Picturing American Folk Masters
Photographer Tom Pich and folklorist Barry Bergey, co-authors of the recently published book Folk Masters: A Portrait of America, discuss their award-winning project. During the past 25 years, Pich has traveled across the country to the homes and studios of recipients of the National Endowment for the Arts' National Heritage Fellowships, the highest honor given to America's folk and traditional artists. His photographs provide a unique portrait of their art, their personalities and their culture. While each image tells a story on its own, Barry Bergey, the former Director of Folk and Traditional Arts at the National Endowment for the Arts, provides further insight into the lives of the featured artist as well as the remarkable stories behind each photograph. Folk Masters documents and honors the extraordinary women and men who take traditional arts to new heights while also ensuring their continuation from generation to generation.

Sylvia Yount is the Lawrence A. Fleischman Curator in Charge of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she oversees fine and decorative arts from the colonial period to the early twentieth century. In her curatorial and administrative practice, Yount works to expand and enrich traditional collection and gallery narratives by including Latin and Native American art as well as work by women and artists of color. Her presentation explores the challenges and opportunities of these efforts in the context of shifting definitions of American art and identity, both past and present.
Lectures begin at 6:30 p.m. Free tickets in the G Street Lobby at 6 p.m.

Thunder at the Gates: The Black Civil War Regiments that Redeemed America
Soon after the Emancipation Proclamation, abolitionists began to call for the creation of black regiments. The South, and most of the North responded with outrage. Meanwhile, Massachusetts, launched one of the greatest experiments in American history. In Thunder at the Gates, Douglas Egerton chronicles the formation and battlefield triumphs of the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Infantry and the 5th Cavalry--regiments led by whites but composed of black men. A book signing will follow the program.
LECTURE: La Tanya Autry - August 08, 2019
La Tanya S. Autry, Ph.D. candidate, University of Delaware; Gund Curatorial Fellow, Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland
From W.E.B. Du Bois’ “The American Negro Exhibit” to The Black Panther newspaper to the contemporary series of direct actions by the grassroots organization Decolonize This, La Tanya S. Autry will discuss a range of liberatory aims and modes that artists and organizers employ to spark institutional change in the visual arts and beyond. Through her intersectional, equity-centered approach, Autry also explores the limits and possibilities of museums in advancing racial justice.
Presented in conjunction with the special exhibition Color Line.
Landscape Architecture in Latin America: Unpacking Theory, Practice, and Agency, Panel 1
Women in Design (WiD) and Latin GSD, in collaboration with the Department of Landscape Architecture, present “Landscape Architecture in Latin America: Unpacking Theory, Practice, and Agency.” This symposium will provide an opportunity to debate the current and future state of landscape architecture in Latin America.
Latin America is formed by a diverse set of territories, offering both challenges and opportunities to the landscape discipline. This symposium brings together professionals from several countries to discuss the complex social, political, and environmental realities engaged in their work. From the creation of ecological corridors in Bogota to urbanization in the Galapagos Islands, these designers interpret landscape through a range of lenses that include urbanism, architecture, ecology, and social engagement.
Speaking to the many interdisciplinary interests at the GSD, panelists will frame conversations around theory and practice, established firms and emerging voices, and the role of equity in design. What is the intersection of research and built work? How is the discipline taught and regulated? How does landscape translate to academia and public policy? By presenting the current state of landscape architecture in Latin America this symposium will provide a space for imagining its future possibilities.
Cambridge Talks X | Bound and Unbound: The Sites of Utopia PhD Colloquium
4/14/16
In the five hundred years since the publication of Thomas More’s Of A Republic’s Best State and of the New Island of Utopia (1516), the project of imagining an ideal society has emerged as simultaneously regenerative and devastating on multiple fronts: for the concept of the polity, for the composition of social fabrics, and, most relevant from the vantage of the design disciplines, for the formation of buildings, cities, and territories. This year’s Cambridge Talks, now in its tenth edition, aims to provide a spectrum of exemplary instances of utopia’s modern guise.
In the main conference panels, we bring together speakers to address the rivalry between those utopian endeavors that organize space mainly through social relations and production, and those whose expansive impulse searches out some form of technical mastery over spatial configuration. In other words, utopia can be understood as either embodied or totalizing, bound or unbound. By taking examples from the 19th and 20th centuries, the case studies presented here—from communes and plantations to infrastructural projects and global ecologies—exhibit various attempts to imagine social conditions alongside spatial ones. A concluding discussion will touch upon the philosophical and theoretical ramifications of utopia today.

Eric Washington, author of Manhattanville: Old Heart of West Harlem; Phil Bicker, senior photo editor at Time; and Sharon Zukin, professor of sociology at the Graduate Center, join in the discussion.
