Green Lakes Hike - Deschutes National Forest, Bend Oregon - CH Action Adventures
I've been hiking throughout the Great Northwest for years. The Green Lakes Trail is very special, and probably my favorite. This particular hike has everything a person who loves the outdoors could want. Mountains, cascading waterfalls, flowing streams, pristine lakes, abundant wildlife, wildflowers, and an incredible forest. About two thirds into this video I was fortunate to capture photos of a hummingbird, which unexpectantly came into camera view while I was snapping pictures of paintbrush, pretty incredible. Mid July is a great time to do this hike as the wildflowers are peaking, and water levels from snow runoff are still decent, which this video illustrates very well. This beautiful hike is about 11 miles round trip with a cumulative elevation gain of 1,187'. Insect repellent is a must during the months of July and August, as the mosquitos are very active. I'd highly recommend this hike to outdoor enthusiasts.

This drive is divided into two parts. First, you'll see a bit of US 97 south of Bend, before turning off to the Lava Cast Forest in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The second clip picks up the drive on US 97 again, at the turnoff to Lava Cast Forest, and then continues north, into and through Bend, and out to Tumalo Falls.

The Deschutes National Forest is a United States National Forest located in parts of Deschutes, Klamath, Lake, and Jefferson counties in central Oregon. It comprises 1.8 million acres (7,300 km2) along the east side of the Cascade Range. In 1908, the Deschutes National Forest was established from parts of the Blue Mountains, Cascade, and Fremont National Forests.
In 1911, parts of the Deschutes National Forest were split off to form the Ochoco and Paulina National Forests, and parts of the Cascade and Oregon National Forests were added to the Deschutes. In 1915, the lands of the Paulina National Forest were rejoined to the Deschutes National Forest. A 1993 Forest Service study estimated that the extent of old growth in the forest was 348,100 acres (140,900 ha). Within the boundaries of the Deschutes National Forest is the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, containing cinder cones, lava flows, and lava tubes. The Deschutes National Forest as a whole contains in excess of 250 known caves.
The forest also contains five wilderness areas, six National Wild and Scenic Rivers, the Oregon Cascade Recreation Area, and the Metolius Conservation Area. Forest headquarters are located in Bend, Oregon. There are local ranger district offices in Bend, Crescent, and Sisters.Recreational activities in Deschutes National Forest include boating, fishing, wildlife watching, and hiking, as well as mountain biking on an extensive system of trails. Hiking and skiing can be done on Mount Bachelor, a stratovolcano in the Cascade Range.
Lake Odell in Deschutes National Forest
Lake Odell is located near Willamette Pass in the northwest corner of Klamath County, Oregon, United States. It is one of several lakes in the Cascade Range in central Oregon, and lies within the Deschutes National Forest. Lake Odell is 3562 acres, 6 miles long and 1 1/2 miles wide, and reaches a depth of 282 ft. It fills a basin carved by a glacier, and the resulting terminal moraine confines the water along the lake's southeast shore. Lake Odell also offers beautiful campsites tucked away in thick forests and some excellent wind surfing. Boats are the most effective way to fish this lake but be aware of afternoon winds; the lake can get dangerously rough. It was named for William Holman Odell by B. J. Pengra in July 1865 while they were making a preliminary survey for the Oregon Central Military Road, which would later become Oregon Route 58.

Through cutting-edge technology and the efforts of more than 500 volunteers, Oregon Wild has identified unprotected natural areas in the Mount Hood National Forest over the past decade and sought federal Wilderness designation to preserve them.
In January 2009, Oregon Senators Ron Wyden (D) and Jeff Merkley (D) introduced legislation that would give Wilderness protection to 127,000 acres and designate 80 miles of rivers around Mount Hood and in the Columbia Gorge as Wild and Scenic Rivers.
The compromise plan includes the scenic canyons along White River, the biologically diverse forests of Fifteenmile Creek, the old-growth forest surrounding Roaring River and the beautiful whitewater of the East Fork of the Hood River.
The Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness is an important step toward preserving the scenic beauty, biodiversity, clean drinking water and unparalleled recreational opportunities for future generations of Oregonians.
Van Life - Hiking and Beer Tasting in Bend Oregon
Day 29-30 on the Road - Our first two days in Bend, OR were spent working in an awesome coffee shop called Crow's Feet Commons located downtown and right off the river. We scouted the Deschutes National Forest for some free sites to camp in, but the roads got worse the further we went....making Ryan realize that we're going to need a new 4WD van... We didn't find a great spot, but ended up grabbing a beer with friends from Becky's hometown, who had an extra parking spot at their house and kindly let us park in it for the night.
The next day, after work and a bit of exploring the downtown area, we trekked up to Tumalo Falls for a late afternoon hike in the mist to see some gorgeous waterfalls. It was a nice hike along the water, not too strenuous and plenty of view points.
After, we met up with friends at Crux Brewery, which was fantastic. You'd appreciate how much craft goes into everything there. We received some great education on their beer, how they got started, and the food was amazing. The cheeseboard had freakin' smoked grapes and a bacon, beer butter spread..everything was to die for. Outside they have fire pits, lawn games, bistro lights, and picnic tables...a great space for people to bring dogs and even for kids during the day. We loved it.
After socialized we went back to Tumalo State Park and shared a site with our friends the Javureks (@sprint2explore). We were stoked to have a site that would fit two Sprinter vans to help us save $$!

Tumalo Falls - Bend Oregon
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick, Regan, Maggie and Kate visited Tumalo Falls in the Cascade Mountains outside of Bend, Oregon. (We’re sorry if we mispronounced Tumalo in the video). The 89 foot high falls is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in the vicinity of Bend. You’ll find the falls at the end of a 2 1/2 mile gravel road in the Deschutes National Forest. You can get a great view of the falls right out of the parking lot, making it accessible to everyone. We totally recommend taking the short hike to the top of the falls. The view is fantastic and there are several viewpoints to stop at on your way up. If you look closely, you can find the narrow trail that leads through the forest and behind the falls. It’s crazy! Tumalo Creek merges with Bridge Creek as they head toward the Deschutes River, and the clear icy water is beautiful. The surrounding forest is still recovering from the Bridge Creek Fire in 1979, but the greenery, the wildflowers, and the forest create the perfect backdrop to the towering falls. The Tumalo Falls Day Use Area has picnic tables, restrooms, and is the trailhead to many hiking and biking trails. If you’re visiting Bend, Oregon, Tumalo Falls should definitely be on your list.

HIKING NEAR BEND OREGON
Bend Oregon was our destination this weekend. We boondocked (free camping in National Forest) for Friday night and hiked in The Cove Palisades next to Lake Billy Chinook. The trail name was Tam-a-lau Loop.
The wonderful shop we LOVED was Beyond The Ranch Antiques in Redmond Oregon, only 10 minutes before Bend.

This is a small Forest Service campground with a hand pump, out-houses, and a small concrete boat ramp. This is a good lake for small boats and rafts. It also has a shallow wading area for children near the boat ramp.
