Anthropology of the Dutch: Catholics in The Netherlands
The pigeonhole man is looking for the True Catholics. On his way he meets Catholics who experience and express their faith in very different ways. Thus he experiences the distinction between orthodoxy and freethinking. Where does that multiformity come from? What makes somebody a good catholic? How are modern Dutch Catholics dealing with centuries-old traditions and regulations that are so typical of the Catholic Church? And what does the church, plagued by scandals and image damage, do in order to make catholicism attractive again to young Catholics?
Original title: De Hokjesman - De Katholieken
Fascinated by the prevailing pigeonhole spirit, the pigeonhole man goes on field research into the world of appealing Dutch subcultures. With a wink to the classical ethnologist, dressed in a three-piece suit with a bow tie, he analyzes the man as one of the animal groups.

Amsterdam Free / Churches
There are way too many churches in Amsterdam, all quite unique due to their setting. But here we round up 3 of our favourites, a perfect blend of the sober and the baroque in short distance from each other.

An American gay Christian visits the Netherlands (updated)
My book about gay Christians is now out in Dutch, so I visited Holland to speak and learn about how churches there are handling these questions. (I've just re-uploaded this video with updated URLs; it was originally from 2015.)

STORYLINE:
In a rural church in the Netherlands, the candles, the piano, even the pastor's robes were all turned orange Sunday as the congregation prayed for some good Dutch courage and teamwork ahead of this evening's FIFA World Cup final against Spain.
Several hundred orange-clad worshippers gathered on Sunday morning at the church of Saint Vincent in the sleepy village of Obdam, north of Amsterdam, for a special service dedicated to cheering on the Dutch national team.
Pastor Paul Vlaar's church was one small snapshot from a nation gripped by a football frenzy, triggered by the country's first final appearance since losing back-to-back finals in 1974 and '78 to hosts West Germany and Argentina.
The Netherlands faces Spain at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, kick-off at 2030 local time (1830GMT).
Vlaar said the football-themed mass was not out of place in his small Roman Catholic church.
The congregation, wearing an assortment of football shirts, hats in team colours and painted faces, arrived to find their local place of worship festooned in football regalia.
With strings of flags hanging in the nave and orange-themed candles and floral displays, Vlaar led the congregation though rousing versions of the national anthem and hymns.
The pastor even acted as goalkeeper when one parishioner was asked to kick a football down the aisle.
Popular football melodies were played on an orange piano as the sacrament was delivered.
There were no prayers calling for a Dutch win in Sunday evening's match against Spain, but the congregation was asked to pray for the team to play well together, according to Vlaar.
Members of the congregation were more emphatic, however. Most said they expected a Dutch win.
Three-two to Holland. It's in God's hands said one.
