The Church of Sao Roque And It's Ceiling Painting - Lisbon Travel Blog
BRAND NEW!!! Check out my DJI Osmo Pocket Test Footage:
The outside of the church is very unassuming but the moment you step inside it will make your jaw drop. The ceiling painting of Francisco Venegas is so beautiful and huge. It will take you a while to take it all in. The attached museum is also well worth a visit.

Sao Roque Church in Lisbon PORTUGAL
The Church of Saint Roch was built by the Jesuits in 1533 and it represents the oldest Jesuit church in Lisbon. The church inscription is connected to an historical fact. In the 16th century a cemetery where to bury all the victims of the plague was built in an area located outside the city walls. In 1506 a temple dedicated to Saint Roque was built; he was the protector of the sicks. After thirty years the temple was entrusted to the Society of Jesus which built a bigger temple, keeping the original Chapel of São Roque. The project was designed by Filippo Terzi, an Italian architect and engineer who worked at the service of the Spanish and Portuguese royal families. In the 18th century a royal decree ordered the expulsion of all Jesuits from Portugal, and their goods became property of the Charity House of Lisbon. At the moment they belong to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia.

This film shows the essentials of the Saint Roch Church, this interesting Portuguese building located in Lisbon, Portugal. For me, it is, perhaps, the most beautiful church in Portugal.

Most expensive chapel in Europe in Roca Church, Lisbon
Absolutely Amazing The Igreja de São Roque (Church of Saint Roch) in Lisbon. The most notable chapel is the 18th-century Chapel of St. John the Baptist (Capela de São João Baptista), a project by Nicola Salvi and Luigi Vanvitelli constructed in Rome of many precious stones and disassembled, shipped and reconstructed in São Roque; at the time it was reportedly the most expensive chapel in Europe.

Igreja de São Roque (Lisboa)
The Igreja de São Roque (Church of Saint Roch) in Lisbon was the earliest Jesuit church in the Portugese world, and one of the first Jesuit churches anywhere. It served as the Society's home church in Portugal for over 200 years, before the Jesuits were expelled from that country. After the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake, the church and its ancillary residence were given to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (the Charity House of Lisbon) to replace their church and headquarters which had been destroyed. It remains a part of the Casa today, one if its many heritage buildings.
The Igreja de São Roque was one of the few buildings in Lisbon to survive the Earthquake relatively unscathed. When built in the 16th century it was the first Jesuit church designed in the auditorium-church style specifically for preaching. It contains a number of chapels, most in the Baroque style of early 17th century. The most notable chapel is 18th-century Chapel of St. John the Baptist (Capela de São João Baptista), constructed in Rome of many precious stones and disassembled, shipped and reconstructed in São Roque; at the time it was reportedly the most expensive chapel in Europe.

Lisboa Saõ Roque Igreja by Urbexan
Barroco Art.
Dégoulinantes d'or, d'angelots !
