Borneo | Caves, Long Boats, Village Life - UNESCO Mulu Park | Malaysia Luxury Travel Blog
Exploring the beauty of Malaysia and it's rich cultural heritage was never more fun for me than THIS trip to Sarawak, Borneo. And heading out on a traditional Malaysian long boat before any other tourists in Gunung Mulu National Park was the BEST choice to enhance my travel experience. Not only was I able to shoot the Cave of the Winds and Clearwater Cave in the UNESCO World Heritage Site without anyone else around but it offered me a glimpse into real village life along the Sungai Melinau Paku river that I would have never seen otherwise.

Mulu National Park - World Heritage Site, Borneo Tourism
The Gunung Mulu National Park is a national park in Miri Division, Sarawak, Malaysia, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses caves and karst formations in a mountainous equatorial rainforest setting.
The pinnacle formations of Gunung Api and Benarat are spectacular examples of this limestone feature. Mulu’s Pinnacles tower above the surrounding landscape, some reaching heights of 40 to 50 metres. Centuries of water have eroded and dissolved the rock into razor sharp spikes which knife skywards through the surrounding rainforest.
Deer Cave is reached by following a three kilometer plankwalk which passes through peat swamp, alluvial flats and limestone outcrops. Not surprisingly, Deer Cave is home to many species of bats. Between 5 and 7pm, if the weather is fine, visitors may be treated to the spectacular sight of a black cloud of free-tailed bats emerging from the entrance of the cave to go in search of food. Others caves that are open for tourists includes clearwater cave, lang cave, wind cave and etc.
After seeing the show caves, visitors often want to see more of Mulu’s vast cave system. To cater for this demand and satisfy the curious, the National Park Department has identified a number of sites that are suitable for adventure caving trips, from the beginner to intermediate level such as Lagang Cave & Racer Cave up to the Advance level like Clearwater connection & Sarawak Chamber

Watch it in the highest quality setting please! But apologies for some low quality clips ????
THE Gunung Mulu National Park is a world heritage UNESCO site. It really is an area of outstanding beauty - we visited four show caves, and as we entered each cave, we kept getting speechless as to how massive the caves are - Lang Cave to Deer Cave to Wind Cave and then Clearwater Cave. There's a map in the video which (hopefully) showed how HUGE the cave passage is and we only visited a tiny fraction of it .
Totally worth it to visit at least once in your life! So, go now! Book your tour!

The Hee Family Visits the Mulu Caves
In Borneo, deep in Sarawak's Gunung Mulu National Park, lie the most spectacular caves on earth. Over millennia the flow of water draining from the slopes of G.Mulu towards the sea has cut deep gorges through the Park's limestone mountains and, within the rock itself, a complex network of vast caves has been formed. Hope you enjoy the Mandarin song that is a prayer to God to open our eyes so that we can know God. It is sung by a local Malaysian pastor.

About 3 million bats flew out from Deer Cave in Gunung Mulu National Park for dinner around 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

More To Discover : Mulu National Park
Mulu National Park
One of Nature’s most spectacular achievements and the ‘Jewels in the Crown’ of Sarawak.
Gunung Mulu National Park is an expanding network rainforest, flowing rivers and clear jungle streams.
The caves of Mulu are important for their classic features of underground geomorphology that demonstrates an evolutionary history of more than 1.5 million years.
A breath-taking natural wonder, this system contains a number of record-breaking caves.
Lang Cave
Lang Cave is the smallest of 4 ‘Show Caves’ that has a spectacular display of stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, shawls and rimstone pools.
The geological development was influenced more by the action of standing groundwater dissolving the limestone rather than an active stream passage eroding it.
It was named after a guide who led an expedition in the late 70s to research the caves of Mulu.
Deer Cave
In contrast, Deer Cave is not only the biggest show cave at Mulu, but it is also the largest cave passage in the world.
A powerful underground river once flowed through this area, dissolving and eroding the limestones the limestone to create this incredible space.
Deer Cave is simply huge – it is just over 2 kilometers in length and never less than 90 meters high and wide.
This is the area where deer used to shelter so the local Penan and Berawan people named the Gua Payau or Gua Rusa (Deer Cave).
Bat Exodus
Every evening (unless it’s raining), millions of bats exit the cave in spiraling, twirling clouds that look a bit like swarms of cartoon bees to go hunting.
They exited in waves, its corkscrew trajectory is designed to create a threatening-looking shape to ward off any predators.
Penan Settlement
Cruise up the Melinau river in a longboat and visit a Penan longhouse & handicraft market at Batu Bungan.
Cave of the Winds
The Wind Cave is a part of the Clearwater Cave System and its specialty is that the cool breezes flow through the narrow parts of the cave, hence the name.
The unique rock formations, stalagmites and stalactites illuminate the majestic column named ‘Kings Chamber’.
Clearwater Cave
From Wind Cave, you can either follow a plank walk or take a boat to a picnic area near the entrance of Clearwater Cave.
Clearwater cave is one of the biggest cave systems in the world, measuring over 220km in length.
With its underground river, it is a fascinating cave to scroll around.
At the base of the steps, there is a crystal clear pool that is filled by water that flows out of the cave.
World Heritage Site
To be placed on the list of natural World Heritage Areas it must meet at least one of four natural criteria.
1. It provides an outstanding example of the major stages of the Earth’s history
2. It is an outstanding example representing significant on-going ecological and biological processes.
3. It provides the most important natural habitats for in-situ conservation of species of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science and
4. It contains superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural
Mulu meets all four of these!

Gunung Mulu National Park near Miri, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses incredible caves and karst formations in a mountainous equatorial rainforest setting. The park is famous for its caves and the expeditions that have been mounted to explore them and their surrounding rainforest, most notably the Royal Geographical Society Expedition of 1977 - 1978, which saw over 100 scientists in the field for 15 months.
The national park is named after Mount Mulu, the second highest mountain in Sarawak.
Eight species of hornbill have been spotted in Mulu including the Rhinoceros Hornbill Buceros rhinoceros which features on Sarawak state emblem, the White-crowned Hornbill Berenicornis/Aceros comatus and the Helmeted Hornbill Buceros vigil with its large solid casque (bill).
Twenty seven species of bat have been recorded in Mulu. Deer Cave in the southern limestone hills of the park is home to an enormous colony of Wrinkle-lipped bats Tadarida plicata. The bats exit the cave almost every evening in search of food in a spectacular exodus. A huge mound of guano in the cave is evidence of the size of the bat colony that roosts in the cave's high ceilings.
Mulu's mammals also include the Bearded pig Sus barbatus, the moonrat Echinosorex gymnurus, shrews, the Bornean Tarsier Tarsius bancanus, the long-tailed Macaque Macaca fascicularis, gibbons, squirrels, and three types of deer including the small barking deer and mouse deer. The small Malaysian sun bear Helarctos malayanus, which is the only bear known in South-East Asia, has also been identified in Gunung Mulu National Park.
Gunung Mulu National Park contains a large number of plant species, including flowering plants, trees, and fungi. Geology, soil types and topography have given rise to a rich tapestry of plant zones and types. On Gunung Mulu itself these include lowland mixed dipterocarp forest, lower montane forest, mossy or upper montane forest and summit zone vegetation on the highest peaks. On the limestones there is lowland limestone forest, lower and upper montane limestone forest. Other plant communities dominate the alluvial plains, including kerangas (tropical heath forest) and peatswamp forest.
