Dreamers and Deportations
The Hart Leadership Program convened a public conversation about “Dreamers,” focusing on the experiences and leadership that young undocumented men and women have generated across political, generational, and cultural divides.
The conversation included:
Maggie Loredo: Maggie founded Otros Dreams en Accion, an organization that helps those who have been deported to Mexico get familiarized with their new home.
Adriana Figueroa: Adriana immigrated to the United States at age 5 and returned to Mexico when she was 18. She was recently granted her tourist visa (after 12 years) and this was only her second time on US soil since she left.
Axel Herrera: Dreamer and founder of the Duke University chapter of Define American, a national organization that looks to humanize the conversation around immigrants, citizenship, and identity.
Moderator: Gunther Peck, Director, Hart Leadership Program.
The project is part of a series called Connect2Politics, a leadership initiative for Duke undergraduates interested in political engagement. The initiative is run by the Hart Leadership Program.

SUMMARY
=======
Duke University is a private research university in Durham, North Carolina. Founded by Methodists and Quakers in the present-day town of Trinity in 1838, the school moved to Durham in 1892. In 1924, tobacco and electric power industrialist James Buchanan Duke established The Duke Endowment and the institution changed its name to honor his deceased father, Washington Duke.
Duke's campus spans over 8,600 acres (3,500 hectares) on three contiguous campuses in Durham as well as a marine lab in Beaufort. The main campus—designed largely by architect Julian Abele—incorporates Gothic architecture with the 210-foot (64-meter) Duke Chapel at the campus' center and highest point of elevation. The first-year-populated East Campus contains Georgian-style architecture, while the main Gothic-style West Campus 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) away is adjacent to the Medical Center. The university runs two concurrent universities in Asia, Duke Kunshan University in Kunshan, China, and Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore.
Duke is ranked 8th in the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Ranking and 22nd in the U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Ranking. In 2017, Forbes lists Duke among the top ten universities to produce the most Forbes 400 billionaires. In a corporate study carried out by The New York Times, Duke's graduates were shown to be among the most sought-after and valued in the world, and Forbes magazine ranked Duke 7th in the world on its list of 'power factories'.As of 2018, 13 Nobel laureates and 3 Turing Award winners have been affiliated with the university. Further, Duke alumni include 40 Rhodes Scholars and 25 Churchill Scholars. The university has produced the 5th highest number of Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater, and Udall Scholars of any American university between 1986 and 2015. In 2018, the Wall Street Journal ranked Duke first (tied with Harvard and Yale) for graduate outcomes. As of 2018, Duke also holds a top-ten position in several national rankings.

Robert Geolas - The RTP asks: What great things can we do together? (11/19/2013)
The Fidelity Investment Speakers Series presents Robert Geolas, president & CEO of the Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina.
The Research Triangle Park started out as a bold idea, a vision from North Carolina's leaders for the future of a struggling state, Geolas said. Over the last 50 years, the businesses, universities, and civic leaders who believed in RTP overcame daunting obstacles to make North Carolina a global leader. Today, RTP is home to more than 170 companies that employ more than 40,000 people. Its success helps improve access to education and jobs, creating opportunities for people across North Carolina to improve their quality of life. But our state faces new challenges: rising international competition and a changing economy threaten to once again leave North Carolina businesses and workers behind. Against this backdrop, RTP is reconnecting with North Carolina so we can reimagine our future -- and ultimately redevelop the Park to lead North Carolina in the innovation economy. We now call on all North Carolinians to join us to go big, think big and do big things.

Festival of Dangerous Ideas 2013: David Simon - Some People are More Equal than Others
There are two Americas. In one, bankers get golden parachutes, insider traders return to society as well-paid consultants, and influence is for sale. In the other, opportunity is scarce and forgiveness scarcer, jail awaits those caught possessing recreational drugs, and cries for help are ignored. Society preaches forgiveness for the rich and retribution for the poor. Entrenched inequality and its companion, poverty, are the dark side of the American dream for a citizenry united by name, but not by rules.
Is the divide fair, the result of natural winners and losers, or is it built into the system? We know that inequality is bad for the rich as well as the poor, and that more equal countries are healthier and happier, but this knowledge won't bring change by itself. What can be done when those with the power to change the divide are those that benefit most from it? As long as the more equal won't let go, the less equal will suffer.
From his journalist days on the crime beat through to his work on shows like The Wire and Treme, David Simon has brought the divide between these two America's to life like no other. Simon looks at the oppressed, the victims of manmade disasters such as the war on drugs through to natural disaster such as Hurricane Katrina, and forces us to ask whether the fictional stories he shows us on screen are any less real than the theatre of compassion we see on the news from the very same people who have the power to treat all citizens equally but choose not to.
David Simon is a journalist, author, and television writer/producer best known as the creator and showrunner of HBO series The Wire and Treme. He spent twelve years on the crime beat for the Baltimore Sun. He also worked on the adaptations of his books Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets and The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood for NBC and HBO respectively.
Chair: Michael Williams is the director of Melbourne's The Wheeler Centre. He worked in publishing and radio broadcasting before joining The Wheeler Centre as programming director at the Centre's inception, helping nurture it into a culturally significant institution.
