SORRY FOR THE CRAPPY FILMING, CHECK OUT MY MY RECENT VIDEO OF THIS LAYOUT:
Extreme Trains:
Rave reviews from all over the world are flooding in about the Colorado Model Railroad Museum, located by the mainline of the Union Pacific Railroad in Greeley, Colorado. This one-of-a-kind facility features over 600 railroad-related artifacts ranging from a Virginia and Truckee Railroad switch key to a full-sized Colorado and Southern wooden Caboose available for examining both inside and out.
Designed to appeal to visitors of all ages and nationalities, the CMRM has set record attendance marks in its first four years of operation and has become the leading year-round tourist attraction in Weld County, Colorado. The highlight of the museum is its huge, 5,500 sq. ft. operating model railroad dubbed the finest model railroad I've ever seen, by the 30-year senior editor of Model Railroader magazine, Jim Hediger, Milwaukee, WI.
Visitors may actually stroll through this three dimensional creation while the railroad is in operation. They are surrounded by rugged mountains with handmade features including 16,000 fir, 8,000 deciduous and 4,000 aspen trees with rivers abound. Scenery becomes three dimensional art. The use of cameras is encouraged and guides are available to answer railroad-related questions and to point out unique aspects of this one-of-a-kind modeling wonder. Take a visual tour through this amazing railroad in miniature via the CMRM website, then plan of visiting the museum in person the next time you visit Colorado.

Watch a 283 car Union Pacific coal train climb the 2.5 percent grade to the Quartz Mountain summit. Powered by 11 locomotives -- two on the head end, with five more sets distributed through the train. The train is three scale miles long (200 actual feet) and weighs 30,000 prototype tons. Engineers Luke Brendsel and Scott Warren keep their train together as it crests the summit and descends to Lakeview. The total run length is over 20 scale miles (1350 actual feet).
To get a better idea of the route followed you can watch an animated track plan of the layout showing an eastbound run over the Quartz Mountain summit at:

The Great Northern Empire Builder at the Colorado Model Railroad Museum
The Great Northern Empire Builder tours the Oregon, California & Eastern at the Colorado Model Railroad Museum.
In 1951 Great Northern Railway introduced a brand new Empire Builder trainset, naming it the Mid-Century Empire Builder. It was powered by three EMD F3 passenger locomotives, and it used a 17-car westbound consist. All cars were flat-roofed.
During 1955 the Great Northern took delivery of dome coaches and full-length lounges; all were called Great Domes (the use of the word Great applied to the railroad, not the type of dome). Great Northern subsequently changed the name of the train from Mid-Century Empire Builder to the Incomparable Great Dome Empire Builder. This train represents the summer tourist season Empire Builder. The configuration is essentially correct from 1956 through 1964. The summer train had 4 power units and 17 cars.
From front to back, here is the consist:

My visit to the Colorado Railroad Museum
During the summer I traveled through Colorado and saw that they had multiple railways in the state, of course I visited them. This video shows the Colorado Railroad Museum located in Golden and has a multiple variety of narrow gauge and standard gauge equipment and is restored to be either displayed for the public or restored to operate pulling trains. Sadly there were no trains running that day but there were still a lot to see and a lot to do.
Union Pacific Cattle Train at the Colorado Model Railroad Museum
Union Pacific Stock Train at the Colorado Model Railroad Museum - . The Union Pacific moves cattle from Lakeview to Klamath Falls on the Oregon, California and Eastern Railroad.
This video was shot while the museum was open and the railroad was operating in Docent Mode. In Docent Mode the entire railroad, including all trains, signals, and turnouts, is completely computer controlled. This leaves the docents free to interact with public.
Since the museum was open to the public I didn't want to block aisles with a tripod, so all the footage was shot hand-held.
BTW - The museum is a great place to take those out of town visitors. 680 10th St. Greeley, Colorado. See for opening hours/
