What is the United Church of Christ?
The United Church of Christ came into being in 1957 with the union of two Protestant denominations: the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches. Each of these was, in turn, the result of a union of two earlier traditions.
The Congregational Churches were organized when the Pilgrims of Plymouth Plantation and the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony acknowledged their essential unity in the Cambridge Platform of 1648.
The Reformed Church in the United States traced its beginnings to congregations of German settlers in Pennsylvania founded from 1725 on. Later, its ranks were swelled by Reformed immigrants from Switzerland, Hungary and other countries.
The Christian Churches sprang up in the late 1700s and early 1800s in reaction to the theological and organizational rigidity of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Baptist churches of the time.
The Evangelical Synod of North America traced its beginnings to an association of German Evangelical pastors in Missouri. This association, founded in 1841, reflected the 1817 union of Lutheran and Reformed churches in Germany.
Through the years, other groups such as American Indians, Afro-Christians, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, Volga Germans, Armenians, and Hispanic Americans have joined with the four earlier groups. In recent years, Christians from other traditions, including the Roman Catholic Church, have found a home in the UCC, and so have gay and lesbian Christians who have not been welcome in other churches. Thus the United Church of Christ celebrates and continues a broad variety of traditions in its common life.

Places to see in ( Kissimmee - USA )
Kissimmee is a city in central Florida's Osceola County, just south of Orlando. It’s defined by its proximity to the region’s multitude of amusement parks, including the massive Walt Disney World Resort complex. The city lies along the northwest shore of Lake Tohopekaliga (nicknamed Lake Toho), and its verdant Kissimmee Waterfront Park encompasses walking paths, playgrounds and a fishing pier.
Although Kissimmee is regarded as a city according to the US way of defining one, it is not a city as you might imagine it. Sure, there's an attractive core – Historic Downtown Kissimmee – with roots in citrus and cattle. It has a quaint main street and some good bars, the odd cafe and antique store, but they're the only redeeming feature. The rest of Kissimmee straddles several highways, an urban sprawl that morphs into Greater Orlando. That said, it's handily within driving distance of the theme parks and many chain hotels line the rather incomprehensible network of multilane highways.
The downtown area lies near the intersection of U.S. Highway 17/92 and U.S. Highway 192. The downtown of Kissimmee does not possess any big skyscrapers; most of the buildings are two or three stories high. The biggest and the tallest building in the downtown is the Osceola County courthouse. The main thoroughfare follows along Highway 17/Highway 92 through the city's center and is a combination of three streets: Main Street, Broadway Street, and Emmett Street. The downtown area consists largely of restaurants, small shops, and historic residences. The University of Central Florida has a business incubator located in the area that is an important part of the economic engine downtown.
Osceola Heritage Park is an event facility featuring a concert arena (Silver Spurs Arena) and professional sports stadium (Osceola County Stadium). The Silver Spurs Arena has been host to many acts, ranging from Hilary Duff and Bob Dylan to an annual rodeo event. Jehovah's Witnesses also use The Silver Spurs Arena for their annual District Conventions. In 2008, a number of English and Spanish conventions were held by the Witnesses, bringing thousands of delegates to the Kissimmee area for the three-day events.

Driving through McBee, South Carolina
McBee /ˈmækbi/ is a town in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States.
n 1900, McBee's first railroad depot was built. About one year later on October 8, 1901, McBee was incorporated. On June 30, 1901, McBee Presbyterian Church was built, the first church in McBee. Six years later in 1907 McBee's second church, McBee Methodist Church, was built.
After the Seaboard's Columbia-to-Cheraw line was completed in 1900, McBee grew so quickly that a new depot became a high priority by the end of the decade. In 1914, the Seaboard Air Line Railroad built a second depot in McBee. This was both a passenger and freight depot until it closed in 1971. Now it is the McBee Depot Library and Railroad Museum. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 as the Seaboard Air Line Railway Depot in McBee.

Homeless shelter welcomes pets
Original file date: Sun, 30 Mar 2014, ID:1rwo58
OGDEN — No one who knows Michelle Perry wonders if she finds joy in animal companionship. One only has to see that even though he lacks opposable thumbs, her dog Goose has his own blog. And on that blog, Goose has a mission — to serve his less-fortunate four-legged friends who need a home. So far, the 14-year-old weimaraner has raised more than $70,000 for a state-of-the art animal hotel that’s set to open with the new Lantern House Homeless Shelter to start operations next year. Goose’s blog, which also chronicles his daily life, is found at gospelofgoose.blogspot.com. “It would be devastating if that was one more thing they had to give up,” said Perry, who is kitchen manager at St. Anne’s Center and is a reverend at First United Methodist Church in Marriott-Slaterville. Perry said people’s pets are an important part of their healing process. “They give them confidence and security,” she said. The new digs for which Goose’s efforts will pay, will include separate and secure indoor and outdoor areas for pets who have the chance to lounge there while their owners get on their feet. While there are many reasons for people to become homeless, Perry said she’s noticed that domestic violence often is one reason she hears homeless clients talk about in their road to needing help. And her efforts to provide for their pets is just one in a growing trend for those who serve victims of domestic violence to also provide for their animals. “Abusers can hurt or even kill an animal,” said Penny Evans, director of the New Hope Crisis Center in Brigham City. She said concern for an animal can keep a victim of domestic violence from leaving. Evans said for at least the 14 years that she’s been there, the center has had an agreement with the animal shelter for victims’ animals. But a few years ago, an Eagle Scout project brought a dog run that may accommodate several animals comfortably. She said this project brought the animals closer to those who sought shelter there. In 2010, Petco gave the center a grant to help with food, kennels and other items needed for animals there. Julee Smith, executive director of Your Community Connection in Ogden, said the YCC has for many years had an agreement with the animal shelter to house the pets of women and families staying at its domestic violence shelter. But she said the trend is to allow pets to go into the shelter for those victims whose pets fill a particular need to give them security at that time. “All we need is a letter from a doctor,” Smith said. “We have found that pets serve a very good purpose. It is important that these people have a good quality of life.” Smith said the shelter always has taken special service dogs. But she said the definition of a service animal has loosened over time. “It has just been within the last 10 years that they have let the other animals in,” she said. There have even been goldfish allowed under this circumstance, Smith said. “We have had a number of different cats and things like that that people have had,” she said. “We want them to have a place where they can sleep and they have to keep them on a leash. We require that.” News reports indicate that a growing number of shelters across the country are addressing the need victims feel for bringing their pets along when they leave dangerous circumstances. Ranging from urban apartments to Western ranches, the numbers of pet-friendly shelters have shot up from four in 2008 to at least 73 now, with 15 more planned, said Allie Phillips, a former Michigan prosecutor who has become a leading advocate for such shelters. Behind the nondescript walls of a New York City building that quietly harbors about 120 adults and children, “pet-friendly apartment” signs mark units outfitted with special features, such as a dog run built in a side alley, inte...
