Putting the row in context: The far-right tide in the Netherlands
Turkey’s feud with the Netherlands continues to escalate. The dramatic row has seen the Netherlands deport a Turkish minister. Turkey in turn, responded with bold words, calling the Dutch Nazis. Undergraduate Field Trip to Amsterdam 2014
Student Louisa Smith filmed this fun video of her trip to Amsterdam which is part of our Level 2 Undergraduate Field Trip.
Students had the fantastic opportunity to work in a more hands-on way as part of their Urban Studies and Planning course by attending the European Urban Field Class. This module is comprised of a series of lecture sessions on topics ranging from transportation to urban policy, followed by a four day city visit. This year’s students visited the Netherlands, the field trip is fully funded by our Department.
This module is comprised of a series of lecture sessions on topics ranging from transporation to urban policy.
Students are given the opportunity to explore the urban environment in depth, with walking tours focusing on design, spatial structure and new architecture. Students are particularly encouraged to apply their academic knowledge to their understanding of how things work in this context and to reflect on how this may differ from things at home.

How the Dutch Controlled Indonesia (1816 – 1942) – A History of the Dutch East Indies
In this you you will learn about how the Dutch controlled Indonesia. The Dutch East Indies was the major part of the Dutch colonial empire. From 1602 there was the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, a.k.a. the VOC) which claimed many overseas territories like the Dutch Gold Coast, Dutch South Africa and Dutch Ceylon. In 1799 the VOC went bankrupt. After the Napoleonic Wars and the British Invasion of Java (1811) the Dutch state took over its overseas possessions. From 1816 the Dutch East Indies was declared. The Dutch implemented indirect rule to govern the Dutch East Indies. Also the cultivation system (cultuurstelsel) was applied which came down to ruthless exploitation of Javanese farmers. Later this system was replaced. Over the course of the 19th century the Dutch undertook many bloody colonial wars to pacify the Indonesian archipelago. Examples were the Java War (1825–1830) and the Bali Wars (1846, 1849, 1858, 1868, 1906 – 1908). The Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (Koninklijk Nederlands Indisch Leger, a.k.a. KNIL) fought its most brutal war in the nothern tip of Sumatra. The Aceh War (1973 – 1914) lasted for several decades and left many dead. From 1900 the Dutch implemented the ethical policy (ethische politiek) to improve the welfare of the local population. In 1942 the Japanese conquest of the Dutch East Indies took place. Indonesia during WW II was under Japanese occupation. After Japan surrendered the Indonesian War of Independence (Politionele Acties) started. Indonesia became independent in 1949, although the Indonesians had declared themselves independent in 1945.

Vondelpark - Amsterdam People Watching
Vondelpark is the go-to place for Amsterdam locals when the sun is shining. It's the perfect place for a jog, a bike ride, walking the dog or just to relax and people watch. It's also very popular to take your bike, find a spot of green and soak up a little sun. The park also has many peaceful areas with ponds, lakes, fountains and a rose garden. When you get hungry or thirsty, you can head to one of the park's 3 cafe restaurants: Blauwe Theehuis, Groot Melkhuis or Vondelpark 3. There is also a fourth, Vondeltuin on the far western entrance of the park, but its hours vary.

Sharing Bread in Amsterdam
Commoning the bread: Antoine Guay
Commoning the bread proposes to turn a dumpster into a communal bread oven. It aims to explore the potentialities of resistance through a creative alternative by disrupting the urban context.
The urban context affects collective organizations and common interests by promoting individual ways of living. Cities like Amsterdam are the main players within this logic of transformation and show it in their urban landscapes. Within these, construction dumpsters become the markers of this shift.

Netherlands: Controversial Third Reich exhibition to open in Dutch museum
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
The controversial exhibition, which is claimed to be the first major retrospective of design of the Third Reich is about to open in the Dutch city of 's-Hertogenbosch.
The retrospective, that will mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the town and its surrounding areas, received mixed reactions.
I understand the worries and I have had much myself as well when I was working on this exhibition, explained Thomas van den Heuvel, manager of the project.
But at the same time, I think it's important to show it in its context. We're starting with the terror of the concentration camps, we're ending with the holocaust, so we are putting that into context, he explained.
The exhibition puts on display a large selection of objects, including flags, posters, statues, furniture pieces and magazines.
Van den Heuvel also mentioned the Free Corps helmet with a swastika that they borrowed from the German Historical Museum with a little bit of negotiation.
The 'Design of the Third Reich' exhibition will be open for visitors from September 8 , 2019 until January 19, 2020.
