Hilton Head Island is part of the Lowcountry region in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It's known for Atlantic Ocean beaches and golf courses. The Harbour Town Lighthouse and Museum marks the southwest tip. The Coastal Discovery Museum features heritage buildings, trees and themed gardens. Between the island and mainland, the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge salt marsh hosts deer, alligators and birds.
Hilton Head Island is a vacation playland with famous beaches and great golf courses that overlook the Atlantic Ocean. Across Port Royal Sound, tony Hilton Head Island is South Carolina's largest barrier island and one of America's top golf spots. There are dozens of courses, many enclosed in posh private residential communities (historically known as 'plantations,' now often called 'resorts'). The island was the first eco-planned destination in the USA. Founder Charles Fraser believed a resort should blend with nature, so subdued colors, strict zoning laws (no building over five stories high, signage must be low and lit from below) and a distinct lack of streetlights characterize the environment here. But while summer traffic and miles of stoplights can stifle an appreciation of the beauty of the island, you can find some lush nature preserves, wide, white beaches hard-packed enough for bike riding, and a whole lot of dolphins.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - Sea Pines Forest Preserve HD (2017)
Hilton Head Island, sometimes referred to as simply Hilton Head, is a Lowcountry resort town and barrier island in Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States. It is 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Savannah, Georgia, and 95 miles (153 km) southwest of Charleston. The island is named after Captain William Hilton, who in 1663 identified a headland near the entrance to Port Royal Sound, which he named Hilton's Head after himself. The island features 12 miles (19 km) of beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean and is a popular vacation destination. In 2004, an estimated 2.25 million visitors pumped more than $1.5 billion into the local economy. The year-round population was 37,099 at the 2010 census, although during the peak of summer vacation season the population can swell to 150,000. Over the past decade, the island's population growth rate was 32%. Hilton Head Island is a primary city within the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort metropolitan area, which had an estimated population of 207,413 in 2015.
The island has a rich history that started with seasonal occupation by Native Americans thousands of years ago, and continued with European exploration and the Sea Island Cotton trade. It became an important base of operations for the Union blockade of the Southern ports during the Civil War. Once the island fell to Union troops, hundreds of ex-slaves flocked to Hilton Head, which is still home to many native islanders, many of whom are descendants of freed slaves known as the Gullah (or Geechee) who have managed to hold on to much of their ethnic and cultural identity.
The Town of Hilton Head Island incorporated as a municipality in 1983 and is well known for its eco-friendly development. The town's Natural Resources Division enforces the Land Management Ordinance which minimizes the impact of development and governs the style of buildings and how they are situated amongst existing trees. As a result, Hilton Head Island enjoys an unusual amount of tree cover relative to the amount of development. Approximately 70% of the island, including most of the tourist areas, is located inside gated communities. However, the town maintains several public beach access points, including one for the exclusive use of town residents, who have approved several multimillion-dollar land-buying bond referendums to control commercial growth.
Hilton Head Island offers an unusual number of cultural opportunities for a community its size, including plays at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, the 120-member full chorus of the Hilton Head Choral Society, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, an annual outdoor, tented wine tasting event on the east coast, and several other annual community festivals. It also hosts the Heritage Golf Classic, a PGA Tour tournament played on the Harbour Town Golf Links in Sea Pines Resort.

Dolphins at Myrtle Beach
A lucky chance to see a dolphin perform for us during a dolphin cruise at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The dolphins and birds are gathering around a shrimping boat waiting for it to pull up all the good stuff. I guess one dolphin got a little excited.

Pinckney Island Field Trip
Some students at Hilton Head Island Elementary School were at Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge experiencing local wildlife.
The Outback Excursion
This trip combines two of our most popular trips, The Dolphin Eco Tour and The Guided Kayak Tour, in an over the top remote location. A favorite of locals and visitors alike, this four and half hour trip is sure to be a memorable experience for your group or family.
Your Outback adventure begins at Shelter Cove Marina, where you will meet your Captain, who is also an Interpretive Naturalist Guide and will be with you throughout the experience. You will then take a scenic boat excursion through the backcountry creeks and rivers near Hilton Head, stopping for dolphins and other wildlife along the way.
Our destination is Outside Hilton Head’s private island, called Page Island. This remote location is only accessible by boat, and is most often compared to the set of a ‘Survivor’ show, the perfect outpost to begin this distinctive kayak tour. After briefly exploring the island, your guide will lead a paddling clinic to get everyone up to speed. Then your guide will launch you in your kayak from our state-of-the-art kayak launch dock. Both single and double kayaks are available, and all boats are safe and comfortable.
