BEST WALK in SAN FRANCISCO
BEST WALK in SAN FRANCISCO. Lyon Street steps and Billionaires Row is one of the most engaging and easy walks in San Francisco. The walk starts at the top of the Fillmore Street hill. The top of the hill is located on Fillmore Street at Broadway, in the Pacific Heights district of San Francisco.
If you are vacationing in SF, you can use public transport, an SF MUNI bus, to get to the start point. The #3 JACKSON bus travels from Union Square to the Calvary church on Fillmore and Jackson. Walk 2 blocks to the top of the hill. ,Then you will back track to the church., The #22 FILLMORE bus will take you to the top of the hill, the start point.
The #22 will also ride you back up the hill from Chestnut Street when you arrive the end of the walk.
Jackson Street is chosen for it's easy gradient and superior views across SF Bay at each street junction. Jackson Street runs adjacent to Alta Plaza Park. At Jackson Street and Scott ,one block after Pierce, be sure to enjoy the view south - the opposite direction from SF Bay.
The short stretch of Broadway between Divisadero Street and the Lyon Street steps is unofficially called Billionaires Row. You'll understand why when you see the houses along the street.
The Lyon Street steps is a very popular location for exercising. The view from the top of the steps northwards across San Francisco Bay is spectacular. The neighborhood is peaceful and adjacent to the Presidio, a vast park area with many tall Redwood Sequoia trees. There is access to the Presidio at the top ,and bottom, of the Lyon Street steps. The Presidio is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area - entrance is free.
Chestnut Street is a popular shop and restaurant street. It has gone up scale over the past decade. It has an Apple Store and multiple GAP shops. From Chestnut Street, to get to Chinatown or Little Italy or Union Square, take the #30 STOCKTON bus which runs along the street. If you wish to get back to the start location, continue along Chestnut Street to Fillmore Street and take the #22 FILLMORE bus to return to the summit.

California Walking Tours - filbert steps, Coit Tower - San Francisco
This is the Walking Tour video around the famous tourist spotCoit Tower and filbert steps in San Francisco.
About Coit Tower:
Coit Tower is a 210-foot (64 m) tower in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, California, offering panoramic views over the city and the bay. The tower, in the city's Pioneer Park, was built between 1932 and 1933 using Lillie Hitchcock Coit's bequest to beautify the city of San Francisco. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 29, 2008.
The art deco tower, built of unpainted reinforced concrete, was designed by architects Arthur Brown, Jr. and Henry Howard. The interior features fresco murals in the American Social Realism style, painted by 25 different on-site artists and their numerous assistants, plus two additional paintings installed after creation off-site.
Also known as the Coit Memorial Tower, it was dedicated to the volunteer firemen who had died in San Francisco's five major fires. Although an apocryphal story claims that the tower was designed to resemble a fire hose nozzle due to Coit's affinity with the San Francisco firefighters of the day, the resemblance is coincidental.
About Filbert Steps:
Filbert Street in San Francisco, California starts at Lyon Street on the east edge of The Presidio and runs east, crossing Van Ness Avenue and Columbus Avenue. It ends on Telegraph Hill at Kearny Street below Coit Tower and eventually resumes as a pedestrian stairway known as the Filbert Street Steps.
The Filbert Street Steps descend the east slope of Telegraph Hill along the line where Filbert Street would be if the hill weren't so steep. The steps run through the Grace Marchant Garden, which resident Grace Marchant started in 1949 and is now tended to and paid for by the residents of the street. From there, the steps run down to an eastern stub of Filbert Street and the walkway through the plaza to The Embarcadero. Many houses in this residential neighborhood are accessible only from the steps. As on paved streets, several fire hydrants and a solitary parking meter are located along the steps.
