Italy, Venice - San Giacomo di Rialto Church
Photographer:Samuel Magal (samuel@sites-and-photos.com)
San Giacomo di Rialto is a church in the sestiere of San Polo. The addition of Rialto to the name distinguishes this church from its namesake San Giacomo dell'Orio found in the sestiere of Santa Croce, on the same side of the Grand Canal.
It has a large 15th-century clock above the entrance, a useful item in the Venetian business district but regarded as a standing joke for its inaccuracy. The Gothic portico is one of the few surviving examples in Venice. It has a Latin cross plan with a central dome. Inside, the Veneto-Byzantine capitals on the six columns of ancient Greek marble date from the 11th century.

Venice, Italy - Campo San Giacomo di Rialto HD (2015)
Venice is a city in northeastern Italy sited on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline, between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Venice is renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture, and its artworks. The city in its entirety is listed as a World Heritage Site, along with its lagoon.
Venice is the capital of the Veneto region. In 2009, there were 270,098 people residing in Venice's comune (the population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; around 60,000 in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (the Mainland), mostly in the large frazioni (roughly equivalent to parishes or wards in other countries) of Mestre and Marghera; 31,000 live on other islands in the lagoon). Together with Padua and Treviso, the city is included in the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area (PATREVE), with a total population of 2,600,000. PATREVE is only a statistical metropolitan area without any degree of autonomy.
The name is derived from the ancient Veneti people who inhabited the region by the 10th century BC. The city historically was the capital of the Republic of Venice. Venice has been known as the La Dominante, Serenissima, Queen of the Adriatic, City of Water, City of Masks, City of Bridges, The Floating City, and City of Canals. Luigi Barzini described it in The New York Times as undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man. Venice has also been described by the Times Online as being one of Europe's most romantic cities.
The Republic of Venice was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades and the Battle of Lepanto, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially silk, grain, and spice) and art in the 13th century up to the end of the 17th century. This made Venice a wealthy city throughout most of its history. It is also known for its several important artistic movements, especially the Renaissance period. Venice has played an important role in the history of symphonic and operatic music, and it is the birthplace of Antonio Vivaldi.

Modest in exterior, but interesting on the inside, this church, located in the San Polo district, may be one of the oldest churches in Venice. It is also so small that the locals sometimes call it San Giacometto (small Giacomo). If you are a fan of computer games, you may remember the church from the second game of the popular Assassin’s Creed series.
Nobody knows exactly how old San Giacomo di Rialto is. If the legends are to be believed, it may have been built as early as the 5th century AD. The earliest surviving documents tell us that it was already standing by the 12th century AD. Since then, the church has undergone several reconstructions, none of which have changed the original layout or look of it. It has also reportedly survived a devastating fire, which burnt the entire island of Rialto to the ground.
Nowadays, the church hosts a small museum of medieval string instruments inside. When visiting, take note of the giant clock on the church’s tower. Added in 15th century, it never tells the right time.

Places to see in ( Venice - Italy ) Chiesa di San Giacomo dell'Orio
The Chiesa di San Giacomo dall'Orio is a church located in the sestiere of Santa Croce in Venice, northern Italy. The origin of the church's name is unknown. Possibilities include being named after a laurel (lauro) that once stood nearby, a version of dal Rio (of the river), or once standing on an area of dried-up swamp (luprio).
It was founded in the 9th century and rebuilt in 1225. The campanile dates from this period. There have been a number of rebuildings since that time (including a major renovation in 1532) and the ship's keel roof dates from the 14th century.
Two of the columns were brought back from the Fourth Crusade, after the sacking of Constantinople. San Giacomo dall'Orio is a parish church of the Vicariate of San Polo-Santa Croce-Dorsoduro. The other churches in the parish are the churches of San Stae and San Zan Degolà.

Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals – including the Grand Canal thoroughfare – lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s red roofs.
