Tour Martha's Vineyard Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts
Driving Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard September 2018
Oak Bluffs is a town located on the island of Martha's Vineyard in Dukes County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 3,713 at the 2000 census and was estimated at 3,735 as of 2008. It is one of the island's principal points of arrival for summer tourists, and is noted for its gingerbread cottages and other well-preserved late-nineteenth-century buildings.
History:
Oak Bluffs was first settled by Europeans in 1642 and was part of Edgartown until 1880, when it was officially incorporated as Cottage City. The town re-incorporated in 1907 as Oak Bluffs, named because the town was the site of an oak grove along the bluffs overlooking Nantucket Sound. Oak Bluffs was the only one of the six towns on the island to be consciously planned, and the only one developed specifically with tourism in mind.
In 1866 Robert Morris Copeland was hired by a group of New England developers to design a planned residential community in Martha's Vineyard. The site, a large, rolling, treeless pasture overlooking Vineyard Sound, was adjacent to the immensely popular Methodist camp meeting, Wesleyan Grove, a curving network of narrow streets lined with quaint Carpenter's Gothic cottages, picket fences, and pocket parks. Seeking to take advantage of the camp's seasonal popularity (and overflowing population), the developers established Oak Bluffs Land and Wharf Company, gaining immediate success: Five hundred lots were sold between 1868 and 1871. Copeland would end up creating three plans for the community to accommodate its constant expansion. Oak Bluffs is the one of the earliest planned residential communities and largely informed later suburban development in the United States.
Some of the earliest visitors to the area that became Cottage City and later Oak Bluffs were Methodists, who gathered in the oak grove each summer for multi-day religious camp meetings held under large tents and in the open air. As families returned to the grove year after year, tents pitched on the ground gave way to tents pitched on wooden platforms and eventually to small wooden cottages. Small in scale and closely packed, the cottages grew more elaborate over time. Porches, balconies, elaborate door and window frames became common, as did complex wooden scrollwork affixed to the roof edges as decorative trim. The unique Carpenter's Gothic architectural style of the cottages was often accented by the owner's use of bright, multi-hue paint schemes, and gave the summer cottages a quaint, almost storybook look. Dubbed gingerbread cottages, they became a tourist attraction in their own right in the late nineteenth century. So, too, did the Tabernacle: a circular, open-sided pavilion covered by a metal roof supported by tall wrought iron columns, erected in the late 1880s, which became a venue for services and community events. The campground's gingerbread cottages are cherished historic landmarks as well as very expensive real estate. Many are still family owned and passed on generation to generation. On April 5, 2005, the grounds and buildings in the Campground were designated a National Historic Landmark by the Secretary of the Interior.
Nineteenth-century tourists, arriving by steamer from the mainland, could also choose from a wide range of secular attractions: shops, restaurants, ice cream parlors, dance halls, band concerts, walks along seaside promenades, or swims in the waters of Nantucket Sound. Resort hotels, of which the Wesley House is the sole surviving example, lined the waterfront and the bluffs. For a time, a narrow-gauge railway carried curious travelers from the steamship wharf in Oak Bluffs to Edgartown, running along tracks laid on what is now Joseph Sylvia State Beach. In 1884, the Flying Horses Carousel was brought to Oak Bluffs from Coney Island and installed a few blocks inland from the ocean, where it remains in operation today. Built in 1876, it is the oldest platform carousel still in operation. Like the grounds and buildings of the Campground (so designated in April 2005), the Flying Horses were designated a National Historic Landmark by the Secretary of the Interior.
In 1873 the neighboring community of Harthaven was established by William H. Hart when he purchased a lot from the Oak Bluffs Land and Wharf Company. The community later moved in 1911 to its present location between Oak Bluffs town and Edgartown.

- When a premier builder builds his own home, he applies all the innovative and state-of-the-art qualities, appointments, and technology he has made for his clients over the years. It becomes the best of the best in every respect. This home is that property. The term over the top is applicable here.
Combine this with the impeccable taste of his wife it’s a win/win situation. Not only is the home remarkable, but the landscaping, the views, and access to the private beach on the Lagoon enhance an already unique property. There are custom cabinets and woodwork throughout the home, each ceiling has a different height and design.
The 8' high custom entrance door and custom sized windows distinguish the building. Ledge stone used at the outside entrance rolls into the interior dining room, living room, and kitchen.
The grand foyer opens to the dining room to the left and the living room with a fireplace on the water side.
An elegant powder room with Ralph Lauren cork textured walls can be found at the entrance to the home.
The ledge rock combines natural and formal elements in the dining room with custom cabinets and a crystal chandelier which opens to the living room beyond and water views of the Lagoon.
The fireplace is the central focus of the living room with room above for dynamic artwork. Of course the main focus is always the water views.
The kitchen, located at the north side of the house, is as remarkable as the balance of the house. A
pizza oven, 2 dishwashers, a Thermador Column System for refrigeration and floor to ceiling wine cooler further demonstrate the intricate details of the house.
The kitchen opens to a comfortable den with wood burning fireplace and corner windows overlooking the water. An efficient built in bar is between the den and living room for easy entertaining.
A gracious hall takes you by the covered deck with outdoor dining and the office or den with it’s bead board curved ceiling, and open views of the Lagoon.
The luxurious master suite is in the south wing of the house with a fireplace, private deck and outdoor shower. The exceptionally designed bath, laundry area and a walk in closet . There are well designed, elegant closets but this is a closet above all closets.
The lower level has direct water views from every room. Built into a hill, it has expansive views
overlooking the Lagoon.
A pleasant sitting room services the guest rooms on the lower level. There are two en suite guest rooms with large, bright baths located on the water side.
Well planned storage and utility space and additional closets have been designed in the hall. A unique
laundry room following the carefully planned design of the house is available on this level as is access to the oversized two car garage.
There are sliders to the outdoors where you will find the perfectly placed Jacuzzi tub and stairs to your private beach on the Lagoon.
The house is well situated to take advantage of one of the more expansive views of the Lagoon. A natural walkway takes you to the private beach and access to the mooring.

Martha's Vineyard Vacation
Everyone loves Martha's Vineyard. Bike, sail, swim, shop, eat, fly a kite, relax. Each town offers something special.
Located only seven miles off the Massachusetts coastline, Martha's Vineyard is a 45-minute ferry ride from Woods Hole or Hyannis. Although the island is about 10 by 20 miles in size, cars are not a necessity during the summer months because shuttles and trolleys transport vacationers from town to town. Visitors who do plan to bring a car are encouraged to make reservations early.

Vineyard Haven Massachusetts (MA) Real Estate Tour
Tour Vineyard Haven, MA neighborhoods, condominium developments, subdivisions, schools, landmarks, recreational areas, and town offices.
Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts is a town on beautiful Martha's Vineyard, the world-renowned island and vacation spot off the coast of Massachusetts. Excellent shops, fine restaurants, and a beautiful harbor are only a few of the attractions that make Vineyard Haven so special to tourists and residents alike.
The town that incorporates Vineyard Haven is called Tisbury, after a parish in England near the birthplace of the island's first governor, Thomas Mayhew. English settlement of the area dates from the mid-1600s, when Mayhew purchased the settlement rights from the local Wampanoag.
Owen Park, off Main Street just beyond the shopping district, is named for gramophone innovator William Barry Owen, whose wife donated the parcel for public use. The town beach here is a fine place to watch the harbor. Ferries shuttle in and out, providing the island's year-round connection to the mainland. On the opposite side of Main Street from Owen Park is the Old Schoolhouse Museum. Erected in 1828, this building has served many uses. It was once a carpentry shop, a school, and later served as Vineyard Haven's Congregational Church.
In front of the museum stands the tall white Liberty Pole, commemorating the daring of three young women who inserted gun powder in the base of the Vineyard Haven's liberty pole in 1778 and blew it up to keep it from being used as a spar by a British warship. When the Congregationalists outgrew their little church in 1844, they built a neoclassic building on Spring Street that later became the Unitarian Church and eventually the town hall. Vineyard Haven's municipal building is one of the island's most handsome architectural legacies of whaling days. The Vineyard Playhouse building, on Church Street, was built in 1833 as a Methodist meeting house. Today it houses the island's only year-round professional theater company.
When ships were powered by wind and canvas, Vineyard Haven was one of New England's busiest ports because of its strategic location on the sailing routes. Most of the coastwise shipping traveled through Vineyard Sound (13,814 vessels were counted in 1845). Holmes Hole, as this harbor community was called, provided a convenient anchorage. Here a ship and its crew could lay over comfortably to wait out bad weather, pick up provisions, or take on an experienced local pilot who could negotiate the rips and shoals that were the special perils of this sea route.
In addition to Owen Park, the town of Vineyard Haven maintains War Veterans' Memorial Park off Causeway Road (located just behind the fire station). The park includes playground equipment for young children and playing fields used by local ball teams. For other town tours visit . For towns in MA visit . For MA relocation information go to . Turtle Creek - Leading the Charge for Massachusetts Wine
Widely regarded as one of the best producers of vinifera grape wines in Massachusetts, New England, and beyond, Turtle Creek Winery is leading the charge for high quality wine in the state.
Kip Kumler, the owner and winemaker of Turtle Creek, opened the winery in 1998 and specializes in making small production, handcrafted wines including Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Riesling.
Turtle Creek's motto, Classic Wines from Noble Grapes in a Dangerous Neighborhood, refers to Kumler's desire to produce high quality wine from vinifera grapes in a cold weather -- and often non-forgiving - climate. Turtle Creek does not produce any hybrid grape or fruit wines, nor does the winery produce any so-called tourist wines.
The winery produces about nine hundred cases per year, with much of the grapes grown in a meticulously managed vineyard on land leased from the Town of Lincoln. Turtle Creek also purchases ultra-premium fruit from select growers in California.
In this segment, Kumler takes us on a tour of his wonderful winery (including one of the most impressive barrel rooms in the state) and offers some excellent insight on his approach to winemaking. And watch as Kumler and his team stride through the vineyard harvesting grapes amongst dozens of rows of elegant and beautiful vines.
Turtle Creek Winery is located in Lincoln, MA. The winery offers tours and tastings by appointment. To make a reservation, visit
Editor's note: This video segment was produced by French Oak TV and is the tenth in a series profiling the Massachusetts Farm Winery & Growers Association and each of its member wineries.

Video of 84 William Street | Vineyard Haven MA real estate & homes on Martha's Vineyard
William Street - The quiet, elegant Historic District in Vineyard Haven just a block from Main Street lined with classic homes and well maintained yards; a neighborhood that takes pride in it's heritage. This Greek Revival home built in 1850, updated over the years and most recently in 2016 is within walking distance of the ferry, all activity on Main Street, swimming, boating and band concerts at Owen Little Park. Walking is the operative for your morning coffee and paper, to pick up your mail, fresh fish at the Net Result and the select number of restaurants. An open dining room and living room with fireplace are at the front of the house along with the formal foyer and classic stairway. A master suite with private bath and walk in closet command the front of the house with peeks of the Harbor. A small room or office could be integrated into the master bedroom. There are two other bedrooms on this level along with another full bath. An open stairway to the finished third floor provides an additional 600 sf of living space. Move in an enjoy the charm of the property and the premier location and neighborhood.
