Prato Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Prato, Tuscany, Central Italy, from 1954 the seat of the Bishop of Prato, having been previously, from 1653, a cathedral in the Diocese of Pistoia and Prato. It is dedicated to Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr. It is one of the most ancient churches in the city, and was already in existence in the 10th century. It was built in several successive stages in the Romanesque style. The church contains a number of notable works of art, in particular fine sculpture.
The church of Saint Stephen was built in a green meadow (Prato) after an appearance of the Virgin Mary near the village of Borgo al Cornio (the present center of Prato). The first building was a small parish church. which the earliest document dates from AD 994. The expansion of the church began in the 15th century and transformed the modest building into one of the most lovely Gothic-Romanesque buildings in Tuscany.
The cathedral is documented as early as the 10th century as the Pieve di Santo Stefano, located in the Borgo al Cornio, the first settlement in Prato. The current structure dates from the Romanesque period of the 12th century: the nave, side walls and greater part of the bell tower remain from this date. The upper stage of the bell tower was constructed in 1356.
During the 14th century the cathedral acquired an important relic, the Sacra Cintola or Belt of the Holy Virgin. This brought about the enlargement of the edifice by the addition of a transept which is attributed to Giovanni Pisano, but is probably the work of a pupil of Nicola Pisano. The Cintola Chapel was also built at this time to house the relic.
In the early 15th century, a new façade or west front was added in the International Gothic style, in front of the old one. In the space between the two was created a narthex or corridor leading to the external pulpit, built by Michelozzo and decorated by Donatello between 1428 and 1438. The seven original reliefs of the parapet were removed from the pulpit in 1967 and can be seen today in Prato's cathedral museum.
The façade has a single central portal with a lintelled doorway surmounted by a Gothic arch. In the lunette over the door is a glazed terracotta sculpture by Andrea della Robbia depicting the Madonna with Saints Stephen and John. Below the central gable, a decorative clock is set into the façade, in place of a central window. It is surrounded by segments of the contrasting marble and forms part of the harmonious design. The frescoes of the transept chapel are also of the 15th century, but are in the Renaissance painting style.
The Cintola Chapel (Italian: Cappella del Sacro Cingolo) is located under the last arch of the north aisle, next to the counter-façade. It houses the Sacra Cintola or Girdle of Thomas, the belt which, according to the tradition, was given to Saint Thomas by the Virgin Mary during the Assumption. It was brought to Prato in the 13th century.
A small staircase leads from the old church to the 14th-century transept, which has five high cross vaults, each ending in an apse divided by pilasters. The presbytery has three works by the American artist Robert Morris (2000–2001). Internally, the church, built on a Latin cross ground plan, has a nave and two side aisles, all in Romanesque style and dating from the early 13th century. They are separated by elegant columns of green serpentine, the capitals being attributed to Guidetto. The vaults, designed by Ferdinando Tacca, were added in the 17th century.

Le campane del Duomo di Prato - PRIMO VIDEO IN CELLA CAMPANARIA
Finalmente dopo anni d'attesa ce l' ho fatta a salire e vedere le campane più importanti della mia diocesi...grazie al prezioso contributo di Don Silvano Pagliarin e altri sacerdoti della curia. Quest anno hanno finalmente reso accessibile il campanile ai turisti, però l' itinerario s' interrompe al penultimo piano. Per arrivare su in cella c' è una scala in ferro incastrata e fissata sulla struttura del campanile che per motivi di sicurezza non ci fanno salire i turisti(anche se apparte me che sanno della mia passione e altri addetti ci è stato consentito, poichè per essere salita da due persone non ci sono problemi).
Sono salito proprio per la festa patronale di Santo Stefano(26 dicembre), proprio quando viene eseguito il Grande Doppio delle campane del duomo(distese singole e plenum ascendente) con il sonello medievale chiamato 'Stefanina' col nome del santo.
La terza (Re3) ha il motore che ogni tanto fa le bizze e in questo video non parte neppure(non è la prima volta che succede), proverò più avanti a chiedere di salire di nuovo per registrare suonate anche con essa. Tutto sommato è andata benissimo, sebbene alcune parti del video siano un pò mosse(la cella campanaria è assai ingombrata dalle 5 campane e per inquadrarle mi è toccato girare la telecamera in continuazione. L h4n ha funzionato anch esso ottimamente nonostante l' enorme rumore di 5 campane molto vicine alla fonte di registrazione e perdipiù udibili anche a 10 km di distanza. Perdipiù ora ho anche tutti e 6 i diametri corretti.

Il pulpito del Duomo di Prato è un'opera di Donatello e Michelozzo, databile al 1428-1438. Composto in marmo, bronzo e tessere di mosaico, è collocato sul fianco sud-est della cattedrale di Prato (i rilievi originali sono oggi nel Museo dell'Opera del Duomo) e misura in altezza 210 cm senza il tetto; ciascuna formella misura invece 73,5x79.
Dal pulpito si faceva e si fa tuttora l'ostensione pubblica dell'importante reliquia della Sacra Cintola della Madonna, che ancora oggi si mostra per Natale, Pasqua, il 1º maggio, il 15 agosto e, nelle forme più solenni, l'8 settembre, festa della Natività di Maria.
Il Pulpito, destinato esclusivamente alle ostensioni della Sacra Cintola, fu studiato in posizione angolare a far da cerniera tra il fianco romanico e la facciata tardo gotica della chiesa, e tra le due piazze nelle quali si raccoglievano i pellegrini. Lo spigolo della chiesa costituisce il basamento (che era previsto scanalato) del pulpito; vi poggia il capitello bronzeo, ricco di spunti decorativi, con ricordi classici, e concluso da un originalissimo angioletto che si affaccia, al centro, e sostiene le prime cornici marmoree soprastanti, a fasce concentriche progressivamente sporgenti, riccamente ornate. Le sormontano quindici mensole a voluta che sorreggono il piano del pulpito, accentuandone con la loro posizione radiale l'effetto rotatorio, centrifugo.
Il parapetto in marmo bianco suggerisce le forme di un tempietto circolare sorretto da pilastrini binati che lo suddividono in sette riquadri (73,5x79 cm ciascuno), in ciascuno dei quali scoppia incontenibile una vivace danza di gruppi di angeli (ispirati ai putti-genietti dei sepolcri romani), la cui gioia per l'ostensione della Cintola si manifesta nella libertà dei gesti dal ritmo incalzante, resi pittoricamente grazie allo stiacciato, che consente di suggerire complessi scorci prospettici, e al vibrare del mosaico del fondo, i cui riflessi di luce accentuavano l'effetto di movimento. La scelta del tema dei putti danzanti fu insolita. Alcuni la mettono in relazione ai Salmi 148-150, dove si invita a lodare Dio con cori e danze di bambini, altri la ricollegano ai cantori e angeli danzanti che fin dal XIII secolo erano associati ai temi dell'Assunzione o dell'Incoronazione della Vergine.
Il Pulpito è concluso dallo slanciato, elegantissimo baldacchino a ombrello, con controsoffitto ligneo a riquadrature radiali (in origine dipinto in rosso, azzurro e oro).
