Keith & Dufftown Railway

The most northerly Preserved railway in Great Britain, running between Dufftown, it's base and Keith way up past the scottish highlands.

Called the whisky line because Dufftown is in the centre of the mainland Malt whisky producing area.

Take a ride along one of Scotland's most atmospheric preserved railways and discover what it must have been like to ride on one of the many Highland branch lines in the last days before closure. This is a line that offers a warm welcome, with the staff and volunteers going that extra mile to make sure you to enjoy their railway.

The Whisky Line, Spirit Of Speyside 2015

This was one of the festival events I attended that (almost) didn’t involve whisky.
Boarding at the old train station in Keith, not far from Strathisla, the trip is an eleven-mile line linking Dufftown to Keith. The line was reopened by volunteers during 2000 and 2001, and passes through some of Scotland's most picturesque scenery, with forest and farmland, lochs and glens, castles and distilleries. The line is overgrown in some parts, and slowly travels up and down through some beautiful scenery. The whole thing feels a bit like the train in Spirited Away. Speaking of spirits, we also got a dram of Glenlivet 12 and a bit of shortbread to keep us happy. The Scandinavians in the carriage behind us had a singsong, mutilating We’ll Meet Again in the process. But sitting on a slow train to god knows where with the sun flickering through the trees and deer occasionally appearing, they could have been singing Cannibal Corpse’s Fucked With A Knife and I wouldn’t have cared. It was bliss.

The Cabrach distillery and heritage centre

In the 1800's, the Cabrach was notorious for its illicit distilling of whisky and its ability to evade customs and excise raids due to its inaccessible and inhospitable lands. Some claim the Cabrach as one of the birthplaces of Scottish malt whisky.
The Cabrach Trust was set up to enable the regeneration of this remote upland area. Located in rural Moray, in Northeast Scotland, the Cabrach, is defined as one of the 30 most remote regions in Scotland.
As part of its ambitious regeneration plans, The Cabrach Trust plans to convert the steading buildings at Inverharroch Farm into a historic distillery and heritage centre which will showcase the rich culture and heritage of this haunting and mysterious landscape.

Cambrian Heritage Railways - Hard work over three days.

One day of three that concentrated on the running line extension to the new railhead at the crossing behind TP and thro' Salop Rd Bridge(GWB). The new drainage works for the crossing were carried out, and also the alignment of the southern line from TP to the cattle creep. Well done all. Note Ballast does not like rain and we do not like wet ballast..!!!

Starting Progress On The Dufftown Loop: Part 1, Keith & Dufftown Railway

Part 1 of a variety of clips from the starting work on installing a new loop at Dufftown station. the video shows the volunteers working on permanent way. In this part the team are clearing the ballast under the track ready for the placement of extra sleepers for the pointwork. The correct sleepers are also seen being placed lineside via the use of the roadrailer to make it easyer for the team.

During our holiday in Scotland we had some showery weather as you can see from this video.

This not a so well known railway it is tucked away in the Yorkshire Dales in the town of Kirby Stephen.
The guys have worked very hard laying the track,rebuilding a new platform and wagon shed.
The line is not very long, half mile in total with plans on extending further along the old track bed.
They have some lovely loco's and rolling stock with the money and work force these could soon be restored and in service again.

This must be one of the newest miniature railways,it has only been built for a year.
The heritage centre is brand new with a gift shop and cafe.
Well worth a visit,have a meal and a train ride.
The miniature railway is set to expand further into the fir trees as well which will make for an even more enjoyable ride..

Continuing Progress On Dufftown Loop 29/01/2011: Part 1

This week saw the rail that was loaded into the 4ft last week cut to the perfect size and slotted into place as well as the crossover. Railcutting, bolt removing, ballast raking & hole drilling all included in this 2 parter of this weeks hard work.
