On one lazy Saturday, i decided to go up Entoto hill to clear my mind as well as enjoy the views.
In this vlog, I take you with me as I spend my midday in Entoto hill.

A ride up the Entoto mountain - the highest point in Addis Ababa
Driving a very old Toyota up the Entoto mountain was kind of scary but also exciting. Once you are on top of the mountain, you will find former palace of Emperor Menelik II and St. Mary Church of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido. Mount Entoto (Amharic: እንጦጦ?) is the highest peak overlooking the city of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, and has views of the city. It reaches 3,200 meters above sea level and is part of the Entoto mountain chain.

It is a historical place where Emperor Menelik II resided and built his palace, when he came from Ankober and founded Addis Ababa. It is considered a sacred mountain and has many monasteries. Mount Entoto is also the location of a number of celebrated churches, including Saint Raguel and Saint Mary.[1]
The mountain is densely covered by eucalyptus trees that were imported from Australia during the reign of Menelik II, and mostly planted during Emperor Haile Selassie's reign. Thus, it is sometimes referred to as the lung of Addis Ababa. The forest on the mountain is an important source of firewood for the city. It was also a source of building material in earlier times.
The Ethiopian Heritage Trust, a non-profit, non-governmental organization, is working actively to change part of the mountain to its old state, a natural park. Entoto Natural Park is the northeastern rim of Addis Abeba, on the southeastern slopes of Mt. Entoto, covering an area of 1,300 hectares. It is situated at an altitude of between 2,600 and 3,100 meters. Its annual average rainfall and temperature are 1200 mm and 14°C, respectively. The northern rim of the park serves as a watershed between the Abay (Blue Nile) and Awash rivers.
The Ethiopian Space Science Society has an observatory on the 3,200 m summit.[2]

Excursion to the Entoto Hills - june 2006 - Riki, Bessy, Jovo, Abay - The eucalyptus forests cover the Entoto Hills. The area around Addis is not naturally rich in firewood, and it was largely due to the arrival of these fast-growing exotics from Australia. The eucalyptus is a most unattractive tree, and eucalyptus plantations are generally void of birds and mammals. Entoto Natural Park spans altitudes of 2.600m to 3.200m, and offers spectacular views in all directions.
The Entoto Hills were the site of Menelik's capital before Addis Ababa was founded in 1887. The only obvius relic of this era, the still-functional Entoto Maryam Church, is an octagonal building with a traditionally painted interior, where Menelik was crowned in 1882.

Die Kirche des heiligen Raguel liegt auf einer Höhe von 3.008 m über dem Meeresspiegel. Sie wurde unter Führung eines indischen Baumeisters um 1885 errichtet. Dadurch entstand die für äthiopische Kirchenbauten sehr ungewöhnliche zweistöckige Bauweise, mit Kirchenraum und dem Allerheiligtsen im Obergeschoss. Etwas abseits der Kirche befinden sich vier in den Fels geschlagene Räume, die zum Teil der Zeit von Kaiser Dawit (1382 - 1413) zugeschrieben werden und früher als Kirche genutzt wurden. Dies auch unter der Zeit von Menelik II, bis die neue Kirche des heiligen Raguel fertiggestellt war.

Entoto Mountain Hiking Spot Near Maryam Church | Addis Ababa Day Trip
In this episode, I'm getting out of Addis Ababa nad heading to a beautiful picnic spot in the Entoto Mountains outside of Addis Ababa. To get there, one has to take a combination of four minibuses, but I opt for the harder journey of hiking up to the Entoto Maryam (St. Mary) Church, from where a walk through a nearby village leads to a beautiful open area.

One of my most pleasant walks to the Entoto Mariam (St. Mary) church, climbing for an hour the clear-aired 3500 meter above sea level Entoto Mountains through magnificent forests of Eucalyptus, and living The Spirit of a pure Christianity. Entoto Mariam. Entoto Mariam which was first built in the 14th century by King Dawit is located at the top of the hill with great view of Addis. The enthusiasm and positive energy of the faithful during monthly observance of Saint Mary's Day is overwhelmingly astonishing. What a beautiful spiritual experience!
