Amsterdam is breathtaking from the canals that's why my cousin and I rented a canal boat so we could have our own private tour. We rented the canal boat from canalmotorboats.com conveniently located west of Amsterdam Central Station and rents for 40 euros per hour but make sure to reserve a few days ahead.
Amsterdam has 2 major nightlife districts called Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein these squares are loaded with bars and night clubs. Depending on where you start, I recommend you get a delicious negroni from NJOY cocktail bar but beware, they have a strict door policy so do not show up too trashed or under dressed.
At Rembrantplein you'll find many great spots like Escape night club, Jantjesverjaardag (a popular student bar), techno club Air Amsterdam, and my favorite Club NYX for their bizarre toilet bar on the top floor where you literally can take a piss behind the DJ in a urinal on the dance floor.
If you're not into night clubs than Amsterdam has a magnitude of bars and cafes, it is what Amsterdam is best known for. Dig deep into local Dutch cafe culture in the Jordaan district at cozy places Cafe Thijsen, Gevulde Gaper, Staalmeesters and De Zotte.
For party bars and dive bars check out No. 129, Cafe Kooper, Kopstootbar and end your night either at the Water Hole for rock music and live bands or club hard at the massive Paradiso dance floor or consider Chicago Social club for a more laid back hipster kind of vibe.
In conclusion, the Amsterdam nightlife is one of world's best. The fact that bars and clubs are open late, no last call, great selection of music & venues plus a chill laid back local crowd that makes Amsterdam the absolute party capital of Europe, without a doubt. Ibiza eat your heart out! Also, make sure to watch my Amsterdam travel guide for day time activities.

Dutch family 'waiting for end of time' found in secret room - BBC News
A family who spent nine years on a farm waiting for the end of time have been discovered by police in the Netherlands after one of them turned up at a local pub, reports say.
A man of 58 and six young adults aged 18 to 25 were living at a farm in the province of Drenthe.
The family were found after the eldest of the children ordered beer at a bar in the nearby village of Ruinerwold.
He then told staff he needed help, broadcaster RTV Drenthe reported.
We found six people living in a small space in the house which could be locked but wasn't a basement, police said in a statement late on Tuesday.
The older man has been arrested. According to the family, he is the father of the six children, say police. It was not clear whether they had been there voluntarily, police added. The eldest son was not there at the time, police told the BBC.

No Roads, No Cars, Just Boats
Most of us town-and-city dwellers spend our days pounding hard, paved ground. But in Giethoorn, Holland, residents float through canals. Built without roads, a series of waterways and bridges connect the town’s 2,400 residents. This incredible aquatic infrastructure has even earned the town the nickname “Little Venice.” We have to admit, a life without asphalt, gridlock and the DMV sounds pretty enchanting.

Is Amsterdam just weed, prostitutes and bikes?
I took an overnight ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam, giving me one day, well, about 6 hours to run around Amsterdam, the capital city of The Netherlands, to see what this famous city had to offer. Is Amsterdam just weed, prostitutes and bikes?
I've never really wanted to come to Amsterdam as I'm not into weed, prostitutes or riding bikes, but when I tell people that, they always tell me that there's far more to see than what the city itself is famous for. Prostitution and weed are both legal in The Netherlands, so people, especially drunk Brits flock to Amsterdam to try out the local delicacies, pretty much ruining the place for other people. The ferry was about half-full, but that amount of drunk Brits is still hard to deal with. I know I've been one of them drunk Brits abroad on many occasions and I can see how annoying it is to be around them.
I ran around the city centre and the surrounding areas of Amsterdam in the limited time I had available before getting back on to the ferry to do another overnight cruise back to Newcastle. I'll be releasing a video about how that was next week.
From what I saw, Amsterdam is marketed heavily towards prostitution, weed and pancakes, as you'd expect. That's pretty much all I saw whilst I was there dodging bikes. The Dutch are class; every Dutch person I've ever met has been awesome, but wow, if you get in the way of somebody riding a bike, they'll let you know about it. I didn't, as I didn't go into any of the bike lanes, but I did hear A LOT of Dutch people shouting at tourists for being in their way whilst riding.
Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world. Amsterdam is also the cultural capital of the Netherlands. Amsterdam is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, receiving more than 4.63 million international visitors annually, this is excluding the 16 million day-trippers visiting the city every year.[164] The number of visitors has been growing steadily over the past decade. This can be attributed to an increasing number of European visitors. Two-thirds of the hotels are located in the city's centre.
I took a short walk through the red light district, or de wallen as it's called to see what the fuss was about. Not going to lie, wasn't impressed, I thought it was extremely seedy and harsh on the women. I'll be releasing a video next week about my thoughts on the red light district and prostitution in general in Amsterdam.
De Wallen, also known as Walletjes or Rosse Buurt (Rose Burt), is a designated area for legalised prostitution and is Amsterdam's largest and most well known red-light district. This neighbourhood has become a famous attraction for tourists. It consists of a network of roads and alleys containing several hundred small, one-room apartments rented by sex workers who offer their services from behind a window or glass door, typically illuminated with red lights.
My view overall from this short trip to Amsterdam isn't a great one, it was dirty, it smelt bad, there didn't seem a lot to do in the centre apart from smoke weed and bang prostitutes or eat waffles. The waffles were great.
This hasn't changed my view on Dutch people, they're probably the best nationality in terms of personality that I've met on my travels - I've not yet met a Dutch person I didn't like.

Do you feel FREE in the NETHERLANDS?
What is FREEDOM like in the Netherlands? Do you feel FREE?
That's the question we asked to foreigners/expats in the Netherlands.
At the 5th of May (5 mei) we celebrate Liberation Day (Bevrijdingsdag) - to mark the end of the occupation by Germany in World War II. The 4th of May (4 mei) is 'Dodenherdenking' Remembrance of the Dead - to remember those who gave their lives so we can live in freedom.

Why Grocery Shopping is Better in Amsterdam (and the Netherlands)
When it comes to differences between life in North America versus life in the Netherlands, grocery shopping might just be the biggest thing.
In this video I discuss the differences between the fresh-food approach taken in the Netherlands compared to the bulk shopping car-centric approach of North America. For our family, it's not even a question: we think the Dutch approach is far superior.

Amsterdam The City That Remembers
This DVD is digitally converted from the original broadcast tape master of a 30 minute documentary which I produced in Holland in 1997. This is a very personal project with one simple objective: to pass along to future generations awareness of the horrors of Nazi Germany's systematic genocide in WWII ... knowledge so easily lost and forgotten unless we keep it alive. After you have viewed this DVD, I hope you will place it in a school, library, church, synagogue, or other permanent place where it will be shown and viewed again and again for decades to come.
The idea for producing this documentary grew from my many trips to Amsterdam and the urging from a close friend there, Harry Moinat, that I interview Jewish survivors of the Dutch Holocaust before they all died. The more I learned the more I had to tell inspiring Amsterdam's story of resistance and determination.
Harry introduced me to a contemporary of Anne Frank, Jaap vanVelzen, who was just 12 years old when he escaped from his Nazi captors by brazenly slipping away from a kindergarten where he and other children were being held awaiting shipment to the death camps. After his escape he hid in the south of the Netherlands till war's end. He was the only member of his family to survive. Jaap later became a successful businessman and noted scholar regarding the Dutch Holocaust.
His childhood recollections are woven into this portrait of the systematic roundup of Jews, gypsies, homosexuals and the mentally impaired and their shipment out of Amsterdam using the city's own streetcars to deliver them at night to waiting Nazi freight cars at Amsterdam's central train station. From there they were shipped to Westerbork concentration camp before being sent on to their deaths at Auschwitz and other German death camps.
I wrote, shot, edited and narrated this documentary to share with you an understanding of why Amsterdam is truly The City That Remembers.
