WEBISODE | Enchilada Gardener | New Mexico PBS
- At the beginning of the summer, I wanted to know more about local farmers' markets. I talked with folks at the New Mexico Farmers' Marketing Association, and they put me in touch with the organizers of the Corrales Growers' Market, Al and Bonnie Gonzales. They, in turn, introduced me to Mike Wheelock.
Mike has an ordinary home in an ordinary subdivision just outside the Corrales village limits. He's converted every inch of his backyard to garden. He's employed the enchilada method, also known as the lasagna method, in which he layers soaker hoses, builders' paper and compost -- just like a flat enchilada! He says this has saved him from watering and battling the weeds. In fact, before using this method, which was suggested by a friend, he had almost given up his hobby of gardening out of frustration.
Now, his hobby helps pay for the mortgage on his house and his adult daughters' education at the University of New Mexico.
I truly thank the New Mexico Farmers' Marketing Association, the Gonzales family, the Wheelock Family and the Squash Blossom Boys (who provided the soundtrack for my video by allowing me to tape their live performance at the market).
Tour de Vino

The roadkill at mark 1:16 was a wild boar. Poor pig.

Voices From the Farm: New Mexico
The Colorado River runs through seven states, nourishes nearly four million acres of farmland, and has flowed for more than six million years. Gloria {+} Bret, Historic Mesilla Plaza, New Mexico by Luminance Wedding Films
How do you create a wedding film without actually shooting the wedding? Very carefully. Despite the last minute change in plans, after finding out the church did not allow videotaping of the wedding ceremony but just audio recording, Bret and Gloria were determined to not let that ruin their day. They put complete trust in us that we would make it all work in the final edit. And I do believe we pulled it off! Highlighting the beautiful 10-piece choir in this film, a few words from their priest and using their special vows, this wedding was rich in catholic traditions. Bret and Gloria are two of the sweetest people you will ever meet. I wanted this film to showcase their fondness for each other through the music during the vows and the intimate silhouette shots of them together. We had an amazing time with this couple, their friends and their family. One of our first trips to Mesilla but not our last! Such a charming town for a charming couple! We wish you two all the best!

Santa Ynez Ranch and Potential Vineyard - 503 Acres
Located within the eastern border of the new Santa Rita Hills Appellation, this 503 acre ranch estate has tremendous potential as a Vineyard or winery. It has been used as a horse and cattle operation and has extensive support structures for that purpose. However, the property has the makings of a prestigious winery in one of the state's best regions for Pinot Noir.

NM True TV - Mesilla Valley Wineries
The nation's oldest wineries are in the history and culture laden Mesilla Valley of southern New Mexico. Michael and the True TV Crew take on the burden of touring those wineries and tasting those wines. It was no doubt a tough assignment, but you too can follow their tracks on this celebration of the grape.
NMSU Offers Wine Making Class
We are traveling through a vineyard in a golf cart with New Mexico State University Viticulture specialist, Bern Maier who is making one of his many trips out to check on the grapes that are almost ready to be harvested.
Low humidity and birds can do much damage to the grapes, so the vineyard requires much attention. After inspecting, and tasting some of the grapes Maier knows that within a week harvest will begin, just in time for the start of a wine making course offered by the university.
Students will have the opportunity to learn about the industry beginning from the grape to putting together a small business plan.
We will talk about what it takes to really run a winery. What it takes as far as investment costs and marketing plan, said Maier.
After harvesting the grapes, students will learn about the post-harvest process of making wine that begins in this fermentation lab.
(Pointing to jugs of fermenting wine)
In this case we are looking at a Sauvignon Blanc and it almost clears after the fermentation, says Maier.
Maier himself comes from a family that for generations has grown wine in Germany. He arrived in New Mexico in 1983 to help grow grapes and set up vineyards around the state, and he hopes to share his knowledge and experience to eager learners.
We fill the class up just about every year. We will try to not enroll more than twenty-five people. Twenty-five gives us the opportunity to do lab work in two groups, twelve to thirteen each, and it also gives the student the opportunity to get hands on work, says Maier.
The class will take some field trips to local wineries. However, most of the work will be done in the field preparing the product, and of course at the end of the semester students may even have some time for product evaluation.
