The Feroz Shah Kotla fort is the home of Djinns, and it is here that people who believe in the supernatural come to seek solutions to their problems, sharing their deepest, darkest, most private secrets. It is also the place where exorcism is performed on those who are believed to be under the spell of evil spirits, and many swear it has helped them personally.
According to Islam, humans were created from clay, while angels were created from light. The Djinns, on the other hand, were created from smokeless fire. Iblis was a Djinn who refused to kneel down before God, and was cast out of heaven as punishment. He is known as the the devil, or shaitan.
The devout write letters stating their problem, and leave it behind for supernatural beings, with the belief that their troubles would be taken care of.

Djinns are believed to have the power to control and manipulate humans. Myth has it that they live for thousand of years and can bear a family too, just like humans.
It is also believed that Djinns have a soft corner for women with long, luscious hair. The devout also claim that Djinns get attracted to beautiful women and try to possess them.

Rich History
Feroz Shah Tughlaq, after ascending the throne from his uncle, Muhammad bin Tughlaq, built the Feroz Shah Kotla fort in 1354 AD. In the same year, he also founded the city of Ferozabad. The city and the fort were established on the banks of the Yamuna.
Feroz Shah built the fort because there was problem in water supply in his previous capital, Tughlaqabad.

People bow down their heads in utmost devotionPeople bow down their heads in utmost devotion
It Started in 1977...
Asif Khan Dehlvi, founder of Delhi Karavan, says people started flocking the Feroz Shah Kotla fort only in 1977, few months after the Emergency.” But the Djinns, he says, have been living here since at least 400 years.
During Emergency, a saint named Laddu Shah started living in Feroz Shah Kotla, and told his followers that there are certain energies in form of Djinns at the monument and they fulfill people's wishes, says Dehlvi.
However, the most famous Djinn here is the Laat Wale Baba, the chief of the Kotla Djinns. He is believed to be living in the Minar-e-Zareen, a 13.1-metre polished sandstone pillar. The pillar is surrounded by a railing and people push themselves against it believing that their wishes would be heard if they touch it.
This 14th century structure has stood the test of time. And people still hold on to their beliefs, undeterred.
As William Dalrymple writes in his book City of Djinns, “When a dust storm blows it means the djinns are going to celebrate a marriage…”

The Feroz Shah Kotla or Kotla was a fortress built by Sultan Feroz Shah Tughlaq to house his version of Delhi city called Ferozabad.
A pristine polished sandstone Topra Ashokan pillar from the 3rd century B.C. rises from the palace's crumbling remains, one of many pillars of Ashoka left by the Mauryan emperor; it was moved from Topra Kalan in Pong Ghati of Yamunanagar district in Haryana to Delhi under orders of Firoz Shah Tughlaq of Delhi Sultanate, and re-erected in its present location in 1356.

Feroz Shah Kotla is a fortress constructed by Sultan Feroz Shah as a walled city he named Ferozabad. The fort came into being when the Mughals decided to shift their capital from Tughlaqabad to Ferozabad, because of water scarcity. The fort contained beautiful gardens, baolis (step wells) palaces, mosques and madrassas.
One of the most notable features of the Feroz Shah Kotla Fort is the 13 metre tall Ashoka Pillar, which stands upon a pyramid like structure. The pillar was brought from Ambala to Delhi by Feroz Shah and is engraved with edicts of Ashoka’s principles.

Feroz Shah Kotla Fort, Delhi | Heritage Walk
FEROZ SHAH KOTLA FORT, DELHI –
fort of Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. Built by the Mughal king Feroz Shah Tughlaq in 1354, this fort is one of the oldest monuments in Delhi. A narrow lane on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg leads to this fortress which is enclosed by high walls.
Feroz Shah Kotla Fort was built when the Mughals decided to shift their capital from Tughlaqabad to Ferozabad due to the shortage of water in that region. The fort was built along the Yamuna River to solve the purpose. Beautiful gardens, palaces, mosques and madrasas were constructed inside the fort which was the royal citadel of the capital.
The entrance has a huge iron gate with a board that bears the name of Feroz Shah Kotla. The boundary walls of the fort, built as a stone masonary, are as high as 15 metres. Inside the fort you will find a number of ruined structures, of which the Mosque and the Baoli (step well) are still recognizable. One thing that will draw your attention is the Ashokan Pillar which stands tall on the top of a pyramidal three-tiered structure. The 13 metres high pillar, which was brought by Feroz Shah Tughlaq from Ambala to Delhi, bears the edicts of Ashoka’s principles.
Though the fort remains merely as a ruin, it is still regarded as one of the important edifices of historical importance. On Thursdays, a number of locals can be sighted appeasing the Djinns and the spirits that are said to reside there, by lighting candles, incense sticks and offering milk and grains. For the lovers of history, who are passionate about ancient architectures and dynasties, this place has enough archaeological importance.
How to reach: The fort is easily accessible by bus, auto, taxi or metro. The nearest metro station is that of ITO.
Entry Fee: Rs. 25

Praying to the Djinns at Feroz Shah Kotla Fort - Delhi
Devotees in large number gather every thursday at Feroz Shah Kotla Fort in Delhi to offer prayer to the Djinns and write letters, stick coins to the walls of the mosque, offer milk, sweets, fruits and even meats to the Djinns, all with the single objective of appeasing the 'unhappy spirits' and getting a long-cherished wish fulfilled. There is a great believe that by doing so wishes are fulfilled by the Djinns......
Jinn or djinn are supernatural creatures in Islamic mythology as well as pre-Islamic Arabian mythology. They are mentioned frequently in the Quran (the 72nd sura is titled Sūrat al-Jinn) and other Islamic texts and inhabit an unseen world in dimensions beyond the visible universe of humans. The Quran says that the jinn are made of a smokeless and scorching fire, but are also physical in nature, being able to interfere physically with people and objects and likewise be acted upon. The jinn, humans and angels make up the three sapient creations of God. Like human beings, the jinn can be good, evil, or neutrally benevolent and hence have free will like humans and unlike angels. The shaytan jinn are the analogue of demons in Christian tradition, but the jinn are not angels and the Quran draws a clear distinction between the two creations. The Quran states in surat Al-Kahf (The Cave), Ayah 50, that Iblis (Satan) is one of the jinn.
