When most people think of New Jersey, they think of this ...

But I want to tell you about my New Jersey, the real New Jersey.
My name is Marlene Monfiletto Nice. I'm the Assistant Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Vienna. And I was born and raised in Belmar, N.J. I still call Manasquan my home. Those are two beach towns on the Jersey Shore. New Jersey has 127 miles of beautiful coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. That stretches from Sandy Hook to Cape May, N.J. Tourists from northern New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia flock to our beaches in the summertime.
New Jersey is one of the original 13 colonies. So many battles were fought in New Jersey during the Revolutionary War, that it earned the nickname, The Crossroads of the Revolution. One battle in particular, The Battle of Trenton, was extremely important. That's when George Washington crossed the Delaware and surprised the Hessian troops on Christmas day and that turned the war in the favor of the colonists.
New Jersey's real nickname is the Garden State. In New Jersey, so many people have backyard gardens. And in fact, New Jersey is known for its beefsteak tomatoes and sweet Jersey corn. New Jersey is one of the top producers of blueberries and cranberries in America. My state has 9,800 farms, covering 790,000 acres of farmland.
And it has more horses per capita than any other state in the United States. The U S Equestrian Team is headquartered in Gladstone, N.J.
New Jersey is also a state of many firsts. New Jersey was the first state to sign the Bill of Rights and the third to ratify the US Constitution.
The first boardwalk in the world was built in Atlantic City in 1870. And Atlantic City still boasts the longest boardwalk in the world. You known the Monopoly game? The blocks on the Monopoly board were named after the streets in Atlantic City. Now Atlantic City is pretty much known for casinos, thanks to Donald Trump.
The first seaside resorts opened in Cape May and Long Branch in the early
1800s and we've been riding merry go rounds and Ferris wheels and roller
coasters on our boardwalks ever since. New Jersey is also famous for
inventing salt water taffy. That was invented on our boardwalks in the early
1870s.
Speaking of inventions, the first phonograph was made by Thomas Edison in
Menlo Park, N.J., in 1877. In 1879, Edison invented the first light bulb. And
10 years later, he filmed the first movie. In the 1890s Hollywood was actually
located in Fort Lee, N.J, and all the films were produced there.

Princeton University is tied for first place with one other U.S. university as the
top-ranked college in the United States.
The first condensed soup in America was cooked and canned in Camden, N.J.

New Jersey is one of the smallest states in the United States. But it's also one
of the most densely populated states. 8.7 million people live in New Jersey.
Many immigrants crossed the Atlantic Ocean and settled in New Jersey, like
my grandparents, who sailed from Italy to Ellis Island in the early 1900s. Did
you know the Supreme Court ruled that while the Statue of Liberty stands in
the New York Harbor, the island it's located on is actually part of New Jersey?
Today, nearly half of all New Jerseyans are minorities and 19 percent are
foreign born.
With such a diverse population, it would figure that so many significant people
come from New Jersey.
Frank Sinatra came from Hoboken, Queen Latifah comes from Irvington, and
the Jonas Brothers were born in Wyckoff, N.J.
One more first: The first solid body electric guitar was invented by Les Paul in Mahwah in 1940. New Jersey is very rock 'n roll.
Jon Bon Jovi was born in Sayreville and Bruce Springsteen, of course, comes from Freehold, N.J. These two and lots of others got their start at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, N.J. With all these singers, it's a wonder New Jersey is the only state without an official song.
By the way, you know our Governor Chris Christie? He's also known as a rock star among governors.
New Jersey is also home to two presidents. President Grover Cleveland was born in Caldwell, N.J. President Woodrow Wilson was smart enough to move to New Jersey to become President of Princeton University and then our governor.
What's my favorite thing about New Jersey? It's one of only two states where self-service at gas stations is illegal. Jersey Girls don't pump gas.

The settlement of Deadwood began illegally in the 1870s on land which had been granted to American Indians in the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie. The treaty had guaranteed ownership of the Black Hills to the Lakota people and land disputes were endemic, having reached the United States Supreme Court on several occasions. However, in 1874, Colonel George Armstrong Custer led an expedition into the Black Hills and announced the discovery of gold on French Creek near present-day Custer, South Dakota. This announcement triggered the Black Hills Gold Rush and gave rise to the new and lawless town of Deadwood, which quickly reached a population of around 5,000.
In early 1876, frontiersman Charlie Utter and his brother Steve led a wagon train to Deadwood containing what were deemed to be needed commodities to bolster business. The gamblers and prostitutes resulted in the establishment of several profitable ventures. Madame Mustache and Dirty Em were on the wagon train and set up shop in what was referred to as Deadwood Gulch.[] Demand for women was high and the business of prostitution proved to have a good market. Madam Dora DuFran would eventually become the most profitable brothel owner in Deadwood, closely followed by Madam Mollie Johnson.
Deadwood became known for its lawlessness, during which time murder was common and punishment for murders not always fair and impartial. The town attained further notoriety for the murder of gunman Wild Bill Hickok on August 2, 1876. Mount Moriah Cemetery is the final resting place of Hickok and Calamity Jane, as well as slightly less notable figures such as Seth Bullock. Hickok's murderer, Jack McCall, was prosecuted twice, despite the U.S. Constitution's prohibition against double jeopardy, because of a ruling that Deadwood was an illegal town in Indian Territory and thus lacked the jurisdiction to prosecute or acquit McCall. This decision moved McCall's trial to a Dakota Territory court (Indian Court), where he was found guilty of murder and hanged.
As the economy changed from gold panning to deep mining, Deadwood lost its rough and rowdy character and developed into a prosperous town. Beginning August 12, a smallpox epidemic swept through, with so many falling ill that tents were erected to quarantine the stricken.
In 1876, General George Crook pursued the Sioux Indians from the Battle of Little Big Horn on an expedition that ended in Deadwood in early September and is known as the Horsemeat March. The same month, businessman Tom Miller opened the Bella Union Saloon.
A saloon called the Gem Variety Theater, opened on April 7, 1877 by Al Swearengen who also controlled the opium trade. The saloon was destroyed by a fire and rebuilt in 1879. It burned down again in 1899, causing Swearengen to leave the town.
The Homestake Mine in nearby Lead was established in October 1877. For years, it was the longest continuously operating gold mine in the United States. Gold mining operations ceased in 2002 but the mine is still open to tourists. On September 26, 1879, a fire devastated Deadwood, destroying more than three hundred buildings and consuming the belongings of many inhabitants. Many of the newly impoverished left town to start again.
Thomas Edison demonstrated the incandescent lamp in New Jersey in 1879. Judge Squire P. Romans took a gamble and founded the Pilcher Electric Light Company of Deadwood on September 17, 1883. He ordered an Edison dynamo, wiring and 15 incandescent lights with globes. After delays the equipment arrived without the globes. Romans had been advertising the event and decided to continue with the lighting, which was a success and the company grew. Deadwood had electricity less than four years after the invention, less than a year after commercial service was started in Roselle New Jersey and which was around the same time as much larger cities around the country.[]
A narrow-gauge railroad, the Deadwood Central Railroad, was founded by resident J.K.P. Miller and his associates in 1888, in order to serve their mining interests. The railroad was purchased by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1893. A portion of the railroad between Deadwood and Lead was electrified in 1902 for operation as an interurban passenger system, which operated until 1924. The railroad was abandoned in 1930, apart from a portion from Kirk to Fantail Junction, which was converted to standard gauge. The remaining section was abandoned by the successor Burlington Northern Railroad in 1984]
Some of the other early town residents and frequent visitors included Al Swearengen, E. B. Farnum, Charlie Utter, Sol Star, Martha Bullock, A. W. Merrick, Samuel Fields, Calamity Jane, Dr. Valentine McGillycuddy, the Reverend Henry Weston Smith, Aaron Dunn and Wild Bill Hickok.

Alfred Alistair Cooke KBE (20 November 1908 - 30 March 2004) was a British/American journalist, television personality and broadcaster.[1] Outside his journalistic output, which included Letter from America and Alistair Cooke's America, he was well known in the United States as the host of PBS Masterpiece Theater from 1971 to 1992. After holding the job for 22 years, and having worked in television for 42 years, Cooke retired in 1992, although he continued to present Letter from America until shortly before his death. He was the father of author and folk singer John Byrne Cooke.
Born in Salford, Lancashire, England, his father was a lay Methodist preacher and metalsmith by trade; his mother's family were of Irish Protestant origin. Originally named Alfred, he changed his name to Alistair when he was 22.
In 1937, Cooke moved to the United States, starting what was to become a permanent emigration.[citation needed] He became US citizen and swore the Oath of Allegiance on 1 December 1941, six days before Pearl Harbor was attacked. Shortly after emigrating, Cooke suggested to the BBC the idea of doing the London Letter in reverse: a 15-minute talk for British listeners on life in America. A prototype, Mainly About Manhattan, was broadcast intermittently from 1938, but the idea was shelved with the outbreak of World War II in 1939. During the war, he broadcast a weekly American Commentary on the BBC about the war.
During this time, as well, Cooke undertook a journey through the whole United States, recording the lifestyle of ordinary Americans during the war -- and their reactions to it. The manuscript did not arouse much interest immediately after the war, but it was discovered a few weeks before his death in 2004 and published as The American Home Front: 1941-1942 in the United States (and as Alistair Cooke's American Journey: Life on the Home Front in the Second World War in the UK) in 2006. Accompanied by strong reviews, it stands as the only incisive first-hand journal of the American home front ever published, even though the account is confined to the early stages of the war.
The first American Letter was broadcast on March 24, 1946 (Cooke said this was at the request of Lindsey Wellington, BBC's New York Controller); the series was initially commissoned for only 13 instalments. The series finally came to an end 58 years (2,869 installments) later, in March 2004. Along the way, it picked up a new name (changing from American Letter to Letter from America in 1950) and an enormous audience, being broadcast not only in Britain and in many other Commonwealth countries, but throughout the world by the BBC World Service. The original scripts are held at the BBC and at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center of Boston University.
In 1968, he was only yards away from Robert F. Kennedy when he was assassinated, witnessing the events that followed.
Later the same year, Cooke was awarded an honorary knighthood (KBE) for his outstanding contribution to Anglo-American mutual understanding. Cooke was reportedly happy to accept because in the words of Thomas Jefferson, it did not involve the very great vanity of a title.[8] Having relinquished his British citizenship during World War II, he could not be called Sir Alistair. For more than 50 years, Cooke lived in a rent-controlled apartment in Manhattan, New York City, outliving several property owners and all fellow tenants.
On March 2, 2004, at the age of 95, following advice from his doctors, Cooke announced his retirement from Letter from America — after 58 years, the longest-running speech radio show in the world.
Cooke died at midnight on March 30, 2004, at his home in New York City. He had been ill with heart disease, but died of lung cancer, which had spread to his bones.He was cremated, and his ashes were clandestinely scattered by his family in Central Park.
On December 22, 2005, the New York Daily News reported that the bones of Cooke and many other people had been surgically removed before cremation by employees of Biomedical Tissue Services of Fort Lee, New Jersey, a tissue-recovery firm.The thieves allegedly sold the bones for use as medical-grade bone grafts.The cancer from which Cooke was suffering had spread to his bones, making them unsuitable for grafts. Reports indicated[13] the people involved in selling the bones altered his death certificate to hide the cause of death and reduce his age from 95 to 85. Michael Mastromarino, a former New Jersey--based oral surgeon, and Lee Cruceta agreed to a deal that resulted in their imprisonment. Mastromarino was sentenced on June 27, 2008, in the Supreme Court in Brooklyn to 18 to 54 years' imprisonment.The entire story of the theft featured in a documentary aimed at educating the public about modern day grave robbery.[

Arlington is an urban county in Virginia, directly across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. With a population of 210,000, yet a land area of only about 26 square miles, Arlington is one of America's mostly densely populated jurisdictions. Despite its density, Arlington mixes the best of both big city and suburban environments. No incorporated towns or cities lie within Arlington County borders; all local government is at the county level. Arlington has grown with the DC area, even during nation-wide economic downturns. This is mostly due to the large number of employees of the federal government and its contractors.
Arlington is part of the original ten miles square which the US Constitution dedicated as Washington DC, the nation's capital. In 1846, as a result of issues relating to congressional representation, worries by Arlington residents that D.C would ban slavery, and an economic downturn as a result of the fact that Federal government offices were located on the northern side of the Potomac River, the U.S. Congress returned Arlington and Alexandra to Virginia. Most travelers to Arlington will visit both Washington, D.C. and Arlington, and the two cities are seamlessly linked together by the Metrorail system.
If you plan to stick to the urban areas, park your car and only travel by foot and public transport. Arlington has an excellent public transportation system, which includes 4 Metrorail lines, a public bikeshare program, as well 2 bus systems. Driving an automobile can bring more troubles than it is worth, as many of Arlington's attractions suffer from a dearth of parking spaces, and the area is notorious for expensive parking tickets.
Arlington County is located in northeast Virginia and is surrounded by Fairfax County and the Falls Church to the southwest, the City of Alexandria to the southeast, and Washington, D.C. to the northeast directly across the Potomac River, which forms the county's northern border. Other landforms also form county borders, particularly Minor's Hill and Upton's Hill on the west. Some of these urban village communities include:
