GENOA, EXPLORING the spectacular monuments of MONUMENTAL CEMETERY (STAGLIENO), ITALY ⚱️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit the Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno which is an extensive cemetery located on a hillside in the district of Staglieno of Genoa, Italy, famous for its monumental sculpture. Covering an area of more than a square kilometre, it is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe.
It is a stunning cemetery famous for its extraordinarily delicate & lifelike mourning sculptures
Designed by the famous Genovese architect Carlo Barabino in a Neo-Classical style, the Staglieno Cemetery (Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno) opened in 1851. A compromise between the formality of the traditional orderly camposanto layout and the newly fashionable wilderness style of boschetto irregulare, seen in Père Lachaise in Paris, the grounds included cloisters, garden paths, and a reproduction of the famous Pantheon in Rome. The new cemetery quickly became the fashionable death option, and increasingly was a showcase for world-class sculpture.
Italy, a European country with a long Mediterranean coastline, has left a powerful mark on Western culture and cuisine. Its capital, Rome, is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Other major cities include Florence, with Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David and Brunelleschi's Duomo; Venice, the city of canals; and Milan, Italy’s fashion capital.

Genova - Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno (Genoa - Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno)

Cimitero di Staglieno, Genoa: Joy Division, Mrs Oscar Wilde & Italy's art gallery to the dead
Genoa's beautiful Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno (Staglieno Cemetery) has featured on the cover of British rock band Joy Division's 'Closer' album and 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' sleeve. It is also the final resting place of Constance Lloyd (the wife of Oscar Wilde) and has a huge collection of stunning life-sized sculptures marking the graves and tombs of Genoa's 19th century dead, looking more like an art gallery than a grave yard x
PS thank you to my dear friend Shane Tucker for lending me his copy of 'Closer' for this video.

Genoa (Genova) is a port city and the capital of northwest Italy's Liguria region. It's known for its central role in maritime trade over many centuries. In the old town stands the Romanesque Cathedral of San Lorenzo, with its black-and-white-striped facade and frescoed interior. Narrow lanes open onto monumental squares like Piazza de Ferrari, site of an iconic bronze fountain and Teatro Carlo Felice opera house.

Il Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno - Genova - Italia. (last part)
The Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno is an extensive cemetery located on a hillside in the district of Staglieno of Genoa, Italy, famous for its monumental sculpture. CoveriThe design of the cemetery of the City of Genoa dates back to Napoleon's Edict of Saint-Cloud from 1804, when he forbade burials in churches and towns.
The original project was approved in 1835 by the City's architect Carlo Barabino (1768--1835). However, he died the same year as a result of the cholera epidemic that struck the city ng an area of more than a square kilometre, it is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe. and the project passed to his assistant and pupil Giovanni Battista Resasco (1798--1871).
Part of the south-eastern hillside of Staglieno was acquired for the cemetery. The site of the Villa Vaccarezza was chosen as the most suitable, being both sparsely populated and close to the centre of the city. Work began in 1844 and it was opened on 2 January 1851. On that day there were four burials.
Over time there were several extensions and the cemetery now includes sections for an English cemetery, a Protestant one and a Jewish one. At the centre of the site is a tall statue of Faith, sculpted by Santo Varni. Facing the statue, up a grand staircase, is a domed Pantheon (a copy of the Pantheon in Rome) with a Doric portico flanked by two marble statues of the prophets Jeremiah and Job.
At the time Genoa was a major centre of learning within Italy and attracted reformists and an affluent bourgeoisie. Wishing to place long-lasting memorials to remember their work and moral accomplishments, they developed a tradition of funereal sculpture, particularly realistic works, to be placed with their tombs. The cemetery contains the graves of Oscar Wilde's wife Constance Lloyd, Ferruccio Parri, Fabrizio De André, Nino Bixio, and Giuseppe Mazzini.
Significant sculptors with work here include Leonardo Bistolfi, Augusto Rivalta, Giulio Monteverde, and Edoardo Alfieri.
The strong British influence in the city of Genoa in the late 19th century is reflected in the separate British Cemetery at Staglieno which also contains the graves of British and Commonwealth servicemen from both the First and Second World Wars. Mark Twain briefly praises the cemetery in his Innocents Abroad, and Friedrich Nietzsche visited the cemetery frequently in the 1880s with his friend Paul Ree and had many long philosophical discussions as they strolled through the funereal colonnades.
The Funerary Art is present in the sculptures of Cemeteries. The beauty of the sculptures of the headstones, graves and mausoleums, it transmit the most varied emotions through Funerary Art. The Funerary Art is a term used to designate the works done to stay on the graves of the cemeteries. It is a form of representation that is linked to the given context of historical, ideological, social and economic, interpreting the life and death. This interpretation is made through a set of symbols or a narrative work, using various materials such as marble, granite, iron and brass. The funerary art reached its apogee in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and today it is less used because of advancing of the egalitarian and horrible garden cemeteries, without the presence of the beautiful Funerary Art.

man erg testo tradotto.
L'assassino vive dentro di me: io posso sentirlo muovere.
ma poi i suoi occhi saliranno e guardare attraverso il mio;
Come posso ottenere aiuto?
Dittatori, salvatori, rifugiati
in guerra e pace
