Family travel in Sicily: Catania and Mount Etna!
Full time family travel around the world has taken us to our fifth country - Italy. For this video we moved off the boot and onto the ball - Sicily is the place of some of Matt's ancestry and it was fascinating to experience Catania, a city on the east coast. With the street market right outside our front door as well as a challenging climb up Mount Etna which lies just north of the city, it wasn't hard to see past Sicily's rough exterior to her inner beauty.

CAR RENTAL SICILY, ITALY - We’re on Another Road Trip!
What’s the best way to see Sicily? Hire a car!
We did a lot of research before going to Italy on how to get around, what is the cheapest mode of transportation and how good the public transport networks are. We found that travelling long distances (for example Rome to Palermo) the cheapest and easiest way is to get a coach. However, the best part about getting out of major cities is seeing the countryside and being able to stop in the little towns along the way. If you want to do this in Sicily then you really do need to hire a car.
Renting a car in Italy is very affordable. We hired a Fiat 500 for €17 a day, and that wasn’t even with a deal. It was a last minute straight from Hertz price, so we’re sure that you can get an even better price than that. Fuel can get quite expensive though, we were paying around €1.60 per litre, so just keep that in mind when you plan your itinerary.
What are the roads like in Italy?….Ah…..they vary. The motorways are excellent (as you should expect), main roads are normally decent (but can also be absolutely terrible), and smaller roads in and around the towns can get pretty rough (or just be completely collapsed, flooded and blocked off without a detour warning). Because of the pot luck situation with roads its a good idea to always have plenty of fuel and be prepared for reaching your destination later than expected.
While in Sicily we have booked several Airbnbs. Similar to Greece this was the cheapest accommodation option. There aren’t hostels outside of Palermo and Catania, hotels are limited and can be quite expensive as well. We found Airbnbs for around $35-$50 AUD per night for a house to ourselves. Staying in an Airbnb is another good way to save money because you can make your own food (providing you have a kitchen). Eating out in Sicily isn’t what we’d call expensive, but it’s generally above our normal budget. So we ate a simple breakfast at home, usually ate lunch out and then cooked at home. We also found a lot of the food available in Italy is not exactly healthy, so having dinner at home was our chance to have some veggies!
Something that took us by surprise and was definitely a spanner in the works - everything shuts down in the afternoon! Between 12pm and 5pm (depending on where you are, some places its 1pm to 4pm) all the shops and restaurants close down. Even some super markets close during this time. The only places we noticed were open are gelato and coffee bars. But a bonus is the roads are almost completely empty during this time and street parking is FREE! So we ended up going to towns during this time, parked for free and wandered around the area by foot in peace and quiet.

We said goodbye to our jobs, sold all our belongings, and left Australia on a one-way ticket to Shanghai with just each other and our backpacks! We plan to travel the world for a year, see as much as possible, meet as many people as we can, and most importantly MAKE OUR MONEY LAST!
When we left Australia we decided to make travel vlogs to share our journey with our friends and family back home. We also love watching other travel vloggers on YouTube, in particular Kara and Nate, The Endless Adventure, The Way Away, and Flying The Nest.

Sicily by car part 4: Nicolosi, Etna, Taormina
Video from our holidaytrip by car through Sicily in may/june 2013. See the playlist of all parts: From day 10-12 we travelled from Piazza Armerina to Nicolosi, for visiting Mount Etna the most nearby town on the South side of the Etna. We stayed at the Etna Hut, a comfortable hotel with a view in Nicolosi. The owner provided us with the right information for visiting Mount Etna. We went by car to the cable-station, that brought us half way. From there on we took a truck to reach the top, where a guide was waiting. Beautiful scenery, used as background for movies like Star Wars. On the top it was windy and cold. The snow smelled like sulphuric acid. From mount Etna we went to nearby villages en further on to Taormina on our way down south to Avola. Filmed with Panasonic SD900

Catania–Fontanarossa Airport (Italian: Aeroporto Internazionale Vincenzo Bellini di Catania-Fontanarossa) (IATA: CTA, ICAO: LICC), also known as Vincenzo Bellini Airport, is an international airport 2.3 NM (4.3 km; 2.6 mi) southwest[1] of Catania, the second largest city on the Italian island of Sicily. It is named after the opera composer Vincenzo Bellini, who was born in Catania.
It is the busiest airport in Sicily and the fifth busiest in Italy with 9.933.318 passengers in 2018.[2] Major airlines such as Alitalia, Lufthansa and KLM offer services here and connect numerous European destinations such as Rome, Munich, Amsterdam and Berlin, while low-cost airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair offer flights to leisure destinations.
With nearly two million passengers carried in 2016, the Catania/Fontanarossa - Rome/Fiumicino route is Italy's busiest air route, and Europe's fourth busiest.

Catania, Sicily Part 2 #travelingwhilebroke
Hey everyone! Sorry for the delay but here’s the final part of our trip to Catania! I was really stressed out last week and doubting the video but here it is and I hope y’all enjoy it! We had such a great time over there and most of this trip featured in the video is us using the hop on hop off tour. No I always thought this was such a touristy gimmick however it was a really great option for us because we didn’t rent a car and there’s so much to see along the coast. So this is the one time I was really wrong and I just wanted to let y’all know that it was worth the €10. Lol. Like I mentioned in the video if you need any information about the tour that we took there are representatives standing in the city center square near the elephant statue. As always, no matter if you’re traveling down that street or across the world get out there and see something #TravelingWhileBroke. ???? also the next video will for sure be out March 29!!!

Places to see in ( Catania - Italy )
Catania is an ancient port city on Sicily's east coast. It sits at the foot of Mt. Etna, an active volcano with trails leading up to the summit. The city's wide central square, Piazza del Duomo, features the whimsical Fontana dell'Elefante statue and richly decorated Catania Cathedral. In the southwest corner of the square, La Pescheria weekday fish market is a rowdy spectacle surrounded by seafood restaurants.
Catania is an Italian city on the east coast of Sicily facing the Ionian Sea. Catania is the capital of the Metropolitan City of Catania, one of the ten biggest cities in Italy. Catania is well known for its historical earthquakes, having been destroyed by catastrophic earthquakes in 1169 and 1693, and for several volcanic eruptions from the neighbouring Mount Etna. Catania is located on the east coast of the island of Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna. As observed by Strabo, the location of Catania at the foot of Mount Etna has been both a curse and a blessing. Two subterranean rivers run under the city; the Amenano, which surfaces at one single point south of Piazza Duomo, and the Longane (or Lognina).

ITALY Mount Etna & Cefalu (Sicily)
You must be very lucky to visit a cloudless Mount Etna (we were not...). But the lower slopes of the mountain have much to offer. You can walk through craters and watch old lava flows.
In springtime there are many flowers.
From Etna we drove to Cefalu through wild mountain scenery. Cefalu is a nice seaside place and it has a beautiful cathedral.
