July 4th. in New York City: 2013, Pier Party at Circle Lines.
Partying on the pier this July 4th. in New York City. It was an awesome time. I ate earlier at the small al fresco restaurant there. It was 94 degrees. Everything was awesome! I had the two crab cakes with fries and a salad and two double Long Island teas to wash it all down. There were hundreds of people on the pier but, it never felt crowded. Everyone was laid back and we all had a fantastic evening alongside the Hudson River. At the end of the evening, it was still 89 degress and HUMID. When I returned to my car at the hotel about a 1/2 up 42nd. street, the first thing I did was freeze myself with the air conditioner! LOL

Maryland
Did you know... that the only actual wild ponies in the U.S. live in Maryland? ...or that the Maryland Blue Crab is the official State Crustacean? ...and that a Marylander wrote the U.S. national anthem? Get on a guided tour with Ambassador Eacho on Maryland's history and beauty. #50states #MD
Transcript:
Hello, I'm Ambassador Eacho from the U.S. Embassy in Vienna, Austria. I want to tell you about my home state, Maryland.
Maryland is a small state on the eastern seaboard. But don't let its size fool you. The landscape of Maryland is very diverse -- from the low lying eastern shore and Chesapeake Bay area to the metropolitan city, Baltimore, to the forested Appalachian foothills and the mountains in the western part of the state.
Maryland is one of the original 13 colonies. It was established in 1632 when Cecilius Calvert, the baron of Baltimore, received a charter for the land. Calvert named the colony Maryland, in honor of Henrietta Maria, the wife of England's King Charles the first.
In 1788, Maryland became the 7th state.
Maryland earned the nickname, Old Line State, in 1776 when one General stood firm against British troops in the Battle of Long Island, during the Revolutionary War.
Today, Maryland is better known for its beautiful beaches and boardwalk in Ocean City. Have you tried Boardwalk fries doused in vinegar? That's a staple of this seaside town.
Maryland is also known for its crabs steamed in Old Bay Seasoning. In 1989, the Maryland Blue Crab was designated as the official State Crustacean.
During lunch hour on the Chesapeake, vendors sell more crab cakes than hot dogs and hamburgers. And picking crabs is as much fun as eating them.
Further down the coast is the barrier island, Assateague, famous for the free-roaming ponies, the only actual wild ponies in the United States.
The state has 31 miles of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. However, much of Maryland's 12,400 square miles consists of inland water, including some 400 manmade lakes. The Chesapeake Bay that splits the state is the largest estuary in the United States. It's no wonder that sailing is a favorite pastime in my state. In fact, the capital city, Annapolis, is known as the sailing capital of the world.
In 1980 Baltimore opened Harborplace, a shopping, dining and entertainment complex, and another hot spot for tourists. The National Aquarium, one of the largest and most technologically advanced, is located in Baltimore's Inner harbor.
Every year, the world hears the state song, Maryland, My Maryland. It's sung at the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the famous Triple Crown thoroughbred race, held at the Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore.
A more famous song was written by Marylander Francis Scott Key, while he watched the British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. The Star Spangled Banner was officially adopted as America's national anthem in 1931.
Maryland is home to many famous people.
Baseball slugger Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore, not far from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. You can visit the Sultan of Swing's birthplace museum. Swimmer Michael Phelps, of Towson, was the first American to win 8 medals in a single Olympic games.
The Clara Barton National Historic site in Glenn Echo commemorates the life of the founder of the American Red Cross.
Other famous Marylanders include jazz-blues singer Billie Holiday and rock singer Frank Zappa, as well as author Upton Sinclair and abolitionist Harriet Tubman.
Marylanders are as diverse as the state they live in.
My favorite thing about my home state is...crabs...hard shell crabs, soft shells, crab cakes, you name it. The Maryland blue crab is the best tasting crab in the world, and you can never get enough!
Long Island Has NY's Freshest Oysters || Food/Groups
New York has almost 130 miles of coastline, and pretty much all of it is found on Long Island, a hulking spine of glacial moraines that stretches from Brooklyn & Queens all the way east to Montauk. And from one end of this enigmatic isle to the other, a single type of shell-encased coastal inhabitant has fueled a century of industry, innovation, and culinary tradition here: Long Island oysters.
In this episode of Food/Groups, we road-tripped out east from our Manhattan headquarters to rendezvous with born-and-raised Long Islanders who have deep connections to the slippery shellfish. From diving for wild oysters by hand on the North Shore and sustainably raising them on ocean-cleaning reef farms in the Great South Bay, to sucking the damn things down with some local beers, generations of Long Islanders have made mollusks a delicious way of life.

Sandy on its way to Long Island-- 10:30 am at Huntington, Long Island
I took a ride out this morning to get some milk, eggs and bread at the nearest supermarket. Things were calm, plenty on the shelves. Then I took a ride to the harbor to see what was going on. Here is what it looked like at 10:30 am. High tide was about 1 1/2 hours away. Already the water is about 10 feet above normal. Halesite area store owners are taking it seriously, many boarding up their windows. This area normally floods on just a heavy rain- see my other videos of flooding on NY Avenue. We are very concerned about what will happen.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cleans Up Fire Island after Hurricane Sandy
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Helps Clean up Fire Island Sandy Debris -- Courtesy Video | U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District | Date: 03.12.2013 -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working to clear storm debris from New York's Fire Island as part of the federal government's Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts. Debris removal began March 2, 2013, and is scheduled to be complete by March 31, 2013. Removal operations throughout the remote barrier island - complicated by narrow spaces, restricted beach access and winter weather - have been carefully coordinated with local, state and other federal agencies to minimize disturbance to residents and the island's sensitive ecosystem. BIG TOG, STRIPERS ON THE MOVE and BLUEFIN TO BOOT - November 7, 2019 New England Fishing Report
Be sure to follow the weekly fishing reports across New England at
First and foremost, I’d like to direct you to the news story I posted last week breaking down what took place at ASMFC meeting, specifically in regards to striped bass, at I am still seeing incorrect information being spread online in regards to 2020 regulations and circle hooks. In short, the ASMFC set a 1-fish bag limit with a slot 28 - 35 inches for the ocean fishery – those waters outside the Chesapeake Bay. However, states have until November 30 to submit alternate regulations so long as they meet the 18% reduction, which will then be addressed at the February AASMFC meeting before anything further is made official. Regarding circle hooks, the mandatory use when targeting striped bass with bait was passed with implementation to be done in 2021.
Lots of tog this week once again, but I’ll start off with some striper info. Overall things have been kind of slow with some ok catches being made here and there in the surf. The Canal has fish into the 30-inch class, and South County has fish to about 30 inches. This is the time of the year when you might strike out or find small schoolies for half a dozen outings, then happen into the best bite of your season as a pod of big bass makes a pit stop at your beach before heading south. I started poking around the smaller tidal rivers over the weekend with my son, and we found some sure signs of the end of the season being close at hand as there were good numbers of small bass, some big hickory shad and even a few large white perch landed by a fellow angler.
The tuna bite up around the Cape is still going strong for recreational-class bluefin. Capt. John of Fish Chatham Charters had fish of 68 and 71 inches this week, and he has a few spots still open for tuna and/or cod trips in the coming weeks, so call him today at 508-237-7210.
Ok, moving into the blackfish reports, I’ll start off in Connecticut as I received an email from Jeffrey Downes with a good-sized, Long Island Sound blackfish that he caught this week. I fished off Clinton on Sunday morning and we found lots of boats and plenty of shorts with just enough keepers to make it an ok day. There seems to be a lot of 12- to 15-inch fish out there right now as the common and well-known spots are getting hammered.
Up in Rhode Island the bite seems to be a bit better than inside the Sound, and Alan Sharaf fished with the crew of Sound Bound off Newport on Monday with some good results. They had a full-boat limit by 1130 am and released all fish over 8 pounds including a 10.5.
TJ Kopecky sent me his report via email this week and confirms the good tog bite he has been having in the Warren and Barrington Rivers continues. The incoming tide on both Saturday and Sunday produced steady action on Asylum jigs with green crabs. Bassing is slowing down a bit in the rivers but he did hear of some action along Newport on Brenton Reef.
Cindy Rive sent me an email of an 18-inch tog landed by Garret Krzynowek while fishing off Cape Cod. She didn’t give me any other details on the catch but I have been receiving solid reports all throughout Buzzards Bay and out around Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
Then, also on Monday, I got word from Snug Harbor that the Island Current produced some mega tog on their trip with several 11s, a 12- and a 13-pounder being caught! The Frances had several double-digits over the weekend as well, so now might be a good time to get on one of the local party boats for tog!
And speaking of party boats, the Black Hawk is running some combo trips where they split the time between sea bass and blackfish at different parts of the trip with a good shot of other mixed species being landed including cod, porgies and even the occasional winter flounder like the one landed by 12-year-old Brandon M. from Vernon, over the weekend.
Homeland security training on the water
Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection Environmental Conservation Police and the Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit took part in training exercises in tactical boarding operations and homeland security missions on Long Island Sound, off the coast of Old Saybrook Thursday. The training was conducted by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and included the Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit.

NYS Rowing Championships | Port Rowing | Men's Novice 8 | 2016
This is the footage from the time trial. We got second place in the time trial. During the grand final later that day we got first place however due to poor officiation and high winds the medals were given out based on the time trial, leaving my boat with a silver medal. Regardless, we rowed very well and hard together, some of our best racing all season. I couldn't be more proud of us and I couldn't ask for a better crew.
