Historic Maryland: Chesapeake Beach RY Station
The next in our Historic Maryland Series takes us to a turn-of the-(last) century train station of a line build mainly to serve beach goers: the Chesapeake Beach Railway station in the bayside town by the same name.
The line operated from June 1900 till tax day 1935. It ran from Washington DC to this point with numerous stops along the way, but the only mandatory stop was Upper Marlboro MD. The rest were flag stops; trains only stopped when ticketed passengers requested. Folks from Baltimore reached here either by taking PRR (either NEC to DC or the Pope's Creek line to Upper Marlboro) trains then transferring to the CBRY, or by bay steamer to a mile-long pier east of the station.
The railroad was knocked out by-you guessed it-the automobile and improved roads, mainly US 50 and 301. Many MD resorts had railroads that abandoned in the 1930s, the most famous of which being Ocean City.
Most of the line's right-of-way is still intact, oddly enough. Portions were converted to a bike trail, and part of MD 260 sits right on the ROW.
Touring this station is definitely a learning experience, as you'll find out. Yer' bullfrog even learned a few things! And it's fun.
A BIG Thanx to the couple who showed us around-and didn't mind appearing in the video! I regret not having gotten their names.
These are the kinds of videos I really enjoy making, and bringing to my viewers. I love interviewing people, and having them explain the goings on. To me, the human aspect really adds to the experience. I hope my viewers enjoy watching as much as I enjoyed making!

Cross Island Bike Trail - Kent Island, Maryland
This is a taste of the Cross Island bike trail, Kent Island, Maryland. The Kent Island High school is on Rt 8, about a mile north of Rt 50. It's the 1st exit once you cross over the Chesapeake bay bridge.
From the High school you can bike West. There is a 3 mile loop. We biked East, three miles to where there are several restaurants on the water. This is an easy, six mile long ride with lunch in the middle. It's about 45 minutes to the Jetty (Kent Narrows).
Chesapeake Bike Tour
800-272-4141. Explore the Chesapeake Bay region of Maryland by bike. Seafood, warm breezes, eagles and miles of friendly terrain. We begin and end our bike touring season here due tot he friendly climate. Early April, when you are just getting your biking legs, this is the place to be. A tad warmer than the interior of the eastern seaboard and some of the flattest empty roads you will find. We will cruise through Easton, and Oxford Maryland, sampling local seafood, exploring quirky shops and spinning the miles. Keep your eyes peeled for Eagles as we head through the Black Water National Wildlife Refuge.
Wilderness Voyageurs provides full support on this 4 day Inn to Inn biking vacation. We take care of lodging and meals, moving your luggage and rest stops through out your cycling day. Full SAG support is the way to bike.
Check out our biking vacations that visit some of the most scenic corners of the US.
