Filicudi - The Island of Simplicity - Aeolian Islands
#andy1803 #aeolianislands #filicudi
North-west side of Aeolian Archipelago, the ancient volcanic island of Filicudi is almost midway between the smallest and remote Alicudi and Salina. As I always repeat, each of the seven islands is unique and Filicudi doesn’t make any exception. The only way to catch these differences is to visit them all and discover their particularities.
Since your first steps on Filicudi rocky ground, you will feel as if you’ve travelled back in the past. Modern chaotic life is over and time stops to run immediately. Probably you’ll need few more hours to understand what is going on.
Filicudi is wild, quiet and lonely. Just few human micro-settlements, one road to connect them, wonderful seascapes almost everywhere and a peaceful atmosphere not so easy to find elsewhere in the Mediterranean sea. In one word, this is the island of simplicity, perfect to relax, to breath pure air and forget the real world at least for your journey.
Walk along the seaside of Pecorini a mare, the smallest village right on the beach facing Alicudi; watch the beautiful houses around the church of Pecorini with hundreds of coloured flowers and fruit trees and butterflies or lazy cats sleeping under the shadows; drive a scooter till Valdichiesa the highest inhabited zone to admire the entire archipelago in just one view; climb on capo Graziano trying to imagine pre-historical way of living; experience snorkelling around Le Punte and finish your day with a delicious “granita” on the promenade of Filicudi porto. I am sure that in the end you and Filicudi will be best friends.
And don’t forget to take a boat on a round tour of the island, an experience you’ll never forget.
Two or three days are enough to understand the meaning of the phrase “Mollo tutto e vivo a Filicudi” written on a wood panel near the door of Nino’s bar. Yet, It may seem a crazy idea to leave old life and start a new one in Filicudi but, believe me, when you’ll be there the same idea won’t seem so crazy as long!
Let me end with a special tanks to Monica Blasi of Filicudi Wildlife Conservation. This non profit organization does a great job with wildlife conservation, particularly in saving turtles when accidentally captured by fishermen or in conducting studies to monitor health status of Aeolian sea. If you want to learn more about the geological history of Filicudi and its wonderful undersea biology, then ask her to bring you by boat around the island.
This short film has been filmed in June (2018), to me the best period to catch the maximum from Aeolian Islands. Footage are from Olympus OM-D EM5 MKII, Canon Legria and Eken H8R coupled with Zhiyun Evolution Gimbal. Drone footage are from Mavick Air.
Music track “Wasted Briatin” is by Scott Holmes and is licensed under a non-commercial license by Free Music Archive (FMA).

Gisbert Lippelt Low Cost Life
Since a couple ...of years I'm engaged in a photographic research of contemporary hermits.Gisbert Lippelt is the first hermit I've met about three years ago. From this first encounter was born a reportage that has become an exhibition and a slideshow: Gisbert Lippelt Low Cost Life
This work has been shown and exhibited at several festivals such as 2010 European Photography, Reggio Emilia, Rome Photography Festival 2009 or International Meeting of Photography in Plovdiv 2010 (Poland), and prized with an honorable mention at the International Photography Award (IPA) 2009,
Who is Gisbert Lippelt?
Gisbert is a German former ship's officer who fell in love with Eolian Islands, located near Sicily, some 40 years ago. He took an immediate decision-quit his job (second mate of a luxurious cruise ship), gave away all his property to local peasants as a gesture of liberation, and began a trip backwards into history, you might say back to the future. He chose as his professors the oldest peasants on the island and has determinedly studied their folk craft and ways of life. For a dwelling he has built a marvelous cave in the most beautiful part of the island, he lives by collecting rain water (there is no groundwater) and wood and herbs. Candle light and live fire keep him company, beautiful view with numerous volcanoes substitute him theatre and art galleries. He eats only what grows wild around him. Thus he has resolved the question of money and bills: the first isn't needed because the second never arrive. Free adaption from a text of Lada Alekseychuk
