In the third instalment of Alternative Bordeaux, Jamie Goode visits Chateau Lafon Rochet in Bordeaux to speak with proprietor Basile Tesseron about their experience with organic farming.

Le château Lafon-Rochet est déjà inscrit comme domaine viticole dès le XVIème siècle et restera plus de deux siècles dans la famille des Lafon qui lui permettront d'être même reconnu comme quatrième cru classé dans le classement impérial de 1855.
Situé sur l'appellation Saint-Estèphe et voisin des châteaux Lafite Rothschild (Pauillac) et de Cos d'Estournel (Saint-Estèphe), ce cru classé deviendra plus tard propriété de la famille charentaise Tesseron - bien connue pour ses cognacs Tesseron - lors du rachat de ce cru par le grand-père de Basile Tesseron, Guy, dans les années 60. C'est à la suite d'un incendie que la propriété actuelle - une chartreuse moderne - construira l'image forte et reconnaissable dans le paysage viticole médocain. En effet, c'est Michel Tesseron (fils), acteur viticole charismatique dans le monde viticole bordelais, qui prendra l'initiative de peindre la chartreuse en jaune.
Lafon-Rochet est idéalement situé et jouit d'un terroir typiquement médocain composé de graves du quaternaire recouvrant des argilo-calcaire: matrice indispensable pour produire des vins d'une grande élégance et fraîcheur indispensable à la digestibilité propre aux grands Bordeaux.
Aujourd'hui, Basile Tesseron, fils de Michel, gère avec passion et exigence ce cru qui n'en finira pas de nous surprendre par ses vins alliant puissance et douceur selon les termes de l'intéressé.

Juicy Dark Plum, Freshness, Crème de Cassis
Red wine with a very dense core here, youthful appearance, blue-purple centre, ruby towards the rim. Fine nose here, quite elegant, rather classic style with a hint of roasted oak. Dark fruity character, classic hints of cassis, dark plum, some floral notes. Very dense palate, still very youthful. I like the grip because the fruit is really juicy, almost like a crème de cassis; juicy dark plum, good freshness in terms of acidity. Still with youthful tannins, not hard but present, still young and lively; but a fine wine, I like this in terms of texture and harmony. It has a good length too, a good purity of fruit. All it needs is some more time. I suppose this is a wine that should be ready to drink in 2-3 years, and then obviously it has the density and concentration to evolve for quite a long time.

Juicy Plum, Red Berry, Touch of Vanilla
A youthful quite dark colour here, deep ruby-red. Still youthful on the nose, displaying some hints of wood. Fruit still feels quite young, with hints of almost freshly crushed berries like red currant, cassis and plum. Palate however is nicely rounded already; I like this texture here, combining quite finely grainy tannins with that juicy plum, red berry character. Well-preserved freshness. There’s a hint of underlying oak here, adding just a gentle touch of vanilla. Good length here, quite persistent, with a nice juicy finish, with a good emphasis on fruit; and I think the tannins are already well-settled, good purity of fruit. Classic style, elegant; very enjoyable today, but doubtlessly with a long potential for aging.Château Lafon Rochet:

Chateau Lafon-Rochet was already registered as a wine-growing estate in the 16th C and would remain in the Lafon family for over two centuries which would even enable it to be recognized as the Quatrième Cru Classé (fourth-ranked French vineyard) in the imperial classification of 1855.
Located on the Saint-Estephe appellation and a neighbour of the Lafite Rothschild (Pauillac) and Cos d’Estournel (Saint-Estephe) chateaus, this Cru Classé (classified superior quality wine estate) would later become the property of the Tesseron family from the Charente, a family which is well known for its Tesseron cognacs, when the vineyard was taken over by Basile Tesseron’s grand-father Guy, in the 1960’s. After destruction by fire the current property, a modern Chartreuse house, would become a strong distinctive image in the Medoc wine countryside. In fact, it was Michel Tesseron (son), a charismatic viticulturist in the Bordeaux viticulture circle, who would take the initiative of painting the Chartreuse in yellow.
Lafon-Rochet is ideally located and luxuriates in a typical Medoc earth comprised of Quaternary gravel strands covered by clay-limestone: an essential matrix for producing wines of great elegance and freshness, vital to the digestibility typical of vintage Bordeaux wines.
Currently, Basile Tesseron, Michel’s son, passionately and rigorously manages the vineyard that is never short of surprises with its wines that “combine power and softness” depending on the taster’s palate.

1995 Chateau Lafon-Rochet
Ever tasted a wine that put your palate under arrest? This wine does that with a demeanor that pleads guilty as charged, presenting a case with undeniable tannin & unrelenting acid. The '95 Chateau Lafon-Rochet is a benchmark example of the what is possible in Saint Estephe.
Château Lagrange en 3D – Grand Cru Classé en 1855 – Saint-Julien (Fr)
Totalement situé sur l’appellation Saint-Julien, le vignoble, d’un seul tenant, s’étend sur deux croupes de graves d’origine « Gunziennes » orientées Nord-Sud. Tantôt fines tantôt plus grossières, ces graves sont accompagnées soit de sable soit d’argile ferrugineuse. Avec une altitude de 24 mètres, le centre du domaine est le point culminant de Saint-Julien. Sur une surface totale de la propriété de 157 hectares, 118 hectares sont plantés en vigne et la majorité des parcelles est drainée.

It’s not often you get such a great aerial view of the Bordeaux vineyards and this neat video from Lafon-Rochet helps to show that the region is by no means flat! It explains a lot when you see a cross-sectional view of some of the region’s top properties.
Château Beychevelle, GCC en 1855, Saint-Julien (FR)
Présentation en 3D du vignoble de Château Beychevelle à Saint-Julien dans le Médoc. Son vin, selon moi, s'affiche clairement comme un vin du Sud de l'appellation (au même titre que Branaire-Ducru, Ducru-Beaucaillou) à travers son style fin et élégant, contrairement à Léoville Las Cases ou Barton au Nord (davantage en race et en puissance).
Château Beychevelle, c'est 2 plateaux principaux complétés par quelques ilots ; mais également des bois (notamment les peupliers jouant le rôle de pompes à eau aux abords des jalles et des pallus).
Mais ce qui fait la qualité de Beychevelle, c'est avant ses sols et sous-sols : Peyrosols et Brunisols, des terroirs très drainant et à forte capacité à se réchauffer rapidement.
