Exploring Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam- Bustling Binh Tay Wholesale Market
*Note*-In the video I mention that Binh Tay is in District 5, it's actually located in District 6 on the border of 5. The original Binh Tay market was located in District 5.
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is on the move! It's one of the fastest changing and growing cities of Southeast Asia with modern shopping complexes springing up everywhere, a skyline filled with construction cranes, and a joint venture between Japan and Vietnam to build the city's first subway/rapid transit system. It's great to see the people of Vietnam enjoying new amenities and infrastructure but people like me still want to see the old Saigon. Traditional culture, morning markets, non-touristy neighborhoods. The good news is there's still lots to see. Around Co Bac And Co Liang streets in District 1 they still have a traditional market and if you stay in one of the guesthouses in the neighborhood you'll feel very much like a local. The other area that's still ripe with traditional shopping and culture is Cholon or District 5 and Binh Tay Market, a wholesale market that bustles everyday of the week. Cholon is where the ethnic Chinese community is based. Some say it's the biggest Chinatown in the world. I've visited the neighborhood a few times in the last year and find it fascinating, friendly, and full of life. It's also a photographer's paradise with constant activity, huge displays of food and hard goods, and people so occupied with their tasks that candid shots are a breeze. [Vivutravel] Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam travel
Ho Chi Minh City , formerly named and still also referred to as Saigon, is the largest city in Vietnam.
Once dearly called Diamond of the Far-east with the luxury level overriding that of Hongkong or Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City is now the most populated city in Vietnam. Modern office skyscrapers, amidst Oriental style pagodas and food stalls along the street, create a dynamic urban area in very special sense. It is not oddly tidy like in Singapore, nor is urban slumps omnipresent like in India.

I truly enjoy cities that are pedestrian friendly. That is, sites, parks, entertainment districts, hotels, restaurants, that are within easy walking distance of each other. Although you might think with it's frenetic pace and appearance of crazy traffic Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam might not fit this category, but that's not the case. Once you get used to the traffic flow and crossing etiquette of Vietnam's largest city you'll appreciate, specifically the District 1 area, with it's convenience and plethora of landmarks, historical sites, museums, hotels and other amenities within reasonable walking distances. One place I always return to in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1, or what still many locals refer to as Saigon, is the Central Post Office and Notre-Dame Cathedral area. The Saigon Central Post Office in my opinion is one of the most beautiful buildings of the French colonization era of Indochina and Vietnam. Built between 1886-1891 there seems to be conflicting stories on who actually designed it. Gustav Eiffel has been named, as has Alfred Foulhoux and Auguste Henri Vildieu. Of course because the Eiffel name is so well known this is the most marketable story, he actually had an office in Saigon during this era designing many bridges, some of which are still in use today in Vietnam. Regardless of who designed it the Saigon Central Office is one site not to be missed on a visit to Ho Chi Minh City. Join me on a tour this is iconic treasure from the past, that today is still a working post office in this episode of Far Eat Adventure Travel. Recorded from a previous live broadcast on Periscope. Best Buying Tips For Sim Cards/Data In Vietnam And Southeast Asia
Thanks very much for subscribing to the channel! These tips although focused mostly on Vietnam for this video can be used if you need to stay connected in Thailand, Malaysia, or almost anywhere else. I have been living and traveling for several years in Asia and these are the most helpful tips I believe I can pass on. Especially the recommendation to only purchase a sim card from the telecom branded store or location. I have purchased sim cards from airport kiosks and convenience stores and they have always proven to be unreliable. When you purchase from kiosks especially they will usually claim the plan is unlimited data, and mostly they are not lying. But, if you are a heavy user once they notice that you are consuming alot of data they will throttle the speed back, often to an extremely frustrating slow connection. Buy as much data as you think you'll need but also be aware that for many of these plans the data, for example 5GB, may only be valid for 30 days, at which time your account will go back to zero, no matter how much is left. There was a time when data on these accounts would be in effect for 6 months or more but I believe for the most part those days are gone.
I think the iVideo Pocket Wifi device is a great solution for those that are traveling with limited time and would rather order their data device online, pick up and drop off at a convenient location like an airport, and spend the rest of their trip enjoying sites, adventures, great food, and recreation. The iVideo Pocket Wifi can be used with up to 5 devices simultaneously, so if you're traveling with a partner, your family, or a group, it's convenient, and very affordable.

Ho Chi Minh City(Saigon), Vietnam-5 Things You Should Know Before You Visit
Need to book a hotel for Saigon, (Ho Chi Minh City), or anywhere else? Using this link to book your hotel with Agoda will give you the same great price and help us out with a small commission:
These aren't all of the things you should know before you visit Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon, Vietnam but it's a start. It also allows me to start this series on Vietnam's largest city! This is an incredibly fascinating city and when you visit your are really watching the process of a rapidly expanding, modernizing city. For now there's still lots of traditional and local neighborhoods that feel like the real Vietnam. I hope have a chance to visit these places as well as seeing all of the famous sites.
For Yellow bus 109 here's the link with all of the stops: . There's also a Yellow bus 119 that will take you to the bus station where you can move on to Can Tho and the Western provinces.
I personally use Grab and the GoViet apps for motorbike taxis around the city. If you want to be picked up at the airport by one of them you'll need to walk outside of the domestic terminal area where the motorbikes have to stop.
I hope you find these tips helpful. Please let me know what else you'd like to learn about Ho Chi Minh City.I plan on doing lots of videos on food, finding vegetarian and vegan food, good coffee, local producst and more! Don't forget to subscribe to my audio podcast:
