The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima (better known as the Sanctuary of Fatima), located in Cova da Iria, Fátima, Portugal, is one of the most important Marian shrines in the world.
In 1917, the year of the Soviet revolution, Jacinta Marto, Francisco Marto and Lúcia dos Santos, known as the three little shepherds, said they had witnessed six apparitions of Our Lady on May 13, .
In the essential part of the message, the apparition would have asked that the rosary be prayed every day, conversion, and penance.
In one of these apparitions, he asked to build a chapel in that place, which is currently the central part of the Sanctuary where an image of Our Lady of Fatima is displayed.
Over the years, the Sanctuary has been expanded, with two basilicas already existing, thus increasing the capacity of welcoming pilgrims in a covered area.
The Sanctuary of Fátima consists mainly of the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Rosary Hall / terrace, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and colonnades, retreat house of Nossa Senhora do Carmo and Rectory, retreat house of Our Lady of Sorrows and hostel For the sick, Pius XII and Paul VI Pastoral Center, as well as the vast Basilica of the Holy Trinity, inaugurated on 13th October 2007. The Lausperene Chapel ('Laus Perene' stands for Permanent Praise) (where it is permanently exposed The Most Holy Body of Christ in the Consecrated Host) and the Chapel of Reconciliation, dedicated to the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession).

The Sanctuary of Fátima (Portuguese: Santuário de Fátima), which is also referred to (incorrectly) as the Basilica of Our Lady of Fátima(Portuguese: Basilica de Nossa Senhora de Fátima), is a group of Roman Catholic buildings and structures in the (civil parish) of Fátima, in the municipality of Ourém in Portugal.
In addition to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary (Portuguese: Basilicia da Nossa Senhora de Rosário), Chapel of the Lausperene (Portuguese: Capela de Lausperene), a great oak tree (on which the Marian Apparitions occurred), a monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Portuguese: Monumento ao Sagrado Coração de Jesus) and the Chapel of the Apparitions (Portuguese: Capelinha das Aparições), where three children Lucia Santos and her cousins, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, were first visited by Mary. In addition, several other structures and monuments were built in the intervening years to commemorate the events associated with the events in 1916, including: the Hostel/Retreat House of Our Lady of Sorrows (Portuguese: Albergue e Casa de Retiros de Nossa Senhora das Dores), the rectory, the Hostel/Retreat of Our Lady of Mount Carmel(Portuguese: Casa de Retiros de Nossa Senhora do Carmo), a segment of the Berlin Wall (marking the consecreation of Russia to the Sacred Heart of Christ), monuments to Fathers Formigão and Fischer, a High Cross (by artist Robert Schad), and individual monuments to Pope Paul VI, Pope Pious XII, Pope John Paul II and D. José Alves Correia da Silva (whom had important roles in the history of site) and the Pastoral Centre of Paul VI (Portuguese: Centro Pastoral de Paulo VI).
Across from the main sanctuary is the much larger Basilica of the Santissima Trinidade constructed after 1953, owing to the limited scale of the Sanctuary for large-scale pilgrimages and religious services.

On 13 May 1917, three children were pasturing their little flock in the Cova da Iria, parish of Fatima, town of Vila Nova de Ourém. today the diocese of Leiria-Fatima. They were called: Lucia de Jesus, aged 10, and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, aged 9 and 7.
About midday, after praying the Rosary, as was their custom, they were amusing themselves building a little house of stones scattered around he place where the Basilica now stands. Suddenly they saw a brilliant light, and thinking it to be lightning, they decided to go home. But as they went down the slope another flash lit up the place, and they saw on the top of a holmoak (where the Chapel of Apparitions now stands), a Lady more brilliant than the sun, from whose hands hung a white rosary.
CHAPEL OF APPARITIONS
The very heart of the Sanctuary. It was the first edifice constructed in the Cova da Iria, at the place of Our Lady´s Apparitions. The exact spot is marked by a marble pillar on which the Statue of Our Lady is placed. Here converge the four million pilgrims who visit the Sanctuary each year.
BASILICA
Begun in 1928 and consecrated on 7 October 1953, its 15 altars are dedicated to the 15 mysteries of the Rosary.
The painting above the high altar depicts the Message of Our Lady to the little shepherds, prepared by the Angel of Portugal, through their encounter with Christ in the Eucharist. The Bishop of the diocese is shown kneeling on the left side, and the figures of Pope Pius XII (who consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1942, and whose Legate crowned the Statue of Our Lady in 1946), of Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI.
Scenes of the apparitions are represented in stained glass, as well as invocations from the Litany of Our Lady.
In the four corners of the Basilica interior are placed the statues of the great apostles of the Rosary and of devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary: St. Anthony Claret, St. Dominic of Gusman, St. John Eudes and St. Stephen, King of Hungary.
The tombs of Francisco and Jacinta are in the Basilica, and, in the chancel, are the mortal remains of D. José Alves Correia da Silva, first Bishop of Leiria after its restoration in 1920.
The monumental organ, mounted in 1952, has about 12 thousand pipes.
PERPETUAL ADORATION CHAPEL
Situated at the end of the colonnade, on the eastern side, this chapel for perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament exposed, is a place of silent prayer and adoration.
