NATIONAL SOARING MUSEUM
Located at the top of Harris Hill in Elmira, 1700 feet above sea level and directly across from the Harris Hill soaring airfield, is one of only two museums in the country dedicated to motor-less flight.
Long regarded as the Soaring Capital of the World, Elmira started hosting national soaring contests in the 1930's. Popularity of the sport grew and during World War II, Elmira was chosen to develop a glider program to train pilots for the war effort.
Over the years it became clear that a dedicated museum was needed, and in 1969, the Soaring Society of America designated Harris Hill as the site for a National Soaring Museum. The museum now houses the world's largest collection of motor-less aircraft and is recognized as the primary historical institution for motor less flight in the United States.
The National Soaring Museum is an invaluable resource for those who love aviation history and another important stop along New Yorks Path Through history.

You Are There Elmira Jewish Heritage
This script was written to emulate the CBS radio and television series You Are There, which aired in the 1940s and 1950s in the United States. An unknown local author from Elmira, NY composed this piece to tell the story of the Jewish community in Elmira in the style of this nationally renowned radio series. David Siskin, member of Congregation Shomray Hadath, edited the script, narrated, and recorded and edited the audio. Maria Kennedy edited the video using photographs from the collections of the Chemung County Historical Society and Congregation Kol Ami. This video is part of the exhibit At the Jewish Table: Food, Family, and Heritage in Elmira on view at the Chemung County Historical Society from April 16 - September 29, 2018, in collaboration with The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes. The project is funded by the New York State Council on the Arts. For more information, see our website:
Elmira Prison Camp | Path Through History | WSKG
ELMIRA PRISON CAMP | Chemung County
After the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1861, the country erupted into Civil War and Elmira became an integral part of the North’s war effort. At first, railroad lines that crisscrossed the area brought raw recruits to train at Camp Rathbun located within the city.
As the war raged on, Camp Rathbun fell into disuse and in July 1864, a part of its 30 acres was converted into a prison to house the increasing numbers of Confederate prisoners of war. Between the summer of 1864 and the fall of 1865, Elmira Prison Camp housed more than 12,000 southern prisoners. Conditions were atrocious, and about one out of every four prisoners would perish from a variety of causes.
Many of the Confederate dead are buried in nearby Woodlawn National Cemetery. After the war, the camp was closed and dismantled, and while much of the camp has disappeared from the landscape, its importance continues to make it part of New York’s Path Through History.

BENJAMIN PATTERSON INN | Steuben County
Located in Corning, the Benjamin Patterson Inn once gave weary travelers on New York's frontier a comfortable place to rest and relax.
Built in 1796 by Benjamin and Sarah Patterson, the inn sat along the old Williamson Road, now US Route 15, and the Chemung River. These two arteries of travel brought countless visitors to the Patterson's Inn. However, during the 20th century the inn slowly fell into disrepair.
In 1976, the Corning Painted Post Historical Society rescued the former inn and restored it to its former colonial glory, including full period furniture and belongings. Today's travelers can choose to visit the inn's functioning herb garden or one of other four historic buildings located on the museum's grounds.

New York is a popular state to settle down. Living in the Empire State can, however, be rather costly and a difficult goal for some people to reach. Many people think of New York as “the big city”. There are some areas of the state that are much more affordable. Upstate New York is often overlooked by outsiders as being part of New York at all. There are, in fact, many fascinating and beautiful places to live that are quite affordable. On that note, here are 11 of the cheapest places to live in New York.

SUMMARY
=======
Ithaca is a city in the Finger Lakes region of New York. It is the seat of Tompkins County, as well as the largest community in the Ithaca–Tompkins County metropolitan area. This area contains the municipalities of the Town of Ithaca, the village of Cayuga Heights, and other towns and villages in Tompkins County. The city of Ithaca is located on the southern shore of Cayuga Lake, in Central New York, about 45 miles (72 km) south-west of Syracuse. It is named after the Greek island of Ithaca. Additionally, Ithaca is located 247 miles (398 km) southeast of Toronto, and 223 miles (359 km) northwest of New York City.
Ithaca is home to Cornell University, an Ivy League school of over 20,000 students, most of whom study at its local campus. In addition, Ithaca College is a private, nonsectarian, liberal arts college of over 7,000 students, located just south of the city in the Town of Ithaca, adding to the area's college town atmosphere. Nearby is Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3). These three colleges bring tens of thousands of students, who increase Ithaca's seasonal population during the school year. The city's voters are notably more liberal than those in the remainder of Tompkins County or in upstate New York, generally voting for Democratic Party candidates.
As of 2010, the city's population was 30,014. A 2017 census estimate stated the population was 31,006.
Namgyal Monastery in Ithaca is the North American seat of Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama.

SUMMARY
=======
American Civil War Prison Camps were operated by both the Union and the Confederacy to handle the 409,000 soldiers captured during the war from 1861 to 1865. The Record and Pension Office in 1901 counted 211,000 Northerners who were captured. In 1861-63 most were immediately paroled; after the parole exchange system broke down in 1863, about 195,000 went to prison camps. Some tried to escape but few succeeded. By contrast 464,000 Confederates were captured (many in the final days) and 215,000 imprisoned. Over 30,000 Union and nearly 26,000 Confederate prisoners died in captivity. Just over 12% of the captives in Northern prisons died, compared to 15.5% for Southern prisons.
