Roof to Appear on 9 Murder Counts as Charleston Seeks Unity
As Dylann Storm Roof awaited his first hearing on nine charges of murder, the people of Charleston sought Friday to repudiate whatever a gunman would hope to accomplish by killing black community leaders inside one of the nation's most important African-American churches. As he described plans for an evening vigil at a sports arena near the church, Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. said, A hateful person came to this community with some crazy idea he'd be able to divide, but all he did was unite us and make us love each other even more. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said the state will absolutely want the death penalty for Roof, who opened fire after sitting through a Wednesday night Bible study session inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Prosecutors stated they will seek capital punishment for his crimes because he killed more than two people while putting the lives of others at risk.
Roof entered the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church late one evening in mid-June.
A bible study took place that night.
Less than an hour after arriving and being greeted by the churchgoers, Roof allegedly produced a pistol and fired upon the group.
A federal indictment states Roof planned for months to perpetuate an environment of racial tension in the country.
The indictment added he sought retribution for wrongs he perceived were committed against white people,

The Charleston church shooting (also known as the Charleston church massacre[6][7][8]) was a mass shooting that took place at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, United States, on the evening of June 17, 2015. During a prayer service, nine people were killed by a gunman, including the senior pastor, state senator Clementa C. Pinckney; a tenth victim survived. The morning after the attack, police arrested a suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Dylann Roof, in Shelby, North Carolina. Roof later confessed that he committed the shooting in hopes of igniting a race war.
The United States Department of Justice investigated whether the shooting was a hate crime or an act of domestic terrorism, eventually indicting Roof on 33 federal hate crime charges. Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church is one of the United States' oldest black churches and has long been a site for community organization around civil rights. Roof is to be indicted on federal hate crime charges, and has been charged with nine counts of murder by the State of South Carolina. If convicted, he could face a sentence of death or thirty years to life in prison. A website apparently published by Roof included a manifesto detailing his beliefs on race, as well as several photographs showing him posing with emblems associated with white supremacy. Roof's photos of the Confederate battle flag triggered debate on its modern display.

Dylann Roof: Charleston South Carolina Church Shooting
Nine people are dead after shooting which occurred 9pm on Wednesday at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. The congregation, established in 1816, is one of the oldest African American churches in the United States.
Gunman Dylann Roof was attending a bible study meeting at the church and told the worshipers, I have to do it. You rape our women and you’re taking over our country and you have to go.
Dylann Roof Found Guilty On All Charges
A jury has convicted Dylann Roof on all charges after he massacred a black congregation. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
Dylann Roof was convicted Thursday in the chilling slaughter of nine black church members who had welcomed him to their Bible study, a devastating crime in a country that was already deeply embroiled in racial tension.
The same federal jury that found Roof guilty of all 33 counts will reconvene next month to hear more testimony and weigh whether to sentence him to death. As the verdict was read, Roof just stared ahead, much as he did the entire trial. Family members of victims held hands and squeezed one another's arms. One woman nodded her head every time the clerk said guilty.
Roof, 22, told FBI agents he wanted to bring back segregation or perhaps start a race war with the slayings. Instead, the single biggest change to emerge from the June 17, 2015, killings was the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Statehouse, where it had flown for 50 years over the Capitol or on the grounds. Roof appeared with the flag in several photos in a racist manifesto.
The shooting happened just months after Walter Scott, an unarmed black man, was killed by white police officer Michael Slager when he fled a traffic stop in North Charleston. Police shootings around the county have heightened tensions between black communities and the law enforcement agencies that patrol them, sometimes resulting in protests and riots
.
In Roof's confession to the FBI, the gunman said he carried out the killings after researching black on white crime on the internet. He said he chose a church because that setting posed little danger to him.
Roof told the judge again Thursday that he wanted to act as his own attorney during the penalty phase. He will also face a death penalty trial in state court on nine murder charges.
In closing arguments, Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan Williams mocked Roof for calling himself brave in his hate-filled journal and during his confession, saying the real bravery came from the victims who tried to stop him as he fired 77 bullets at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church.*
