The church of Saint-Martin is one of the churches of Pau , located in the heart of the city at the gates of the district of the castle of Pau . A first church Saint-Martin was built between 1468 and 1472 on a site located opposite the castle of Pau. The order to enlarge the small original chapel was, thus, taken by Gaston IV of Foix-Béarn . It will be the seat of the only parish of Pau until 1803 . Under the influence of the Albret family , the church became a Protestant temple between 1563 and 1620 . Too small for the population of Pau, the church of St. Martin will be replaced in 1871 by a new sanctuary placed a little further to the east.
It will be decided to destroy the old church Saint-Martin in 1885 . The bell tower of the church had been partly destroyed in 1794 . It was rebuilt in wood in 1805 before being completely rebuilt during the construction of the new church Saint-Martin. This bell tower still exists in this form, it is now considered the tower of the Parliament of Navarre
Having become too small and dilapidated, the Saint-Martin church was rebuilt on another site. The choice of the place of implantation occasioned about fifteen years of debates. The construction principle was decided in 1851 , but the final site was not chosen until 1860 instead of the old hotel Gontaut. The first stone was laid in 1863 and work finally began in 1864 . The church was inaugurated on December 21, 1871 as a result of work by the architect Émile Boeswillwald. Work was still necessary to complete the church in the last years of the xix th century.
The new church Saint-Martin is of Gothic Revival architecture with Byzantine influences. It consists of: a central nave flanked by two secondary naves, a transept, a choir, and four other apses. The materials used are Arudy stone and lighter Angoulême stone . The stained glass windows were made by Louis Steinheil .

L'église Saint-Jacques occupe l'emplacement d'une ancienne chapelle, du même nom, construite en 1651 par l'ordre des Cordeliers. Les pèlerins se rendant à Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle étaient ainsi accueillis au sein de cette dernière.
Au XIXe siècle, la ville est organisée autour de deux paroisses. Les églises primitives de Saint-Martin et Saint-Jacques sont néanmoins trop petites pour accueillir un nombre grandissant de fidèles. La ville de Pau choisit donc de construire une nouvelle église à proximité immédiate du boulevard du Midi, devenu le boulevard des Pyrénées, et des palaces accueillant les touristes fortunés de toute l'Europe.
Dès lors considéré comme le projet des touristes, une souscription populaire est lancée en 1860 afin de construire la véritable église des palois en lieu et place de la vieillissante chapelle Saint-Jacques. Fort du succès de la souscription, les travaux de l'église peuvent être lancés dès juillet 1861 sous la direction de l'architecte Loupot2. Les travaux sont finalement achevés en 1868, soit trois ans avant l'inauguration de l'église Saint-Martin.

Au centre de la vieille ville de Pau, dans le Béarn, se dresse le château de Pau, célèbre pour avoir vu la naissance du roi de France et de Navarre, Henri IV. Ce château porte aujourd'hui les marques de cette présence imposante : les représentations diverses du « bon roi » Henri ornent les murs de toutes parts.
Mais le château, bien plus ancien en fait que l'association des royaumes navarrais et français, porte en lui les marques tourmentées de l'histoire moderne, sous la figure bienveillante du « Vert galant ». Il a été classé monument historique en 1840.

Le futur Henri IV naît au château le 13 décembre 1553. La renommée de ce roi, bercé enfant dans une carapace de tortue précieusement conservée dans le château,
Une première église Saint-Martin fut construite entre 1468 et 1472 sur un emplacement situé en face du château de Pau. L'ordre d'agrandir la petite chapelle originelle fut, ainsi, prise par Gaston IV de Foix-Béarn. Elle sera le siège de l'unique paroisse de Pau jusqu'en 1803. Trop exiguë pour la population paloise, l'église Saint-Martin sera remplacée en 1871 par un nouveau sanctuaire placé un peu plus à l'est.
Il sera donc décidé de détruite l'ancienne église Saint-Martin en 1885. Le clocher de l'église avait lui été en partie détruit en 1794. Il fut rebâti en bois en 1805 avant d'être reconstruit complètement durant la construction de la nouvelle église Saint-Martin. Ce clocher existe toujours sous cette forme, il est désormais considéré comme la tour du Parlement de Navarre. La nouvelle église Saint-Martin est d'architecture néogothique aux décors d'influence byzantine. Elle se compose: d'une nef centrale flanquée de deux nefs secondaires, d'un transept, d'un chœur, et de quatre autres absides. Les matériaux utilisés sont la pierre d'Arudy et la pierre d'Angoulême plus claire. Les vitraux ont, quant à eux, été réalisés par Louis Steinheil.

The Saint-Jacques church is one of the churches of Pau , located in the heart of the city next to the courthouse. The church of Saint-Jacques occupies the site of an old chapel, of the same name, built in 1651 by the order of the Cordeliers. Pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela were thus welcomed into the latter.
In the xix th century , the city is organized around two parishes. The primitive churches of Saint-Martin and Saint-Jacques are nevertheless too small to accommodate a growing number of faithful. The city of Pau chose to build a new church in the immediate vicinity of the Boulevard du Midi, now the Boulevard des Pyrénées , and palaces welcoming wealthy tourists from all over Europe.
Therefore considered as the project of tourists, a popular subscription is launched in 1860 to build the real church of the palies in place of the old chapel Saint-Jacques. With the success of the subscription, the work of the church can be launched in July 1861 under the direction of the architect Loupot. The work was finally completed in 1868 , three years before the inauguration of the Saint Martin church .
The wear of time and finally the storm of 1999 will be right of the two arrows of the church. These had been made of brick with stone facings. All these external aggressions have made them particularly fragile and unstable. The municipality decided to remove the two arrows from the church in 2001 .
After more than 10 years without its arrows, the city of Pau has finally decided to commit nearly 1.5 million euros to rehabilitate the two arrows but also to revise the entire slate cover, remove all water inlets and the restoration of three particularly damaged stained glass windows. Finally, the church finds its two arrows in 2012 . These are now 22 meters high, compared to 17 meters previously, and weigh 19 tonnes each, including 3.5 tonnes of zinc
The realization of the stained glasses was entrusted to the master glassmaker Émile Thibaud de Clermont-Ferrand . The church of Saint-Jacques has 54 stained glass windows, all listed in the general inventory of historic monuments since 1990. The windows of the chapel have been made by the Mauméjean family in the style different from Art Nouveau .

Pau is a city in southwestern France, set along the Pyrenees mountains’ northern edge approximately 85 km from the Spanish border. A walk along central Pau’s Boulevard des Pyrénées offers countryside views and mountain panoramas on clear days. The boulevard leads up to the castle of Château de Pau, birthplace of King Henry IV of France and Navarre. It now displays tapestries, period furnishings and artworks.
The first thing you notice about Pau is the location. In the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department of the new huge region of Nouvelle Aquitaine, the city is surrounded by beautiful mountains. From here it’s a short drive through the spectacular National Pyrenees Park to the border with Spain and just 125 km (77 miles) or around a 90-minute drive from the top seaside resort of Biarritz on the Atlantic Coast. Pau became the capital of the kingdom on Navarre in 1512. Its royal status was secured through Henry of Bourbon. Born in Pau Castle, he became King of France in 1589.
Three centuries later Pau was discovered by a Scottish doctor, Alexander Taylor, who announced it as the place for cures of all kinds of ailments due to the great oceanic climate, warm and wet in the winter, and just delightfully warm in the summer. The English followed the somewhat dubious doctor’s recommendation and in the 19th century, flocked here, bringing with them all the English past times: horse racing, croquet, cricket and fox-hunting. The first 18-hole golf course in Europe was built here in 1860, and it was also the first to admit women to its range. The building of the railways brought other nations to this city beside the mountains while the French found Pau just as attractive. Pau became the most fashionable resort in western Europe and remained so up until 1914.
The central old part of Pau is pedestrianized, so it’s a pleasant, relaxed city to walk around. The Boulevard de Pyrénées makes the best starting point with views to the country on one side and the majestic mountains on the other. Only a small part remains of the original keep built in 1370. The building was thoroughly taken over by Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III in the 19th century and well renovated. There are only French guided tours, but even if you don’t understand much, it’s worth going in for the splendid interiors and series of Gobelin tapestries hung on the walls to impress past guests and keep the place warm. And you can wander the magnificent gardens for free.
The thoroughly ordinary soldier Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was born here. You can see the story of how he fought in Napoleon’s armies, became Maréchal and ended up as King Charles XI of Sweden in the rooms here. Alot to see in Pau such as :

Découverte d'une fresque sur la façade de l'Eglise Saint-Martin à Oltinque
Une découverte rarissime dans le Sundgau. Deux fresques viennent d'être mises au jour sur la façade de l'Eglise Saint-Martin des Champs à Oltingue. La peinture s'étend sur 6 m de long et 2 m de large, les parties les plus anciennes remonteraient au 16e siècle.
