Colorado Experience: The Stanley Hotel
Widely known as serving inspiration for Stephen King’s 1977 novel, The Shining, The Stanley Hotel’s legacy goes beyond a history of paranormal activity. When Freelan Oscar Stanley arrived in Estes Park in 1903, he was not looking for a Hotel location, but instead the climate cure for his bout with Tuberculosis. After recovering, Stanley – of Stanley Steamer fame among others—decided to open a Hotel with every luxury catered to his circle of New England elite. Travel the haunted halls and discover the architectural glory of the infamous hotel that influenced National Parks and sparked early tourism.

Scenic US Elevator at the Park Place Mall in Estes Park, Colorado!
(July 2013) Don't eat ice cream while attempting to film an elevator!
While visiting Rocky Mountain National Park with my family, I stayed two nights in this town. It was a beautiful place, although the area experienced massive flooding a couple of weeks after I left. I hope the town (which has a small river running through it) was able to rebuild itself.

The Colorado Rocky Mountains with Bill Boggs
The Rocky Mountains, commonly known as the Rockies, are a major mountain range in western North America. The Rocky Mountains stretch more than 3,000 miles (4,800 km) from the northernmost part of British Columbia, in western Canada, to New Mexico, in the southwestern United States. Within the North American Cordillera, the Rockies are somewhat distinct from the Pacific Coast Ranges and the Cascade Range and Sierra Nevada which all lie further to the west.
The Rocky Mountains were initially formed from 80 million to 55 million years ago during the Laramide orogeny, in which a number of plates began to slide underneath the North American plate. The angle of subduction was shallow, resulting in a broad belt of mountains running down western North America. Since then, further tectonic activity and erosion by glaciers have sculpted the Rockies into dramatic peaks and valleys. At the end of the last ice age, humans started to inhabit the mountain range. After Europeans, such as Sir Alexander Mackenzie, and Americans, such as the Lewis and Clark expedition, started to explore the range, minerals and furs drove the initial economic exploitation of the mountains, although the range itself never became densely populated.
Currently, much of the mountain range is protected by public parks and forest lands, and is a popular tourist destination, especially for hiking, camping, mountaineering, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, skiing, and snowboarding. - Wikipedia

A walk through the Clear Creek History Park in Golden, Colorado
Here is a quote from the Golden History Museums' website:
Clear Creek History Park is home to many of the original buildings from the old Pearce Ranch in Golden Gate Canyon (about fifteen miles away as the crow flies). When a housing development threatened the ranch buildings in the early 1990s, the community rallied together to save this piece of Golden's history. Beginning in 1994, the buildings were moved to Golden, log by log, where they were lovingly reconstructed over the course of four years. Clear Creek History Park opened its gates to walk-up visitors in the spring of 1999. Since then, we've invited thousands to take a fresh look at the frontier.

Colorado National Monument. Colorado, United States
Colorado national monument, Colorado, United States 2005
Colorado National Monument (locally referred to as The Monument) is a National Park Service unit near the city of Grand Junction, Colorado. Spectacular canyons cut deep into sandstone, and even granite–gneiss–schist, rock formations. This is an area of desert land high on the Colorado Plateau, with pinion and juniper forests on the plateau. The park hosts a wide range of wildlife, including red-tailed hawks, golden eagles, ravens, jays, desert bighorn sheep, and coyotes.[3] Activities include hiking, horseback riding, road bicycling, and scenic drives; a visitor center on the west side contains a natural history museum and gift shop. There are magnificent views from trails and the Rim Rock Drive, which winds along the plateau. Nearby are the Book Cliffs and the largest flat-topped mountain in the world, the Grand Mesa.
Its feature attraction is Monument Canyon, which runs the width of the park and includes rock formations such as Independence Monument, the Kissing Couple, and Coke Ovens. The monument includes 20,500 acres (32 square miles), much of which has been recommended to Congress for designation as wilderness.

Family Adventure to Colorado, Rocky Mountain National Park
We recap what we've been up to since our Michigan trip and look at how we decided to go to Colorado for Easter.
On this trip, we stayed at the Embassy Suites in Loveland, Co and explored Rocky Mountain National Park. The weather gave us a bit of a challenge for photography, but we made the most of it and also enjoyed some good eats! Baba's Burgers and Gyros in Estes Park was a great little spot for lunch on Day 1.
Abby chose the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for Day 2. We beat the crowds by getting there early and then headed back to the mountains. For another food find, we chose Mo Betta Gumbo in downtown Loveland, CO.
