De Hallen Haarlem was staging a major exhibition about the sky in Dutch art since 1850. The museum showed a wide range of interpretations of the sky: from late Romantic artists like Schelfhout, by way of Impressionists like Weissenbruch and Mesdag, to contemporary artists like Robert Zandvliet and Guido van der Werve. Some 150 paintings, sculptures, photographs and films showed how inspiring the sky was and still is as a subject for artists.

Frans Hals (Anvers ?, entre 1580 et 15831 -- Haarlem, 26 août 1666) est un peintre baroque néerlandais (Provinces-Unies), considéré, avec Rembrandt et Johannes Vermeer, comme l'un des plus importants du siècle d'or.
Bien que sans doute d'origine flamande, c'est dans la ville hollandaise de Haarlem qu'à partir de 1591 au plus tard, il passe le reste de sa vie et fait carrière.
Artiste majeur, considéré comme l'un des grands maîtres du portrait, il a également réalisé, surtout au début de sa carrière, plusieurs scènes de genre.
Ses tableaux se distinguent par leur expressivité. Les coups de pinceau détachés sont caractéristiques de sa manière, et il participa à l'introduction de cette vivacité de style dans l'art néerlandais. Hals contribua aussi, avec ses portraits de garde civile et de régents, à l'évolution du portrait de groupe au xviie siècle.
Son style devait par ailleurs exercer une influence considérable, plus de deux siècles après lui, sur les représentants des courants réaliste -- comme Gustave Courbet --, et impressionniste -- comme Van Gogh, Monet et Manet.

Analyzing Museum Rhetoric - Leiden University
What do 17th Century still-life paintings tell us about colonial and trade relations in the Dutch Golden Age? The exhibition, A Global Table, compares historical and contemporary artworks in a joint exhibition by the Frans Hals Museum and De Hallen Museum. This video will analyze the three main strategies of classical rhetoric used for the framework of this exhibition and demonstrate their effectiveness.
“What is the political and cultural significance of food? What are the effects of past colonial relations on the world trade in food and the distribution of wealth?” A Global Table, a joint exhibition between De Hallen Haarlem and Frans Hals Museum (Haarlem, NL) curated by Abigail Winograd (Israël, 1983), juxtaposes a collective of contemporary works, featured in De Hallen, and Dutch Golden Age paintings of the Frans Hals Museum. Under the theme A Global Table, these works can be seen as historical documents charting the growth of economic power and colonial expansion of the Republic and the Dutch contribution to the creation of the world economy.
