Camp LIA: Summer Adventure in Moab
Sixteen urban Latino high school students from Utah kicked off their summer vacation with an unforgettable Take It Outside! weekend adventure on the Colorado River near Moab.
The students slept out under the stars, braved high water runoff, and crushed Class I-II rapids on an overnight river raft trip provided by BLM-Utah, in partnership with Latinos In Action (LIA) and O.A.R.S. Canyonlands, Inc.
Mentors from LIA, the BLM, U.S. Forest Service, and Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks shared their insights about education paths and careers in natural resources. The O.A.R.S. river guides demonstrated the value of respecting the environment, looking out for each other, and how to take care of themselves outdoors. Five students from Logan High School were honored with internships to participate as peer leaders.
The students—many of whom had never been camping before-- became fast friends as they shared an action-packed, multi-day outdoor experience. The participants camped and hiked on public lands managed by the BLM-Utah's Moab Field Office; exploring red rock canyons, discovering desert wildlife, and even studying dinosaur tracks.
The learning and fun will continue throughout the summer with Camp LIA day trips to recreation areas in northern Utah, thanks to a partnership with outdoor leadership school Splore. Recreational opportunities include paddle boarding and rock climbing.
All this comes about from cooperation among a team of incredible partners: Latinos In Action; O.A.R.S. Canyonlands, Inc.; Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks; National Park Service, Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program; The Outdoor Foundation; Utah State University; US Forest Service Uintah-Wasatch-Cache; Bureau of Reclamation Upper Colorado Region, and Splore.

Canyonlands National Park: The Most Terrifying Drive of my Life! (Ep. 19)
Dec. 18, 2016: I made it! I'm here at Canyonlands National Park just outside Moab, Utah and the best part is that there's no hazardous weather to shut down the park!
I started the morning with sunrise photography at Dead Horse Point State Park before heading to Canyonlands. From there I visited Mesa Arch, Green River Overlook, Upheaval Dome, Grand View Point Overlook, & Buck Canyon Overlook. Those were all trumped by my drive down the Shafer Trail to Musselman Arch!
It's an unpaved road taking you down into the canyon below! 4x4 and nerves of steel are the only requirements - it's not for the faint of heart!
Tomorrow, we go to Arches National Park!

Corona Arch (The One With The Rope Swing) - Hiking in Moab Utah
Hiking to Corona Arch in Moab Utah
Moab is known for it's arches, most of which are contained within Arches National Park. If you are looking to hike to a slightly lesser known, but equally as big and beautiful arch look no further than Corona Arch. This arch is on BLM land and is completely free to visit as opposed to the arches in Arches National Park. Also since it is on BLM Land, it is pet friendly (Just be sure to practice pack it in pack it out and leave no trace practices to keep it that way). It's a mile and a half in and mile and a half out with only 600ft of elevation gain. There are plenty of people on the trail, but it is MUCH less crowded than any of the arches in the National Park. Have you been? Drop us a comment on how it was! Have a different favorite arch? Let us know in the comments below.
Colorado river gorge camp
this is our campsite on BLM land in the Colorado river gorge. The next day, we were asked to leave by a park ranger due to the US government shut down and the closure of all National campgrounds.
Canyon De Chelly - A incredible day trip from Bluff, Utah

Coyote Hunting in Utah: New Bounty Program Has Hunters Excited
Science Friday: Utah Dino Bones, Salt Lake Migrations, Tree Canopies - Part 1
If you stood in southeastern Utah over 200 million years ago, you’d be overlooking the ocean. The landlocked state wasn’t quite the same landscape of scarlet plateaus and canyons you might see today, but a coastal desert where sand dunes butted up right against the sea. And it was home to some of the earliest dinosaurs. In this region of Utah, today known as Indian Creek in Bears Ears National Monument, the remains of dinosaur relatives, known as protodinosaurs or “dinosaur aunts and uncles,” are buried in the Earth. Their bones tell the stories about the dawn of dinosaurs, prehistoric Utah, and a much warmer Earth. In the northern reaches of Utah’s Great Salt Lake sits Gunnison Island, a narrow strip of land just a mile long and half a mile wide. Despite its small size, the island hosts the world’s second largest white pelican rookery, with an average of 20,000 birds and 6,000 nests. Biologist Jaimi Butler of Westminster College’s Great Salt Lake Institute calls the birds the “polar bears” of Great Salt Lake—because as lake waters drop, the birds’ island refuge is now threatened by humans, coyotes, and other predators. Butler and her team have installed cameras on the island, and citizen scientists can now use these “PELIcam” images to help Butler and her colleagues catalog the white pelican population on the island—and the appearance of predators, too. Forest ecologist Nalini Nadkarni pioneered the exploration of tree canopies—the “new frontiers” of the forest, using hot air balloons, rock climbing gear, and cranes. There, high in the trees, she found soil coating the branches, much like the soil on the forest floor—and unique adaptations, like the water-gathering abilities of spiky bromeliads. In this segment, recorded live at the Eccles Theater in Salt Lake City, Nadkarni takes Ira on a tour of the forest canopy, talks about how fashion can be a tool for science communication, and describes her work communicating science to underserved populations, like inmates in prisons around the nation—from minimum security to Supermax.

Our 3 day camping trip to the Capitol Reef National Park area. We primitive camped on BLM land (Bureau of Land Management) to the east of the park itself. Our campsite was on a ridge with valleys on either side with panoramic views of Utah's beauty. At night we were serenaded by coyotes. The weather was perfect.

Canyonlands N.P.
Memories to the National Park Canyonlands.
The background music is a piece of mine. It's called Winds of Arches National Park, which I composed 5 years ago as I visited Moab and the Arches N.P.
Since these two national Parks are so close to each other I think the music fits here too.
