Putin opens restored fountain symbolic of Stalingrad battle
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Volgograd on Friday to attend a ceremony marking the opening of the newly restored Children's Dance Fountain, a 1939 relic of the Battle of Stalingrad.
August 23 marks the large-scale Nazi bombardment 71 years ago of the city then known as Stalingrad. The German Tank Corps 14 under the command of General von Wittersheim broke through Soviet defences and advanced on the Volga river bank. A massive bombardment of the city ordered by the Nazi leadership and launched in the afternoon devastated the city and left it in ruins.
In a speech Putin recounted the exalted victory: Seventy years ago today our troops inflicted a resounding defeat to the Nazi forces at the Kursk Salient. Each of these towns has become a symbol of our victory. But all of them have their own symbols of the war. In the pre-war Stalingrad, these were the fountain and the sculpture of dancing children. It stood for life, for joy, for a happy childhood.
The statue of six children dancing around a crocodile was modelled on a famous Soviet photograph taken after the German bombardment, showing children dancing in a ring, with the ruined city in the background. The symbolic fountain was restored after the war, but then removed in the 1950s as the city was rebuilt and developed.
The city of Volgograd, located 900 kilometres (600 miles) south of Moscow, used to be named after Josef Stalin. The city is held in popular memory as the site of the 1942-43 Battle of Stalingrad, a turning point in Russia's WWII fight against Nazi Germany.

Patriot Park: Russia's Military Disneyland
Children's playground synonymous with iconic buildings and funny cartoons. Yet another case with a playground in Russia, military themed. Children can play in a real tank and various other combat vehicles. Children's playground with a military theme that is located in the Kubinka city, about 63 km west of the City of Moscow, capital of Russia. Playground is named Patriot Park and inaugurated by the President, Vladimir Putin on Thursday (2015 June 18). Indeed this park is proof of Russia's show of strength as a superpower in the military field. In addition, the construction of the park is intended to foster a sense of patriotism of young generation and young children in Russia to be more love for his country. If small children usually come to the playground to ride the carousel, another case in Patriot Park. Parents can take their children climb into a real tank. Besides the tanks, there are still many other vehicles to try to ride the baby. Vehicles that include helicopters, warships, submarines and their missiles up. In total there are tens of thousands of vehicles and combat equipment on display there. Everything is of course safe because there are a lot of Russian soldiers guarding. Just imagine how thrilled the children when invited up into a real tank. Or when they are introduced to a variety of combat weapons belonging to the Russian military. It is rather terrible and still controversial. Depending traveler see from which side. From the plus side, children can be introduced to a variety of sophisticated military equipment, as well as fostering their love of country. On the other hand, if in such a small age, these children are able to understand that the tools of war that they play is not a toy and can be dangerous to others. The Patriot Park, traveler can also buy a variety of trinkets such as military camouflage jacket, boots, and a variety of shirts. Many families who took his son's shop in the gift shop. Playground is made in the context of educational tours, then you have to react wisely.

Battle of Stalingrad (1942-43)
As the Germans advanced towards Stalingrad in the Summer of 1942, the war came to the locals of the city and evacuation was slow to the speed of the Wehrmacht’s advancement.
Because the city bore Stalin’s name it was of a high importance for the morale of the Soviet forces to hold it.

Suspected suicide bomber kills 16 in Russia
At least 16 people have been killed after a suicide bomber detonated explosives in the entrance hall of a Russian train station.
This latest attack has Russia on edge just weeks before the start of the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Song Ji-sun reports. Security has been stepped up at train stations and airports around Russia after a suspected female suicide bomber attacked Volgograd train station Sunday, killing 16 people and injuring scores more.
Russian investigators say the bomber detonated explosives in front of a metal detector just inside the main entrance of the station that was bustling with holiday travelers.
According to our information, a female suicide bomber approached the metal detector, saw policeman there, got nervous and detonated the bomb.
It could've been worse if the bomber passed through into the waiting hall, as the explosion was the equivalent of 10 kilograms of TNT.
This is the second such attack in the same city in recent months... following a bus bombing in October that killed eight including the Islamist attacker.
While the bomber's identity has still to be confirmed, and more than one person could have been involved.... female suicide bombers known as black widows - the family members of dead insurgents - have carried out a number of attacks in nearby Muslim regions conflicting with the Russian administration.
Volgograd is only a few hundred kilometers northeast of Sochi -- raising security concerns ahead of the Winter Olympics, which kick off in February.
Song Ji-sun, Arirang News.
The women of Volgograd - From Moscow to Murmansk
Volgograd, formerly Stalingrad, has the status of a heroic city in Russia. Here million of people have been killed, and after the war, women had to go on, on their own.
Original titel: Mother Russia
In the first series: From Moscow to Magadan, Jelle Brandt Corstius traveled from West to East, focusing on the endless Russian countryside and the villages. In this second series: From Moscow to Murmansk, he travels from North to South along the largest river of Russia: the Volga River. A trip along the relatively unknown cities like Murmansk, Volgograd, Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod, but also to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Through topics like women in Russia, new censorship, the environmental problem from Russian perspective and the ideological vacuum, a relatively unknown side of Russia is once again exposed.

Orphan village helps Russia rethink fostering - BBC News
Russia has long struggled with overcrowded children's homes and a large number of orphans in need of housing, due in part to continued changes in government during the past many years.
These challenges were further brought to the country's attention when in 2012, after years of international adoptions, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a ban on Americans adopting Russian orphans.
But for more than a decade, a small orphan village south of Moscow has been experimenting with what the founders think may be a novel solution to support both foster children and the families who take them in.
And now the Russian government is also pitching in financially to help support this experimental community.
BBC Pop Up, the company's travelling bureau, has relocated to Russia for a month in order to film stories suggested by their viewers. The team visited Orion community village after they received an email from a viewer asking them to look into adoption and fostering.
