Del Norte Redwoods State Park
What started as 157-acres of old growth redwoods in 1925 has expanded into what is today a 31,000-acre State Park. Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park hosts a stretch of the California Coastal Trail that provides a vital access to this remote park, with eight miles of the trail that traverse sea-side bluffs above these ancient old growth redwoods. You could be looking at a tree, genetically, that is from the time of the dinosaurs, enthuses Brett Silver of the California State Parks. It's just one breathtaking element of this state park's redwood grove that, according to Silver, is almost like you're in a different world.

Mill Creek Campground - a quick tour. Yoly and I spent one night in this beautiful State Park. Due to the extreme drought, Mill Creek was dry as a bone. It would have been nice to hear the babbling water during the quiet night time hours. The Park Rangers at the gate were especially helpful in showing us a really cool scenic road through some of the old growth forest in Jedadiah Redwoods State Park nearby (see separate video to follow).

Mill Creek Campground in Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park south of Crescent City California provides primitive tent and RV camping 2 miles down a paved road off US 101. The down is notable for folks who are bike touring the coast. This is a long and steep road!
Each of the campground's 145 campsites has a picnic table, food locker and fire ring. The campground is open from May through September. Situated in a second growth Redwood forest the name should say it... used to be a lumber area for the early days when chopping down thousand year old trees was fun. Numerous stumps stand around the campground as ghosts of a bygone era.
Running water and showers available at 4 restrooms situated throughout the campground. Fresh water is available near the dump station.
Suitable for RVs up to 31' and trailers up to 27' these lengths are important because the camp roads meander through large trees that will be unforgiving if you try to squeeze around. Mill Creek Campground suffers from budget neglect and shows signs of wear. Best suited to tent and small RV camping.
Multiple trails meander through the woods around the campground. A creek (Mill Creek) passes through the campground.
Paved roads with either paved or gravel parking pads. No supplies or groceries come prepared for your needs.

Camping Trip 2011 Part 7, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, CA
Great Campgrounds, hot showers and flushing toilets. Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park is in Northern California by Crescent City. But no redwoods in the camping area on mill creek, but the stumps are just as great, and teach an important lessen about the Redwood forest.

Some shots through the forest on the California Northern coast. I largely skipped the national park in favor of some more remote hikes through some of the remaining old growth redwoods. Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park is a great place to hike off of the more heavily beaten path.

Panther Flat Campground & Jedediah State Park, Northern California (more redwoods)
We have a relaxing few days camping by the Smith River at the tranquil Panther Flat Campground in Northern California near the Redwoods National and State Parks.
We take a scenic drive through Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, discover the awesome SeaQuake Brewing at Crescent City, and learn how to cross a river in five ways near our campsite. It was flowing quickly and we could not get across it to the beach on the other side without a series of mishaps. Swimming and cliff jumping was our reward once we did,

Kelsey M.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Pricey but Gorgeous
After climbing up, up, up along the coast, the Mill Creek access road takes you twisting down into a valley among the trees.
Upon arrival the rangers assigned me a campsite but worked hard to figure out which is the available sites best suit my needs. We settled on a site along an out of the way loop. On a Thursday night mid-September there were many open campsites and the campground was pretty quiet. It was incredible just to wander around the campground and wonder at the trees. Mill Creek is in a second generation forest. The old growth trees had been cut for logging years ago but their awe-inspiring stumps are scattered throughout the campground. The trees that grow today are impressive in their own way.
Roughly 20 minutes from Crescent City, there's relatively quick access to the beach and coastline. Check out the Battery Point Lighthouse which can only be accessed at low tide. The campground has flushing toilets, drinking water, and pay showers. There are also fire pits, picnic tables, and large bear lockers in each campsite. The roads down to the campground and throughout are a little rough, keep an eye out for big dumps and dips. The campground hosts sell firewood and have quarters for the showers and are incredibly friendly. I loved staying at Mill Creek and had a wonderful experience yet, $35 dollars a night feels a little pricey.
