Heart of Europe Grand Tour Part 28 St. Pisa Italy. Leaning Tower of Pisa. The Journey of our life.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italian: Torre pendente di Pisa) or simply the Tower of Pisa (Torre di Pisa [ˈtorre di ˈpiːza]) is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa, known worldwide for its unintended tilt.
It is situated behind the Cathedral and is the third oldest structure in Pisa's Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo) after the Cathedral and the Pisa Baptistry. The tower's tilt began during construction, caused by an inadequate foundation on ground too soft on one side to properly support the structure's weight. The tilt increased in the decades before the structure was completed, and gradually increased until the structure was stabilized (and the tilt partially corrected) by efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The height of the tower is 55.86 metres (183.27 feet) from the ground on the low side and 56.67 metres (185.93 feet) on the high side. The width of the walls at the base is 2.44 m (8 ft 0.06 in). Its weight is estimated at 14,500 metric tons (16,000 short tons). The tower has 296 or 294 steps; the seventh floor has two fewer steps on the north-facing staircase. Prior to restoration work performed between 1990 and 2001, the tower leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees, but the tower now leans at about 3.99 degrees. This means that the top of the tower is displaced horizontally 3.9 metres (12 ft 10 in) from the centre.

Video notes:
First you have to buy a train ticket. It is super easy. You don’t need to buy the tickets in advance. Find a ticket machine, press the language you need, then select buy your train ticket. One thing to keep in mind is that the names of the city are written in Italian. For example, Florence is Firenze. Next, pick the date and the time. The cost is 8.40 euros each trip. There’s no assigned seats so get there early to get seats.
The train doors don’t open for you. You have to press the button to get inside the train.
We are here in Pisa! It is a 20 minutes walk from the train station to the Square of Miracles where the Leaning Tower is of Pisa is located.
Buy the tickets to the Leaning Tower in advance on the actual website. You can buy the tickets 20 days before the day you’re visiting and up to 1 day in advance. Watch out for third party websites that try to rip you off by charging you double the cost. If you just want to climb up the tower, it is only 18 euros. Other websites will try to charge you up to 38 dollars for the same ticket.
Your ticket comes with free entrance to the Cathedral. Don’t forget to take advantage of that!
You can’t bring purses or backpacks into the tower. Don’t worry, they will keep your stuff in a locker for free.
Ever wonder why this tower leans? “Pisa” comes from the Greek word for “marshy land.” You would think the architects would have taken the subsoil into account while building a very tall bell tower, Nope! The foundation of the build is shallow and heavy. By the time they built the 2nd story the tower began to sink to one side. They tired to fix their mistake by building taller columns, but that did not help the poor tower.
At the very top you can walk a circle around the bell tower. You can take your time taking in the view of the city. They say you only have 30 minutes up there but nobody is really there to throw you out when your time is up. I was up there for well over 30 minutes. I am actually amazed how they are able to manage the crowds at each place we’ve been to. Limiting the amount of people at the entrance definitely made the visit very peaceful.
If you want to get a picture of the city with the leaning tower, then pay 5 euros to get in and see the view from the top of the Baptistery
With your tickets to the tower you can visit the cathedral for free. You can get a fixed time ticket for free to get in. I went in just fine without getting one. I guess it would depend on which days you are going and if there is an event going on. Check on their website to make sure there isn’t an event during the day you are visiting.
Alongside the Arno river is the Santa Maria della Spina church. It is free to visit. It’s a nice short stop. Della Spina translation is “of the thorn.” This represents the thorn placed on christ during his Passion and crucifixion. It was originally named Santa Maris di Pontenovo after a bridge that was nearby but it collapsed in the 15th century and was never rebuilt.

Hi I’m Abi with Holiday Extras Travel Guides, and this time we’re in Pisa. We’ll be giving you all the essential information that you need to Travel better. Covering tips on money, language, getting around, and of course the iconic leaning tower.
But first here’s bit about this small but historic city.
Once a powerful maritime city state, modern Pisa is a small town packed full of culture, with a long and interesting history. Although it’s iconic leaning tower made it world famous, there is much more to Pisa than this one landmark.
Friendly locals, great food, and classic architecture, make it one of our favourite places to visit in Italy.
Pisa has one airport that’s only one short hop from the City centre, and it’s here where our guide starts
Pisa airport is the main gateway into Tuscany, and receives almost 5 million passengers every year. It’s really close to town, and transfers are available by public bus, taxi or the Pisa Mover service. When taking the bus look out for the big blue City bus signs. Taking the Lam Rossa line towards Pisa, Tickets cost €1.20, buses leave every 10 minutes and the journey takes 6 minutes to Pisa Centrale.
A taxi should cost around €10, with an extra €2.55 charge on Sundays and public holidaysNew in 2017 the Pisa Mover shuttle service costs €2.70 each way and gets you into town in just 5 minutes. It’s defiantly our recommended way to get into the centre.
Pisa is a small city and one that’s best enjoyed on foot, infant it’s usually quicker and easier this way. For example a walk from Pisa Centrale should take no more than twenty minutes.
The bus service in Pisa uses three main lines; red, green and blue. The red line, ro LAM Rossa, is the one that takes you to the Leaning Tower. Tickets are available in tobacco shops, the station and airport. Buy your ticket before you travel and then validate as you board.
Bear in mind that after 9pm the buses switch to a reduced night service until midnight.
Tickets are available in 70, 120 and 240 minute variations and the 70-minute ticket is also available in books of 4 or 10.
Driving in Pisa is similar to other popular Italian cities, in that it has a limited-traffic-zone, called the ZTL. Driving in this zone will incur a fine between €60 and €100 each time you pass a traffic camera (meaning you can get fined multiple times for driving along the same street).
The Leaning Tower is one of Italy’s most iconic sights, and is what Pisa is best known for, here are the key facts:
The Towers characteristic lean is caused by a combination of it’s small foundations and the soft soil on which it was built. After a programme of structural strengthening was completed in 2001 the tower is now safe to enter.
When buying tickets you'll be given a time slot to return to enter to the tower. This could be up to 3 hours after purchase.
So we think it’s well worth booking your tickets in advance to avoid the long wait.
Only 40 people are allowed inside at any one time, and children under 8 are not permitted at all.
No bags at all are allowed in the tower. You can take a camera, but your bag must go in the free security deposit.
You're allowed 35 minutes inside the tower after entering.
Opening times are varied, we'll link to the official website in the description to the official website.

Pisa 2012
One of the outstanding day trips that you can enjoy from Florence is a journey by train over to the city of Pisa, famous, of course, for its Leaning Tower.it is an easy train ride -- it just takes one hour to get from the center of Florence into Pisa. You could spend about three hours in Pisa on your visit and see a lot of fine sights in addition to the Tower.
You could get from the train station to the Tower by taxi or by city bus, or better yet, walk.It is a wonderful walk that only takes about 30 minutes -- about 1 mile -- and you go right through the main shopping street of town, the Corso Italia.Even if you are there on a Sunday afternoon as we were, the pedestrian street will be filled with local people, and yet most of the stores are closed.
The road then crosses the Arno River and gives you wonderful views looking in both directions at this UNESCO World Heritage Site.. This leads directly into a very old part of the city, picturesque buildings, arcades over the sidewalks, outdoor restaurants and lots of people. In another 10 minutes, you will reach the famous Tower.
If you want to climb the Leaning Tower you should check with your hotel desk for instructions, as the daily number of entrances is strictly limited. Be sure to also visit the magnificent Romanesque cathedral and baptistery, which too many day-trippers overlook in their rush to see the tower and get back on the bus. Another advantage of going on your own by train is that you can take your time in this Field of Miracles, and then hop the city bus when you are ready to return to the train station for the hour ride back to Florence.

Italy Tour (Rome, Pisa, Milan & Vatican City) | GoPro Travel
Visited Italy in December 2015. M journey started by landing in Rome and then visited worlds smallest country Vatican City a city-state surrounded by Rome is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. It's home to the Pope and a trove of iconic art and architecture. I heard the live annual speech of Pope Francis there!
Visited most important places of Rome, then took a train for a one day stay in Pisa where got a mandatory picture bearing the leaning tower of Pisa. Our apologies for throwing bottle of wine in the river :(
From Pisa to Milan we took a Bus. It was a beautiful journey. In Milan we visited almost all tourist attractions such as Sforza Castle, Cathedral of Milan and some museums.
So far. Italy is my favorite travelling country of Europe... very welcoming, great food, cool people and beautiful pieces of architectures all around!

Pisa & Florence One Day City Trip
Visited Pisa and Florence in one day with the car. We arrived in Pisa at around 6am on a Tuesday morning and there were tons of parking available. The tourist stores haven't even opened yet and there were like 2 or 3 other small tourist groups around....so it's pretty worth it to go early.
After strolling around Pisa and getting our photographs, we headed towards Florence. The first stop was Piazzale Michelangelo, a nice square with great overview over Florence. There is parking just next to it, and also here we recommend you to go early. This is a common tourist tour bus stop too and parking is very limited.
In the city we parked near the train station as there were plenty of parking opportunities all around it.
Florence is a stunning city and well worth to visit if you are in Italy. The Duomo is the prettiest we've seen in our opinion :)
Don't forget to eat the Bistecca Alla Fiorentina, this is a must try in Florence.

Pisa - original Tuscany, Italy 4K
english / deutsch::
If you want to explore the sights of Pisa, the month of May, so the preseason. The city is a well known place because of the Campanile, the leaning tower of Pisa. Many tourists leave not far from Leaning Tower, interesting is Pisa, as it is one of the cities of Tuscany, which has remained quite original. The city center extends from the train station in the south to Piazza dei Miracoli with the Leaning Tower in the north. The bridge Ponte di Mezzo, which crosses the Arno river, is the highlight of the historic quarters of San Martino, Santa Maria, San Francesco and Sant'Antonio. One can wonderfully stay in the small streets, a clear trip tip from me!

Exploring Downtown Pisa - Brief Video Tour (Pisa, Italy)
We took a nice long 3-4 hour roadtrip from Milan to Pisa to check out the Leaning Tower. The drive was really nice, but there were soooo manyyyy tolls on the way! (Kinda like driving in France too!). This video is taken from the shopping area directly beside the Leaning Tower. To be honest, there isn't a great deal to do in Pisa (other than seeing and maybe climbing the tower), but here is a previous of the something else lol... There is a large student community in Pisa, so living there, it may be a different experience. As a tourist, you have the tower!
NOTE: There are a lot of African men selling selfy-sticks for 10EUR+ all around the tower. Parking was free, but they will hang around the free parking spaces, usher you in, then call you bad people for NOT buying their overpriced euro-store items. So, beware of that!

Pisa (/ˈpiːzə/; Italian pronunciation: [ˈpiːsa; ˈpiːza]) is a city in Tuscany, Central Italy, straddling the Arno just before it empties into the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is the capital city of the Province of Pisa. Although Pisa is known worldwide for its leaning tower (the bell tower of the city's cathedral), the city of over 90,834 residents (around 200,000 with the metropolitan area) contains more than 20 other historic churches, several medieval palaces and various bridges across the Arno. Much of the city's architecture was financed from its history as one of the Italian maritime republics.
The city is also home of the University of Pisa, which has a history going back to the 12th century and also has the mythic Napoleonic Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies as the best sanctioned Superior Graduate Schools in Italy.

I give it an overall 9/10.

Cleanliness: 9/10
Breakfast: 7/10
Very cool hostel! It was the only hostel that we stayed at that had a pool. It had a really cool outdoor patio area with a small pool, bar, and plenty of seating area. The drawback was that, although it was summer, and very hot outside, the water was freezing cold! I did not get in at all. The beer was overpriced, at the bar so I found a corner grocery store nearby and found the same beer, twice the size, half the price.
Just remember to sneak your booze in and out! don't throw away your booze in the hostel because they will charge you extra for any outside alcohol on premise or kick you out. This hostel had a lot of younger people and was a short walk from many of the main attractions in the city center.
The bunk beds kind of sucked and hurt climbing on and off.
