Fire Island National Seashore (FINS) is a United States National Seashore that protects a 26-mile (42 km) section of Fire Island, an approximately 30-mile (48 km) long barrier island separated from Long Island by the Great South Bay. The island is part of New York State's Suffolk County.
There are 17 private communities within the boundaries of Fire Island National Seashore including Saltaire, Fire Island Pines, and Ocean Beach. Only two bridges lead to Fire Island and the national seashore and there are no public roads within the seashore itself. The Robert Moses Causeway leads to Robert Moses State Park on the western end of Fire Island while the William Floyd Parkway leads to the eastern end of the island. The seashore can also be accessed by private boat or by ferry from the communities of Patchogue, Sayville, and Bay Shore on Long Island.
Fire Island National Seashore was established as a unit of the National Park Service on September 11, 1964.A separate unit of Fire Island National Seashore located on Long Island protects the home and estate of William Floyd, an American Revolutionary War general and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The William Floyd House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located in Mastic Beach, New York.

Great View of The Great South Bay ! Fire Island Lighthouse
The Fire Island Lighthouse is a visible landmark on the Great South Bay, in southern Suffolk County, New York on the western end of Fire Island, a barrier island off the southern coast of Long Island. The lighthouse is located within Fire Island National Seashore and just to the east of Robert Moses State Park. It is part of the Fire Island Light Station which contains the light, keepers’ quarters, the lens building containing the original first-order Fresnel lens, and a boat house.
The current lighthouse is a 180-foot (55 m) stone tower that began operation in 1858 to replace the 74-foot (23 m) tower originally built in 1826. The United States Coast Guard decommissioned the light in 1974. In 1982 the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society (FILPS) was formed to preserve the lighthouse. FILPS raised over $1.2 million to restore the tower and light. On May 25, 1986 the United States Coast Guard returned the Fire Island Lighthouse to an active aid to navigation. On February 22, 2006, the light became a private aid to navigation. It continues to be on the nautical charts, but is operated and maintained by the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society and not the USCG. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 and a boundary increase for the national historic district occurred in 2010.
It is listed as Fire Island Light, number 695, in the USCG light lists.
When the lighthouse was built it was on the edge of Fire Island Inlet and marked the western end of Fire Island. However, Fire Island has extended itself through accumulating sand so that the lighthouse is now nearly five miles (8.0 km) from the western end of the island at Democrat Point.
The Archives Center at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History has a collection (#1055) of souvenir postcards of lighthouses and has digitized 272 of these and made them available online. These include postcards of Fire Island Light with links to customized nautical charts provided by National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.

Lyndhurst Mansion and Other Castles of New York
When you think castle you probably think medieval times or maybe you think Belvedere Castle in Central Park. But a lot of majestic castles are scattered throughout New York State.
North of New York City is Bannerman Castle. Its namesake was Irishman Francis Bannerman, who owned an ammunitions company in Brooklyn. He bought the island in 1901 and had the castle built to store military surplus. The state purchased the island in 1967. After a fire destroyed most of the castle in 1969, it became off-limits to the public. (The island eventually became part of Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve.)
In the Great Lakes region, you'll find Boldt Castle. George Boldt, a former manager of the Waldorf-Astoria, commissioned this castle in 1900. It was once one of the largest private homes in the United States. Today, it is a tourist attraction.
Hundreds of years ago, a castle was a structure that had to be fortified from attack. But after arriving at Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, I learned that times have changed.
Lyndhurst was built in 1838. It was designed by architect Alexander Jackson Davis, the same man who designed Federal Hall on Wall Street.
The grand entryway is just a hint of what is inside. One of the first rooms you enter is a parlor where guests gathered before dinner. This was a room designed for conversation.
On our way to the paintings gallery, we passed a bathroom and the duchess's room complete with vintage Louis Vuitton trunk. The gallery made it clear that owner Jay Gould loved collecting fine art.
Almost 200 years after the gothic revival home was built, Lyndhurst remains a crown jewel on the shore of the Hudson River.

Long Island
Long Island is an island in the U.S. state of New York. Stretching northeast from New York Harbor into the Atlantic Ocean, the island comprises four counties, including two (Kings and Queens) that form the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, and two (Nassau and Suffolk) that are farther out on the island and mainly suburban. Although all four counties are part of the greater New York metropolitan area, the name Long Island is often reserved in popular usage for only Nassau and Suffolk counties, as distinct from those lying within New York City proper. North of the island is Long Island Sound, across which are the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island.
With a Census-estimated population of 7,740,208 in 2013, Long Island is the most populated island in any U.S. state or territory, and the 17th-most populous island in the world (ahead of Ireland, Jamaica, and Hokkaidō). Its population density is 5,402 inhabitants per square mile (2,086 /km2). If it were a U.S. state, Long Island would rank 13th in population (after Virginia) and first in population density.

Hey guys,
This is Episode 16 of 34 of our road trip across the USA. We traveled to 26 US States and 3 Canadian States over 6 1/2 months. This is where our vlogging journey really began.... We filmed alot, drove alot and Ian edited alot.
This is the visual tale of leaving Fire Island, New York. After a sad goodbye to some great friends, we took the long walk down the boardwalk to the ferry.
We crossed the straight to Long Island, New York and drove to Manhattan.
With dollar pizza in hand, we headed off through the Lincoln tunnel and across the state towards... a destination which will become more clear as time goes by.

We spent one of our last summer Saturdays at Fire Island... an hour after relaxing in the sun and sand we realized there were some people that were free and clothing was optional. Aside from that small detail, the houses and beaches were beautiful! Plus, there are wild deer that roam the wooden walkways - straight chillin'!

At least 2 dead from Sandy on Long Island | Hurricane Sandy
As Hurricane Sandy churned inland as a downgraded storm, residents up and down the battered mid-Atlantic region woke on Tuesday to lingering waters, darkened homes and the daunting task of cleaning up from once-in-a-generation storm surges and their devastating effects.
Power remained out for roughly six million people, including a large swath of Manhattan. Early risers stepped out into debris-littered streets that remained mostly deserted as residents awaited dawn to shed light on the extent of the damage. Bridges remained closed and seven subway tunnels under the East River remained flooded.
The storm was the most destructive in the 108-year history of New York City's subway system, said Joseph J. Lhota, the chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, in an early morning statement. We are assessing the extent of the damage and beginning the process of recovery, he said, but did not provide a timetable for restoring transit service to a paralyzed city.
At least seven deaths in the New York region were tied to the storm, which toppled trees and sparked fires in several areas. In Breezy Point on the Rockaways, nearly 200 firefighters were still battling a blaze on Tuesday morning that destroyed at least 50 tightly-packed homes in the beach community. A Fire Department spokesman said the area was probably the most flooded part of the city, so there are all sorts of complications.
The surging water also caused extensive complications at NYU Langone Medical Center when a backup power system failed Monday evening, forcing the evacuation of patients to other facilities. Backup power also failed at Coney Island Hospital in southern Brooklyn, though critical patients had been evacuated in advance of the storm.
Nine hours after making landfall at 8 p.m. on Monday, the storm -- already downgraded from Hurricane Sandy to a post-tropical cyclone -- weakened as it passed west across southern Pennsylvania, though it still packed maximum sustained winds of 65 m.p.h., the National Hurricane Center said. It was expected to turn north and head for Canada late on Tuesday.
The storm had unexpectedly picked up speed as it roared over the Atlantic Ocean on Monday, grinding life to a halt for millions of people in more than a half-dozen states, with extensive evacuations that turned shorefront neighborhoods into ghost towns.
The wind-driven rain lashed sea walls and protective barriers in places like Atlantic City, where the Boardwalk was damaged as water forced its way inland. Foam was spitting, and the sand gave in to the waves along the beach at Sandy Hook, N.J., at the entrance to New York Harbor. Water was thigh-high on the streets in Sea Bright, N.J., a three-mile sand-sliver of a town where the ocean joined the Shrewsbury River.
It's the worst I've seen, said David Arnold, watching the storm from his longtime home in Long Branch, N.J. The ocean is in the road, there are trees down everywhere. I've never seen it this bad.
In New York, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's office said late Monday night that at least five deaths, at least three involving falling trees, were attributable to the storm in the state. About 7 p.m., a tree fell on a house in Queens, killing a 30-year-old man, the city police said. About the same time, two boys, ages 11 and 13, were killed in North Salem in Westchester County, when a tree fell on the house they were in, according to the State Police.
In Morris County, N.J., a man and a woman were killed when a tree fell on their car Monday evening, The Associated Press reported.
Earlier, a construction crane atop one of the tallest buildings in the city came loose and dangled 80 stories over West 57th Street, across the street from Carnegie Hall.rooklyn-Battery Tunnel flooded from end to end,
Hurricane-force winds extended up to 175 miles from the center of the storm; tropical-storm-force winds spread out 485 miles from the center. Forecasters said tropical-storm-force winds could stretch all the way north to Canada and all the way west to the Great Lakes. Heavy snow was expected in some states
Subways were shut down from Boston to Washington, as were Amtrak and the commuter rail lines. About 1,000 flights were canceled at each of the three major airports in the New York City area. Philadelphia International Airport had 1,200 canceled flights, according to FlightAware, a data provider in Houston. And late Monday night, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said cabs had been instructed to get off New York City roads.
A replica of the H.M.S. Bounty, a tall ship built for the 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty starring Marlon Brando and used in the recent Pirates of the Caribbean series, sank off the North Carolina coast. The Coast Guard said the 180-foot three-masted ship went down near the Outer Banks after being battered by 18-foot-high seas and thrashed by 40-m.p.h. winds. The body of one crew member, Claudene Christian, 42, was recovered. Another crew member remained missing.
