Cycling Amsterdamsestraatweg (again), Utrecht (Netherlands)
Riding a bicycle from the edge of the city of Utrecht to the center on the former road from Amsterdam to Utrecht.
Because this was filmed on one of the grayest days of the year it makes this street look uglier than it really is. It runs through one of the most ethnically divers areas of the city and it has a cycle path that is generally very good. Especially once it gets smooth red asphalt. Even though this street into the center has countless side streets, the protected priority cycle track makes it very safe for a cyclist. This road is not part of the main cycle network but since it is a very quick route into the city, on average 13,970 cyclists still use this street every day. (Counted on a location closest to the center.)
The modern road from Amsterdam to Utrecht is a 10 lane motorway.
An earlier video about this street can be found here
That video shows the street from the other direction.

RMS Rhone Wreck dive British Virgin Islands pre-dive video 11/14/13 (1/3)
RMS Rhone was a Royal Mail Ship that carried cargo and passengers between England, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. She was powered by both sail and steam. Built in 1865 at the Millwall Iron Works on the Isle of Dogs, London, she was 310 feet (94 m) long, had a 40-foot (12 m) beam and two masts. Her propeller was the second bronze propeller ever built. Her maiden voyage was in August 1865 to Brazil, which was the destination of her next five voyages. There she proved her worth by weathering several severe storms. RMSP then switched her to the West Indies route. The Rhone was a favourite among passengers due to her then fast speed of 14 knots (26 km/h),[citation needed] and her lavish cabins. She had 253 first class, 30 second class and 30 third class cabins.
On 19 October 1867 Rhone drew alongside RMS Conway in Great Harbour, Peter Island to refuel. The original coaling station they needed had been moved from the then Danish island of St. Thomas due to an outbreak of yellow fever.
On the day of the sinking, the Rhone's Master, Robert F. Wooley, was slightly worried by the dropping barometer and darkening clouds, but because it was October and hurricane season was thought to be over, Rhone and Conway stayed in Great Harbour. The storm which subsequently hit was later known as the San Narciso Hurricane and retrospectively categorised as a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir--Simpson Hurricane Scale. The first half of the storm passed without much event or damage, but the ferocity of the storm worried the captains of the Conway and Rhone, as their anchors had dragged and they worried that when the storm came back after the eye of the storm had passed over, they would be driven onto the shore of Peter Island.
They decided to transfer the passengers from the Conway to the unsinkable Rhone; the Conway was then to head for Road Harbour and the Rhone would make for open sea. As was normal practice at the time, the passengers in the Rhone were tied into their beds to prevent them being injured in the stormy seas.
Conway got away before Rhone but was caught by the tail end of the storm, and foundered off the south side of Tortola with the loss of all hands. But Rhone struggled to get free as her anchor was caught fast. It was ordered to be cut loose, and lies in Great Harbour to this day, with its chain wrapped around the same coral head that trapped it a century and a half ago. Time was now critical, and Captain Wooley decided that it would be best to try to escape to the shelter of open sea by the easiest route, between Black Rock Point of Salt Island and Dead Chest Island. Between those two islands lay Blonde Rock, an underwater reef which was normally a safe depth of 25 feet (7.6 m), but during hurricane swells, there was a risk that the Rhone might founder on that. The Captain took a conservative course, giving Blonde Rock (which cannot be seen from the surface) a wide berth.
However, just as Rhone was passing Black Rock Point, less than 250 yards (230 m) from safety, the second half of the hurricane came around from the south. The winds shifted to the opposite direction and Rhone was thrown directly into Black Rock Point. It is said that the initial lurch of the crash sent Captain Wooley overboard, never to be seen again. Local legend says that his teaspoon can still be seen lodged into the wreck itself. Whether or not it is his, a teaspoon is clearly visible entrenched in the wreck's coral. The ship broke in two, and cold seawater made contact with her hot boilers which had been running at full steam, causing them to explode.
The ship sank swiftly, the bow section in 80 feet (24 m) of water, the stern in 30 feet (9 m). Of the 146 people originally aboard, plus an unknown number of passengers transferred from the Conway, only 23 (all crew) survived the wreck. The bodies of many of the sailors were buried in a nearby cemetery on Salt Island. Due to her mast sticking out of the water, and her shallow depth, she was deemed a hazard by the Royal Navy in the 1950s and her stern section was blown up.
The Rhone has received a number of citations and awards over the years as one of the top recreational wreck dives in the Caribbean, both for its historical interest and teeming marine life, and also because of the open and relatively safe nature of the wreckage. Very little of the wreckage is still enclosed, and where overhead environments do exist, they are large and roomy and have openings at either end permitting a swim through, so there is no real penetration diving for which divers usually undergo advanced training. Some divers consider the Rhone one of the best dive sites in world.
Wreck of RMS RhoneHer bow section is still relatively intact, and although the wooden decks have rotted away, she still provides an excellent swim-through for divers. Her entire iron hull is encrusted with coral and overrun by fishes (and the local barracuda
African migration from Europe to China - Docu - 2013
VPRO backlight portrays a group of Nigerian immigrants in the Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou.
The community is at the forefront of a major trend that will determine the economic and political development of the first half of the 21st century: the rate of emigration flows from low wage countries is shifting, from the old continent Europe to new economies in Asia.
Original title: Zwart geld: De toekomst komt uit Afrika
While Europe is increasingly becoming a fortress, and at the same time aging at a rapid rate, African emigrants choose to go East. This, according to experts, will have disastrous consequences for the European economy, and thus for the future of the European citizens.
VPRO backlight follows the daily life of 'new happiness seekers' in China and analyzes the importance of this development with philosopher and political scientist Achille Mbembe and Ian Goldin, former vice president of the World Bank, advisor to Nelson Mandela, now Professor of Globalization and Development at the Oxford University.
Their analysis shows that Europe should open the borders as soon as possible, if it wants to be able to sustain its development into the next century.

World First Adventure Tourism Pizza Delivery - by Bungy & Jetboat
In Britain they've delivered pizza by drone, and now a global pizza giant has gone to new lengths with its New Zealand customer service, delivering the first pizza ever by bungy to celebrate the Company's 600th store opening.
Domino's has opened its 600th store in Queenstown and to celebrate the milestone in the tourist capital, the company has achieved a world first -- a pizza delivered by bungy. Scott Bush, Domino's New Zealand General Manager says he couldn't think of a better way to mark the significant store opening than a bungy pizza delivery.
Queenstown is one of the world's premium adventure tourism capitals, so we wanted to mark the opening of the Queenstown store by doing something that paid homage to the region's daredevil ethos and reflect the Domino's brand in a way that was fun.
The adventurous delivery took place at the AJ Hackett Kawarau Bridge Bungy on December 10 and saw a Domino's pizza delivery worker take the plunge and deftly deliver a pizza to tourists waiting in a jetboat below.
Domino's Queenstown has now officially opened its doors, marking the milestone of the 600th Australasian store to be opened by Domino's.
Bush says the new store has been extremely well received by locals and tourists alike.
We're excited to offer both locals and travellers access to their favourite pizza brand every night of the week and people certainly seem excited to have us in the region -- the store has been humming, he says.
Domino's Pizza Enterprises Limited was Australia's first publicly-listed pizza company and is a master franchisor for the Domino's Pizza brand in Australia, New Zealand, France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Japan. Domino's and its franchisees have more than 1,200 stores across six countries, employing more than 21,000 part-time and full-time staff and making more than 60 million pizzas each year.

STORYLINE:
Hurricane Felix gathered strength early on Sunday and became a Category 2 hurricane, the US National Hurricane Centre said, adding it was forecast later in the day to pass just north of the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba.
The storm was upgraded from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday evening, becoming the second Atlantic hurricane of the season.
It had sustained maximum winds of about 100 miles per hour (160 kilometres per hour) early on Sunday.
A tropical storm warning and hurricane watch were in effect for Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.
At 0800 am EDT (1200 GMT), Felix was centered about 95 kilometres (60 miles)
northeast of Aruba and was moving northwest at about 30 kph (18 mph), the hurricane center said.
Felix has changed direction constantly since nightfall and is wobbling as it makes progress across the Caribbean, making its impact hard to predict, according to Curacao Lieutenant Governor Lizanne Richards-Dindial.
On Aruba all flights out of its main airport were stopped from 0600 local time (1000 GMT) on Sunday.
Felix, the sixth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, is expected to continue strengthening over the next 24 hours.
Forecasters are predicting it will steadily expand in size.
Along the Pacific coast of Mexico, meanwhile, authorities discontinued storm warnings on Saturday as Tropical Storm Henriette moved out to sea.
Henriette dumped heavy rain on the region and at least six people were killed.
A teenager and her two brothers died when a landslide slammed into their house in a poor neighbourhood of the resort city of Acapulco.
The rains also loosened a giant boulder that smashed into a home in Acapulco, killing an adult and two children and injuring two other people.
With maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometres per hour (70 miles per hour), the storm was expected to become a hurricane on Sunday.
But forecasters put it on a path that would not threaten land until Thursday, when it could hit a remote section of the Baja California peninsula.

MOST CHARMING CITY IN EUROPE? (BRUGES, BELGIUM TOUR) | Eileen Aldis
Bruges, Belgium might just be the most charming city in Europe. If you closed your eyes and imagined a picturesque, fairytale, travel-back-in-time, absolutely breath-taking European city I'd guess that Bruges is pretty close to what's in your head. It's what European vacation dreams are made of. A veritable time capsule of medieval architecture, It's easy to understand why it's a UNESCO World Heritage City. It is rare to see so many streets of buildings all so well preserved. Walking around is like being transported back in time and history here is on another level. This town hall? It was the seat of government for more than six hundred years. This old hospital? It's been a hospital since the 1100s (and only stopped in the 1970s). The reason why Bruges is so well preserved has a twist: the city was too poor to renovate and rebuild. Bruges has experienced periods of great wealth, great poverty, and great wealth. During the down times, citizens didn't have the cash to make 'improvements' to their houses and to this scarcity we owe a great deal! Ironically, the current citizens of Bruges benefit from their forebears' inability to knock things down and rebuild. Bruges is now a huge draw for tourists from around the world who flock to see the same buildings people were too poor to change. Huzzah! This is why I love history!
Our day in Bruges started at the Folklore Museum. It's only 4 Euro and you can get a nice overview of life in the city in the 19th and 20th centuries. Don't forget to look for the black cat who lives there. He's rare to see and is one of a long line of black cats who call the museum home. We then walked (you can walk everywhere) to the Burg Square where you'll find the Stadhuis (town hall) and a little further on is the Grote Markt. The latter is the main square where you'll find see the Belfry (Belfort) and dozens of tourists. Bruges is known for two things: an abundance of beauty and an abundance of tourists seeking it. But no one cares because you're so stunned at the charming city around you. We walked on to the Church of Our Lady where the altar piece is a Michelangelo sculpture of the Madonna and Child. Made of Carrara marble, it's been stolen twice and is now safe again to view at the church. Across the street is Sint-Janshospitaal - the one that was a hospital from the 1100s to the 1970s. Now you'll find religious art and - my favourite - examples of old ambulances. A visit here makes you really appreciate modern medicine. It started to rain and we were getting hungry so we headed to the Friet Museum (Fry Museum). How could we visit Belgium without doing a deep dive into the history of fries?! We wanted to find out why so many people mistakenly call them 'French fries' - we also wanted to eat fries. Check and check. It stopped raining so we ended the Bruges tour by boarding a river cruise because there are parts of the city only visible from the water. I'd definitely recommend a boat ride if you're visiting Bruges - it's relaxing and offers a unique perspective not seen by other means. We absolutely loved visiting Bruges and hope you enjoyed this visit to the jewel of Belgium.

WAR CRIME: Boeing 777 MH17 crash - Ukrainian fighters are responsible
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is upset that Russia’s “materials” on the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over Ukraine are considered either superficially or are totally ignored.
He said this after a meeting with his Dutch counterpart Stef Blok on Friday, Russian agency TASS reported. The hunt for those who brought down flight MH17 was the main issue discussed by the duo.
“Our facts, our remarks and our comments are not fully taken into account by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) and the materials transferred by us are considered either superficially or selectively or are simply ignored,” he was quoted as saying.
He was commenting on the probe into Flight MH17, a Boeing-777 passenger plane travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, which was shot down on July 17, 2014, over Ukraine’s eastern region of Donetsk.
All 298 people on board flight MH17 were killed when it was struck by a missile, causing the plane to crash into fields in eastern Ukraine. Two-thirds of the passengers on the flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur were Dutch. The Netherlands is leading the investigation.
DutchNews reported that the JIT’s preliminary investigations concluded last year that the plane was shot down from Ukrainian farmland by a BUK missile ‘controlled by pro-Russian fighters’. That conclusion has been disputed by Russia, which claims that Ukrainian fighters were responsible.
The investigation into the crash is being conducted by the JIT, comprising representatives of Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Ukraine.
According to TASS, Lavrov said Russia had answered all questions, without any exception, posed by the Dutch Prosecutor’s Office on this crash.
“We, indeed, rendered assistance to the investigation during its technical stage as well. We are continuing the assistance now that a criminal investigation is underway.”
He said there was a substantial volume of information, including primary unprocessed radar observation data on the air situation at the time of the Malaysian airliner’s crash.
“These data clearly indicate, which directions the missile could fly from and from which it could not,” Lavrov was quoted as saying by TASS.
He said in the data Russia had “clearly indicated” the missile did not come from the direction that it was said to have come. He complained that this evidence had not been accepted and Russia was told that two independent experts had stated, “after examining the data of our objective radar control that our radars had simply been unable to spot it because it flew quickly”.
He denied accusations that Russia was trying to lead the investigation astray.
He asked why the Dutch authorities had not asked why Ukraine did not close its airspace.
Lavrov said: “Not a single Ukrainian air controller who was on duty on that day was questioned and the investigators have not received the Ukrainian radar observation data.”
He urged investigators not to disregard any version of what happened. He said they should “not to try to fit all the available data into a version that is well known and was numerously mentioned in the media even before the investigation’s completion”.
TASS said in September 2016, international investigators published the results of their probe, claiming that the missile that brought down the plane was launched from a Buk air defense system near the town of Pervomaiskoye to the south of the settlement of Snezhnoye, which at that time was under the control of the eastern Ukrainian militias.
According to TASS, the Russian analysis of the primary radar’s data refutes the possibility of a missile launch targeting the Boeing from the area to the east of the crash scene, including from Snezhnoye.
DutchNews quoted Jirko Patist, spokesman for the Dutch prosecution service, as saying the type of radar used by the Russians filtered out high-speed objects and that the type of Buk missile implicated in the shooting down of MH17 flew three times as fast as a passenger jet.
Patist said the two experts had also discounted alternative scenarios put forward by Russia, such as the suggestion that MH17 could have been shot down by a fighter plane. No other aircraft was detected in the vicinity of the airliner at the time the missile was fired, they concluded.
Augusta Savage: A Woman of Her Word
Jeffreen M. Hayes, executive director, Threewalls
An outstanding sculptor associated with the intellectual and cultural awakening known as the Harlem Renaissance, Augusta Savage (1892-1962) overcame poverty, racism, and sexual discrimination in pursuit of her goals. Creating new visions of black identity in her work, she was also an activist, campaigning for equal rights for African Americans in the arts. The traveling exhibition Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman and its accompanying catalog is the first to reassess Savage’s contributions to art and cultural history in light of 21st-century attention to the concept of the artist-activist. The exhibition viewing dates are as follows: the Cummer Museum of Art, October 12, 2018-April 7, 2019; the New York Historical Society, May 3–July 28, 2019; the Palmer Museum of Art, Pennsylvania State University, August 24–December 8, 2019; and the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, January 19–March 22, 2020. The groundbreaking catalog features illustrations of more than 40 works by Savage, her students, and her contemporaries, archival letters, rarely seen photographs, and an extensive bibliography and essays by Kirsten Pai Buick, Bridget R. Cooks, and Howard Dodson. In celebration of the Washington, DC, book launch on June 23, 2019, exhibition organizer Jeffreen M. Hayes discusses the life, work, and lasting legacy of Savage as an artist and a community builder. This program was proposed and made possible by Darryl Atwell.

The smart university - VPRO documentary - 2016
A year after the students occupation of the Maagdenhuis in Amsterdam, it appears that there are enough ways to come up with a 'smart university'.
Last year students and staff of the University of Amsterdam occupied the Maagdenhuis and protested against the strongly increasing profit way of thinking. But little was said about how education and research should look in the future. After a much-discussed broadcast about the future of our primary and secondary education, VPRO Backlight this time is going deep into the developments of higher education. What should a future-proof university ideally look like? VPRO Backlight collected a number of inspiring examples.
In Amsterdam, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS) offers, among others, the Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Beta-Gamma and Future Planet Studies studies. The IIS designs new education for the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and combines several disciplines, because the world does not consist of defined courses or study programs.
At the Forensic Architecture project at Goldsmiths in London, they are no longer doing anything else. They work with NGOs on concrete research projects where architects, lawyers and journalists work together. For example, they present 3D animations showing that Israel has used excessive violence against civilians in the Gaza Strip. The UN has initiated an investigation on the basis of this animation.
In Silicon Valley, Daphne Koller, founder of Coursera, sketches a future for higher education as an online world market. Students from all over the world can take online courses from top universities such as Stanford, Yale or Princeton for nothing, or few, thanks to Massive Open Online Courses, also known as MOOCs. Does this mean a possible emancipation for people in developing countries who do not have the money to register at top universities? For the UvA participant, it is in any case a way to generate publicity, because you share a platform with these top universities. But can the MOOC replace the university?
In the Ruhr area we visit the first university in Germany with a 'Prorektorat für Diversity Management'. Rector Ulrich Radtke anticipates that German society will look very different in 20 years from now. He wants to make it possible for students with a working or migrant background to study. Through the active policy of his Universität Duisburg-Essen (UDE), doors are opened literally and figuratively for young people who never thought of themselves that they would ever be able to study. He questions the rankings that universities get, because they come about in a questionable way. He wants an 'inclusive university' that offers everyone the opportunity to study, regardless of their origin or income. What they do with it, that is their business, according to Radtke.
