is very well-known, in Portugal it typically goes unnoticed. Despite being overlooked at times, the Islamic occupation, known as its Moorish past, has had a huge impact on Portugal.
The Muslims invaded present-day Portugal in the year 711 and established their capital in what is modern day Silves. A significant part of this documentary takes us to Silves, which is still one of the best places in Portugal to see the influence of the Muslim period. Silves was the main access route to the inland areas of the Algarve, and the Silves castle, which was built by the Almoravid Arabs in the 11th century, is the best preserved and most significant castle in the region. One of Portugal's main tourist attractions are its the beautiful beaches in the Algarve region. The name Algarve itself is derived from the Arabic word al-Gharb, meaning the West. Portugal was the most Western part of the Muslim Empire and it was officially referred to as al-Gharb al-Andalus, meaning West of Al-Andalus. Nowadays Al-Andalus is often referred to as Muslim Spain, or Islamic Iberia.
It is not just the physical monuments which make Portugal’s Muslim past evident, but you can also find it in the country’s language and culture, even though the entire Reconquest centred around getting rid of Islamic influence altogether. Some Arabic words have permanently entered the Portuguese language, words for sugar, rice, olive oil, lettuce, village, the West and many others. Even Portugal’s most popular holiday spot, Albufeira, gets its name from Arabic, having then been called (Albuhayra) which means the lake in Arabic. The journey also takes us to Sintra, among other places, where the massive Moorish Castle stands. It was built by Muslims between the 9th and 10th centuries, the castle was vital in order to protect its population.
The southernmost region of Portugal, was finally conquered by Christians and taken away from the Muslims in 1249, and in 1255 the capital shifted to Lisbon. Neighbouring Spain would not complete its Reconquista until 1492.

Lisbon’s first Syrian restaurant
Mezze opened its doors to the Portuguese public in September 2017, and in just over 7 months, it has become one of Lisbon’s most popular restaurants, offering Syrian cuisine cooked by refugees. The concept behind Mezze was to match newcomer’s skills with long-term employment, whilst providing workshops and discussion groups with the Portuguese public. It’s been so successful that to keep up with demand, Mezze will launch a catering service and next year, a new Mezze will open in Portugal second biggest city, Porto. For both the founders and staff, Mezze’s success proves that integration can be a positive exchange, providing benefits to both communities
