Death Valley National Park - Wildrose Charcoal Kilns - Park Travel Review
Wildrose Charcoal Kilns in Death Valley National Park are the best preserved in the West. Walking around and inside them was really cool! This was a great side trip in Death Valley!
charcoal kilns, near Death Valley CA
In 1877 George Hearsts Modock Consolidated Mining Company completed construction of the charcoal kilns in Wildrose Canyon. The charcoal produced by the kilns was to be used as fuel for two silver-lead smelters that Hearst had built in the Argus Range 25 miles to the west. The kilns operated until the summer of 1878 when the Argus mines, due to deteriorating ore quality, closed and the furnaces shut down.

Wildrose Charcoal Kilns, Death Valley National Park
In late October 2019 we visited the Wildrose Charcoal Kilns located on the West side of Death Valley National Park.
Built in 1877, these 10 beehive shaped kilns were used to make charcoal for the remote mines to burn in their smelters.

Inside Wild Rose Charcoal Kilns - Death Valley, California
Have you ever been inside a Charcoal Kiln? If not, this is your opportunity! Explore around and inside the Wild Rose Charcoal Kilns in the Panamint Range high above Death Valley, California. The Charcoal Kilns were built in 1867 and were used to reduce Pinyon and Juniper tree wood to charcoal in a process of slow burning in low oxygen. This fuel was then transported to mines in Death Valley to feed smelting and ore extraction operations. The kilns were abandoned three years after they were built, in 1870. They were restored by Navajo Indian stonemasons from Arizona in 1971. The stones sticking out from the top of the kilns were used to anchor climbing ropes used in the restoration process. This sequence was shot with a Canon HFS-100 and edited in Adobe Premier CS5.

Snow at the Charcoal Kilns in Death Valley
Checking out the Charcoal Kilns in Death Valley. This is the first time I've ever ridden a motorcycle in snow so I walked it around so I could get going down the road and bump start the bike. I couldn't kick start it due to being at 6000'+ and I'm tuned for sea level. I left a bunch of junk in the beginning of the video so you can see more of the Clay Kilns.

Awesome cabin. First come, first served. Free accommodations. It's better than an AirBnB if you can claim it. We were there Tuesday thru Thursday in May 2019.
