Most Unbelievable Sunken Ship Discoveries
Subscribe to Knowledge Feed for awesome mysteries, discoveries, fun topics and all around AWESOME videos !
8. Dmitri Donskoi
In mid-2018, a South Korean diving team uncovered a sunken ship that contained over one hundred and thirty five billion dollars in gold. Identified as the Dmitri Donskoi, the ship was sunk over a century ago during the brutal Russo-Japanese War. The Russians intentionally sunk the ship to prevent its cargo from falling into the hands of the Japanese. Divers reported that the ship is in surprisingly good condition; the cannons, machine guns, anchors, and steering wheel are all in their original positioning spaces. Additionally, the hull and upper deck are almost entirely intact.
7. A Portuguese Treasure Trove
In September of 2018, a team discovered a ship wrecked just forty feet below the water’s surface off of the coast of Cascais, Portugal. Dated to around 1575 and 1625, the ship gives a significant look into a portion of the country’s past that has long been murky. The four hundred year old wreckage contained a collection of spices, nine bronze cannons emblazoned with the Portuguese coat of arms, and Chinese ceramics and cowrie shells that were once used as a form of currency during the antiquated slave trades.
6. The Oldest Intact Wreck in the World
Through using some of the most advanced searching techniques available, researchers discovered the oldest intact shipwreck ever found while studying the Black Sea. Radiocarbon dating of the ship places it at more than 2,400 years old, leading researchers to believe that it was active at around 400 BC.
5. Skeletons on the Antikythera
Sponge divers discovered a small ship wrecked off of the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera in 1900; since then, archaeologists and researchers have discovered several priceless artifacts including the Antikythera Device, an early clock that showed modelling of the sun, moon, and planets. The 2,000 year old merchant ship has since provided a seemingly endless supply of surprises and artifacts; each time researchers dive in the area they come up with something new.
4. Quintuple Wreckage
Between the first and fourth century BC, Roman ships frequented the Mediterranean. The turbulent waters claimed countless vessels, storms and collisions causing them to sink to the bottom of the sea. Recently, researchers uncovered an absolutely incredible cache of five well preserved Roman ships just off of the coast of Ventotene. Inside were jars of wine, olive oil, and other liquids along with a large selection of what is believed to be kitchen items being brought for trade and sale.
3. The Esmeralda
In 1502, Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama lead a fleet of ships with the aspiration to reach India. Tragedy struck and two of his ships sunk and were assumed lost forever. Fortunately, in 2013 divers discovered pieces of one of the ships, named the Esmeralda, at the bottom of the sea. Over five centuries had past but, amazingly, a selection of artifacts remained in shockingly good condition. Twelve Portuguese coins were found, along with a navigational tool, cannonballs, and even the ship’s intact signalling bell!
2. Century Old Wreckage
In 1906, a commercial steamer boat went missing in Lake Huron’s Georgian bay, taking with it around thirty passengers. For over a century the whereabouts of the vessel’s remains and its crew has been a bit of a local mystery, a story that has been told as a sort of tragic cautionary tale. On July 1, 2018, an international dive team discovered the wreckage of the steamer in the sediment of Lake Huron via an aquatic camera system after only two hours of searching. The ship, named J.H. Jones, was last seen by the Lighthouse Tenant and left behind only one body and a lifeboat when it initially crashed. The crew found it to be mostly intact with the smokestack toppled over onto itself; the ship’s steam engine and rudders were in nearly perfect condition. No signs of the passengers or cargo was recovered and it is believed that the remains have simply been lost to time and weather conditions.
1. Lake Erie Find
A team of shipwreck hunters spent several days during the summer of 2015 unearthing and studying a large wreck in Lake Erie. After some consideration, it is believed that the vessel very well may be the oldest one ever recovered from Lake Erie’s depths. The shallowest of the Great Lakes, Erie is located off of the shores of Ohio. A team met in the state and are debating on the exact source of the sunken ship. Many believe it to be the remains of the Lake Serpent, which sank in 1829, making it more than two hundred years old. If it is the Lake Serpent, closure will come to the families of the cargo ship. Evidence supports the theory, including a serpent carving on the ship’s hull, but positively identifying a ship from the time period is nearly impossible due to the lack of visible name plates or registration lettering on the vessel’s hull.
The Palm Island, Dubai UAE - Megastructure Development
An awe-inspiring engineering feat, Dubai Palm Islands is definitely the largest artificial islands on earth. These Islands are three man made islands in the form of massive palm trees connected to the beaches of Dubai. The first island is the Palm Jumeirah, Jebel Ali Palm second and the third is the Palm Deira which is the biggest of them all. This artificial archipelago located off the coastline of United Arab Emirates in Persian Gulf.
Dubai islands project was commissioned by Sheikh Mohammed in an effort to maximize beachfront property. Dubai's palm tree-shaped resort island on land built from the sea will contribute 120 km of beaches. Aside from the construction of the ambitious expansion, there is also the problem of constructing a mini city, which consists of 4,500 high-end residential homes, miles of roads, luxurious hotels and many amenities that will require basic human resources including electricity, safe drinking water and many more. This enormous project will position Dubai as one of the top tourist destinations in the world.
I will tell you why these islands have appeared and that they must satisfy. Dubai is an emirate that open sea about 50 km (an estimate) and the sites required for building projects are on the beach. To view course and especially to park in front of the yacht's property or even assembly.
Well when the beach was not available, and demand persists, the beach had invented. And it appeared artificial islands. Hence so sophisticated forms of the islands: they had to provide a larger opening to the ocean.
This new concept quickly caught on. 'Only a' product 'high-end, the latest wrinkle in the most creative developers metropolis. A new source of land, location of the trick of the planet Earth! The job went, the two islands were settled immediately, with mixed development, spectacular, exorbitant, and finally in Dubai's specific style ... In parallel to the World archipelago started building and other projects are still on the drawing board Nakheel, developer. But crisis compels us to winter a little ...
Where is the dream of similar islands: In Lebanon, wants to build a cedar shaped islands, the symbol of this country. Russia wants to try an island / an archipelago in Black in Sochi at the 2014 Olympics, at least that is speaking through the past years. Also in Japan there are several large airports built on artificial islands.
The Palm Islands are artificial peninsulas constructed of sand dredged from the bottom of the Persian Gulf by the Belgian company Jan De Nul and the Dutch company Van Oord.
The sand is sprayed by the dredging ships, which are guided by DGPS, onto the required area in a process known as rain-bowing because of the arcs in the air when the sand is sprayed. The outer edge of each Palm's encircling crescent is a large rock breakwater. The breakwater of the Palm Jumeirah has over seven million tons of rock.
The Palm Islands are an artificial archipelago (islands) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Major commercial and residential infrastructures will be constructed by Nakheel Properties, a property developer in The UAE. The Belgian and Dutch dredging and marine contractors, Jan De Nul and Van Oord, some of the world's specialists in land reclamation, were hired to complete construction. The islands are the Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Jebel Ali and the Palm Deira.
Each settlement will be in the shape of a palm tree, topped with a crescent. The settlements will have a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment centers. The Palm Islands are located off the coast of The UAE in the Persian Gulf and will add 520 kilometers of beaches to the city of Dubai.
The first two islands will comprise of approximately 100 million cubic meters of rock and sand. The Palm Deira will be composed of approximately one billion cubic meters of rock and sand. All materials will be quarried in The UAE. Among the three islands, there will be over 100 luxury hotels, exclusive residential beach side villas and apartments, marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities and health spas.
The creation of the Palm Jumeirah began in June 2001. Shortly after, the Palm Jebel Ali was announced and reclamation work began. The Palm Deira is planned to have a surface area of 46.35 square kilometers and was announced for development in October 2004.

Expert BP Spill Likely Cause of Sick Gulf Fish - August 15, 2011 - YouTube.flv
More than a year after the largest oil spill in U.S. history, researchers studying the Gulf of Mexico are finding that more fish are sick, and they're trying to figure out exactly why.
CBS News Correspondent Dr. Debbye Turner Bell took a trip to the Gulf recently to speak with scientists and fishermen about what's happening there.
Bell reported Lucky Russell is convinced his days as a commercial fisherman are numbered.
I don't think we'll be fishing in five years, he said. My opinion.
He, like many others that fish the Gulf waters, have started catching fish with sores, fin rot, and infections at a greater frequency than ever before.
Everybody is worried, Russell said.
Jim Cowan, professor of oceanography at Louisiana State University, has analyzed many of these diseased fish.
When one of these things comes on deck, it's sort of horrifying, Cowan said. I mean, there these large dark lesions and eroded fins and areas on the body where scales have been removed. I'dimagine I've seen 30 or 40,000 red snapper in my career, and I've never seen anything like this. At all. Ever.
Cowan can't say with certainly the cause of these lesions.
Cowan said, We think from chronic exposure to some environmental stressor, and I think the likely assumption that it has something to do with the spill is there.
But the 200 million gallons of crude spilled from the Deepwater Horizon last year is at the top of the list because the highest rate of sick fish are being found in the areas of the Gulf that were the most affected by the oil.
This whole issue seems to be centered between Galveston and Panama City... Cowan said. In fact, almost 50 percent of the red snapper that we caught on some of these reefs had had these secondary infections.
These so-called hot spots are of particular interest to University of South Florida researcher Dr. Steve Murawski. Bell caught up to him on the choppy waters 11 miles off the coast of Pensacola, Fla., while he conducted his research.
Murawski said, What we're going to do is establish a baseline for fish disease. So, even if we don't find any potential pathology now, we can go back two or three or four years from now and see if there was some slow time bomb that was going off.
This is the first comprehensive study ever done on the health of fish in the gulf. During the six-week study, Murawski will catch and examine more than 4,000 fish.
He said, It's going to important for this spill, but it's also going to be very important for the next oil spill that happens in the Gulf because we'll have this baseline.
But it's the bottom line that worries Frank Patti, owner of Joe Patti's Fish Market in Pensacola, so he prominently displays where his fish were caught.
Patti said, We still have customers that want to know where the product comes from.
The majority of his fish are not from the Gulf of Mexico.
Cowan said, We're in no way trying to infer that this is a human health issue. I can assure you that none of these fish are reaching the markets.
While consumers need not panic, Lucky Russell worries whether there will be enough healthy fish for him to make a living.
If our fish are polluted, nobody's going to get to go out there and catch fish it, Russell said.
When asked if he's worried that might happen, he replied, It very well could.
Early Show co-anchor Rebecca Jarvis added on the broadcast that the number of sick fish in the Gulf depends where you go. In areas not affected by the oil, it's one percent or less, and even in some hotspots only two percent to five percent of the fish are sick.
