Chateau Petit Village is located in the Catusseau commune (Pomerol AOC – [controlled designation of origin]) and is recognizable in many respects. Stone and metal, the noble elements that constitute the distinctive style of its architecture, are completely harmonious and non-dissonant with the vineyard and the countryside. The happy alliance of tradition and modernity is immediately visible.
This property of 10.5 adjoining hectares is a real jewel in a setting of grapevines carefully nurtured to extract only the best quality Pomerol. We must admit that Axa Millésimes, owner of this reference vineyard, gave itself the means to achieve its goals. The programme is huge: extensive restructuring of the vineyard, construction of a very modern fermentation cellar and a wine storehouse, the main feature of which, beyond aestheticism, is the capacity for detailed management of each parcel of land which will form the personality of the Petit Village wine. Petit Village has a huge advantage for becoming distinguished: although it is mainly Merlot, the vineyard has the highest proportion of old Cabernet Francs and Cabernet Sauvignon: a rare occurrence on the appellation since many vintage chateaus gave preference to Merlot, with more or less Cabernet Franc. This choice at Petit Village is a question of good sense and the obvious: the clay and gravel soil allows this combination, giving the wine an inimitable character of freshness, power and a lofty tannic structure that is excellent for the palate.
The Petit Village wine releases a mild truffle, violet and mulberry fragrance, while the walls within which it is produced emit the spirit of Axa Millésimes: the soul of a place, the search for the harmony and balance of the land, the desire to always do better without ever taking anything for granted.

Château Petit-Village
As with many of the Pomerol properties in Bordeaux, Château Petit-Village is actually devoid of a grand Château. Laid out in a triangular shape, the estate consists of 11 hectares of vineyards, with a nucleus of small buildings that serve as winery, vineyard and business offices. Interestingly, this is presumed to account for its name, which means small village.
It is unknown who initially planted vines at the estate, but after the French Revolution, it has been under the ownership of several families, including the Dufresne family, the De Seguin family (Clos Fourtet), and was acquired by the négociant Fernand Ginestet in 1919. It remained among the Ginestet properties, along with other properties such as Château Margaux and Château Cos dEstournel, until the difficult 1970s forced the Ginestets to divide their properties. Petit-Village was run by Bruno Prats until 1989 when it was sold to the present owners, the insurance group AXA Millésimes. Christian Seely oversees the AXA portfolio, but Petit-Village was managed by Jean-Michel Cazes and Daniel Llose until Cazes retirement. Currently, the property is managed by Daniel Llose and technical director, Serge Ley.
The property is nestled among some well-known neighbors: Vieux Château Certan, La Conseillante, and Beauregard. The Petit-Village vineyards consist of 75% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc, however, the cepage (blend) varies year to year (for 2007: 78% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc). As with nearly all Right Bank properties, the blend is predominately Merlot.

La pierre et le métal, éléments nobles constituant la griffe reconnaissable de son architecture, s'affichent tout en harmonie sans offenser la vigne et le paysage. Le mariage heureux de la tradition et du moderne est d'emblée annoncé.
Cette propriété de 10,5 hectares d'un seul tenant est un véritable bijou dans un écrin de vignes très soigneusement entretenues pour n'extraire que le meilleur de Pomerol. Il faut dire qu'Axa Millésimes, propriétaire de ce cru de référence, s'est donné les moyens de ses ambitions. Le programme est de taille: restructuration en profondeur du vignoble, construction d'un cuvier et d'un chai très modernes dont la qualité principale, surpassant l'esthétisme, reste de pouvoir gérer dans le détail chaque parcelle dont chacune apportera la personnalité du vin de Petit Village. Petit Village a un atout de taille pour se différencier: bien que majoritairement merlot, la vigne possède la plus forte proportion de vieux cabernets francs et de cabernet sauvignon: un fait rare sur l'appellation quand beaucoup de châteaux du cru ont privilégié le merlot, plus ou moins accompagné de cabernet franc. Ce choix à Petit Village est une question d'évidence et de bon sens: les sols argileux et graveleux autorisent cette combinaison, apportant au vin un caractère inimitable de fraîcheur, de puissance et de trame tannique longiligne excellente pour la garde.
Si le vin de Petit Village dégage un doux parfum de truffe, de violette et de mûre, les murs qui l'ont vu naître dégagent l'esprit d'Axa Millésimes: l'âme d'un lieu, la recherche de l'harmonie et de l'équilibre du terroir, l'envie de toujours faire mieux sans jamais prendre tout pour acquis.
