Ellilta: Women at Risk
Women and children are often the most exposed and abused victims of injustice, especially in the war-torn areas of Africa. Lacking meaningful resources and a sense of hope, many women resort to prostitution as a means of supporting themselves and their families. However desperate they are to leave the sex industry, they remain trapped by a lack of opportunity and rehabilitative support. Ellilta Women at Risk (EWAR) is a locally initiated and managed comprehensive approach that responds to the deep spiritual wounds of women forced into the sex industry and helps them return to meaningful relationships, work and standing.
PROJECT SCOPE
Women at Risk is projected to impact 2,595 lives in 2014. When the original project was proposed in 2009, the objective was to graduate 10 women through each cycle for a total of 50 women over 3 years. This dramatic growth has been made possible through ongoing, biblical relationship that has led to increases in program efficiency, funding for child support and prevention programs. This project continues to impact the lives a growing number of women trapped in the sex industry in Ethiopia.
SUSTAINABILITY
EWAR is a registered Ethiopian non-profit that created and owns a for-profit entity called Ellilta Products. EWAR bears the risk for Ellilta Products and is required by law to ensure that 100% of the profits made by EP goes back into the nonprofit EWAR. In 2012, Ellilta Product’s profits were $6,300.
PARTICIPATION
Women who participate in this program are put through a strict application period with seasoned recruitment officers who can ensure their commitment to the program. During the first 4 months of the program, they engage in extensive rehabilitation includes 1-on-1 counseling as well as group sessions to process their trauma. In the last 4 months of the program, they come to understand the purpose and dignity of work through a biblical worldview. Finally, the women
complete a 4-month skills training program and are introduced to opportunities for future employment. One of their future opportunities includes going to work at Ellilta Products.
