Blue Grotto, Capri, Italy - Relaxing boat tour. Grotto Azzurra
The Blue Grotto (Grotto Azzura in Italian) is Capri’s jewel in the crown. This legendary sea cave was once the Roman Emperor Tiberius’ private swimming pool. Bathed in an ethereal blue light it is your must see place to visit on the island.
Thinking of visiting the Grotto on a visit to Capri to see the natural phenomenon for yourself or just fancy watching a tranquil, relaxing boat ride, whichever I hope you enjoy the film.
How to get there: The Grotto is located on the north west coast of the island. If you don’t have a car you can either take a boat from Marina Grande or travel there by bus.
A boat tour from Marina Grande will cost you about 26 euros, comprising the trip to the cave, the rowing boat that takes you into the cave and your entrance fee. Allow about an hour and a half. At peak times there can be quite a line to enter the cave. There are various boat tours including a tour around the island.
Alternatively you can travel there by bus. Buses run from the port Marina Grande to Capri or Anacapri. The bus from Marina Grande to Anacapri takes about 20 minutes and 15 minutes from there to the Grotto. Or why not take the funicular up to Capri and catch the bus from there. The ticket office is to the right as you get off the ferry. A day pass “unico Capri” costs 6.90 euros and covers all your island travel except the Monte Solaro cable car. Take the bus to Anacapri, change then take the bus to the Blue Grotto, you can’t miss it as it is the last stop. Walk down the stairs and wait for your rowing boat. If you travel by bus you wont have to hang around waiting for the rest of your party to go into the grotto.
Once you have enjoyed the grotto take some refreshments at the kiosk up above the grotto before taking the bus back to Capri or Anacapri to carry on your sightseeing.
Tips:
Best light is apparently noon until 2pm. Queues reduce after 3pm but the sea can get rougher and sometimes is too rough to enter. Go early to avoid the lines.
You will need to climb into a row boat. Each rowing boat only holds 3 passengers and the oarsman. You buy your entrance ticket at a floating ticket office first, no credit cards accepted so have enough cash. Be prepared to enter the cave you will need to lie down flat in the boat, the boatman will then pull the boat into the narrow opening of the cave with a chain. It’s a tight squeeze.
The rowing boat costs 13 euros each, which includes the 4 euro entrance fee and don’t forget to tip your guide, be prepared for 5 – 10 euros, it will make him happy.
Money saving tip:
Entrance to the Grotto is free on the first Sunday of every month.
The History Bit:
The cave was discovered by the Romans and used by Emperor Tiberius’ as a private bathing pool and temple. A number of statues have been found in the cave and some are still believed to be lying at the bottom of the cave. The cave became abandoned as locals feared it was inhabited by spirits until it was rediscovered in 1826 and popularised by the writer August Lopisch and painter Ernst Fries.
The Science Bit:
Why does the water inside the cave appear to be bathed in an ethereal blue light?
There are actually two entrance holes into the cave, one directly below the other. The small top hole is the boat entrance to the cave. The lower hole is below the line of the water allows light into the cave which lights up the bottom of the cave, but filters out all but the blue light giving the water it’s brilliant emerald blue colour.
Thank you for watching my film, if you enjoyed it then please feel free to like it and leave a comment. Why don’t you have a look at some of the other films on my channel.

Check out this luxury suite at the freshly reopened Hotel Eden Rome
After an extensive 18-month renovation and total re-creation, the Hotel Eden ( has reopened. The luxury hotel, part of the Dorchester Collection, now has luxurious accommodations, dining and amenities (including a spa!) to match its perfect location in the heart of Rome. The hotel sits near the Villa Borghese, a few steps from Via Veneto and the Spanish Steps.
Here's a tour of one of the luxury hotel's Classic Suites. I was impressed by the size (the hotel reduced its room count by 30% in the renovation to create larger spaces) and the details. The fit and finish was just flawless. The spa-like bathroom includes some of the most beautiful marble and marble fabrication I've ever seen in a hotel room.

✓✓ Inside the Roman Colosseum !! ✓✓
The Colosseum or Coliseum (/kɒləˈsiːəm/ kol-ə-see-əm), also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre (Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium; Italian: Anfiteatro Flavio [amfiteˈaːtro ˈflaːvjo] or Colosseo [kolosˈsɛːo]), is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of concrete and sand, it is the largest amphitheatre ever built. The Colosseum is situated just east of the Roman Forum. Construction began under the emperor Vespasian in AD 72, and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir Titus. Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian (81–96). These three emperors are known as the Flavian dynasty, and the amphitheatre was named in Latin for its association with their family name (Flavius).
The Colosseum could hold, it is estimated, between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators, having an average audience of some 65,000; it was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.
Although partially ruined because of damage caused by earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is still an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome. It is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions and has also links to the Roman Catholic Church, as each Good Friday the Pope leads a torchlit Way of the Cross procession that starts in the area around the Colosseum. The Colosseum is also depicted on the Italian version of the five-cent euro coin.
The Colosseum's original Latin name was Amphitheatrum Flavium, often anglicized as the Flavian Amphitheater. The building was constructed by emperors of the Flavian dynasty, following the reign of Nero. The amphitheatre was actually built to replace a private lake that Nero had ordered built for him. This name is still used in modern English, but generally the structure is better known as the Colosseum. In antiquity, Romans may have referred to the Colosseum by the unofficial name Amphitheatrum Caesareum (with Caesareum an adjective pertaining to the title Caesar), but this name may have been strictly poetic as it was not exclusive to the Colosseum; Vespasian and Titus, builders of the Colosseum, also constructed an amphitheater of the same name in Puteoli (modern Pozzuoli).
The name Colosseum has long been believed to be derived from a colossal statue of Nero nearby (the statue of Nero was named after the Colossus of Rhodes. This statue was later remodeled by Nero's successors into the likeness of Helios (Sol) or Apollo, the sun god, by adding the appropriate solar crown. Nero's head was also replaced several times with the heads of succeeding emperors. Despite its pagan links, the statue remained standing well into the medieval era and was credited with magical powers. It came to be seen as an iconic symbol of the permanence of Rome, the ‘Eternal City’.
In the 8th century, a famous epigram attributed to the Venerable Bede celebrated the symbolic significance of the statue in a prophecy that is variously quoted: Quamdiu stat Colisæus, stat et Roma; quando cadet colisæus, cadet et Roma; quando cadet Roma, cadet et mundus (as long as the Colossus stands, so shall Rome; when the Colossus falls, Rome shall fall; when Rome falls, so falls the world). This is often mistranslated to refer to the Colosseum rather than the Colossus (as in, for instance, Byron's poem Childe Harold's Pilgrimage). However, at the time that the Pseudo-Bede wrote, the masculine noun coliseus was applied to the statue rather than to what was still known as the Flavian amphitheatre.
The Colossus did eventually fall, possibly being pulled down to reuse its bronze. By the year 1000 the name Colosseum had been coined to refer to the amphitheatre. The statue itself was largely forgotten and only its base survives, situated between the Colosseum and the nearby Temple of Venus and Roma.
The name further evolved to Coliseum during the Middle Ages. In Italy, the amphitheatre is still known as il Colosseo, and other Romance languages have come to use similar forms such as Coloseumul (Romanian), le Colisée (French), el Coliseo (Spanish) and o Coliseu (Portuguese).
